Hannah Gann, celebrated Hamas terrorism

Hannah Gann is a Philadelphia high school teacher who spoke at a pro-Hamas protest, where she glorified children engaging in violence and spread hatred of Israel and the police.

Gann has celebrated Hamas terrorism, glorified violence and spread [slide 8] hatred of Israel, America [slide 1] and [slide 5] the police online. She has also engaged in anti-Israel activism as a teacher.

As of December 2023, Gann’s Instagram said she was a “10th Grade Advisor and History Teacher” at The Workshop School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The school is part of the School District of Philadelphia (SDP).

As of August 2024, Gann had been active with the Racial Justice Organizing Committee (RJOC) since at least 2022. RJOC is a group of activists and teachers that, among other goals, push for an anti-Israel agenda in SDP public schools. Gann is a member [p. 4] of the Philadelphia Educators for Palestine (PEFP), which she said is “sponsored” by the RJOC.

The RJOC and PEFP were were at the center of an anti-Semitism scandal in SDP schools in 2023 and 2024, which included the SDP offering an anti-Israel professional training course to teachers. The full controversy is detailed further below in the profile.

Gann is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. As of December 2023, Gann was affiliated [slide 4] with the anti-Israel organization Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).

In June 2023, Gann posted on Instagram that she was one of the educators of the Summer Teacher Institute at Eastern State Penitentiary, where she taught other SDP teachers how to develop and teach their “own curriculum about the history, current realities, and — most importantly — resistance to mass incarceration.”

Gann’s activism and social media posts in this profile took place following a series of Hamas terror attacks and war crimes against Israeli civilians, including mass murder, torture, rape, beheadings and kidnappings, which were executed on October 7, 2023. The Hamas terror attacks left approximately 1,200 Israelis dead, hundreds kidnapped and thousands wounded. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.”

December 3, 2023 - Speaking at a Pro-Hamas Rally

Gann spoke at a December 3, 2023 protest where she referred [00:01:18] to police officers as “pigs,” accused [00:02:03] Israel of “genocidal terror” and glorified [00:02:44] violence.

The protest was organized by the Philly Palestine Coalition (PPC) and was titled: “Flood Philly for Gaza.” It was held at Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia. The name that Hamas gave for its terror attacks on October 7, 2023, was “Al Aqsa Flood,” a reference to the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and the assertion that Jews “threaten” to destroy the mosque, a pretext for attacks on Jews long before Israel’s founding in 1948.

Several businesses along the route of the march were reportedly graffitied with messages such as “F**k the [Israel Defense Forces]," "Intifada" and "Free Palestine."

The term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” carries the connotation of violence. Palestinian intifadas waged against Israel have been marked since 1987 by hundreds of hijackings, shootings, stabbings, bombings and suicide missions.

At the protest, Gann referred [00:02:42] to youth as possessing “courageous defiance” and then said [00:02:44]: “When a Palestinian child picks up a rock or a slingshot in the face of Israeli tanks or machine guns, we owe them that same energy! We owe them to take it to these streets and f**k the police until Palestine is free!”

Although romanticized as a form of “popular resistance,” rock throwing remains a deadly form of violence


At the rally, activists chanted [00:00:01]: “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free!” and [00:00:02] “Intifada revolution!…Intifada, intifada! Long live the intifada!”

“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free,” is a chant used [00:02:52] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel.

During the protest, anti-Israel activist Gabriel Bryant, a featured speaker, said [00:02:47] regarding Israelis: “We are dealing with a people who have no shame!...for the past 60 days, I’m thinking about all the lies that they told! Somebody told a lie! They said that there were beheaded babies! But somebody called the lie!”

Regarding Israel’s war against Hamas, Bryant said [00:04:55]: “I believe right now…the past two months and the past decade of struggle, we are in the last stages of Zionism, you all!”

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.


As the crowd cheered, Bryant concluded [00:05:12]: “We are in the last stages of Zionism! It will be crushed! It will be crushed! It will be crushed on our watch!”

Protest participants also stood outside a Jewish-owned restaurant called “Goldie” and chanted [00:00:02]: “Goldie, Goldie, you can’t hide! We charge you with genocide!” 

Support for Hamas Terrorism 

Gann expressed support for Hamas terrorists in multiple 2024 Instagram posts, according to a tip submitted to Canary Mission in July 2024.

One of Gann’s 2024 Instagram posts featured a graphic of a pro-Hamas inverted red triangle with a rifle and a bazooka next to it. The graphic’s text said: “‘You will kill ten of us, / we will kill one of you, / but in the end, / you will tire of it first.’ / Ho Chi Minh.”

The inverted red triangle is a symbol showing support for Hamas and Palestinian terrorism. It first appeared in propaganda videos produced by the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, during its terror attacks of October 7, 2023. The symbol was used by Hamas to signify one of their Israeli targets.

Ho Chi Minh carried out mass killings of civilians both during and after the Vietnam war. He also carried out policies of human mutilations, summary executions and burying people alive.  

Another one of Gann’s 2024 Instagram posts featured a graphic with an inverted red triangle with text that read: “you can’t support / palestinian liberation / without supporting / palestinian resistance.” Below this statement was more text that said “reject normalization / support the resistance.” The post also featured an image of men with keffiyehs covering their faces.

Among anti-Israel activists, the term “resistance” is a euphemism for terrorism and is used to glorify and encourage anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence.  

Proponents of the “anti-normalization” policy seek to police all interactions between Israelis and Palestinians and shut down all conversations and interactions perceived as being ideologically unaligned with their own agenda.

Another one of Gann’s 2024 Instagram posts featured a pro-Hamas graphic titled: “DECOLONIZATION / IS A FORCE OF NATURE.” The graphic showed a hand emerging from underground while holding a weapon in a raised first, alluding to Hamas terror tunnels. The graphic also showed paragliders descending from the air, alluding to the Hamas terror attacks of October 7, 2023.

Hamas terror tunnels are intended for mass murders and hostage-taking scenarios against Israeli civiliansand soldiers. They stretch from the Gaza Strip into Israel.  

In the October 7, 2023, Hamas terror attack on Israel, numerous terrorists infiltrated into Israel in motorized paragliders. Hamas terrorists descended in gliders on the Nova Music Festival, where they slaughtered over 360 unarmed young men and women. In the wake of the atrocities, images of Hamas militants on paragliders served to symbolize and glorify the deadly attacks.

Hamas has been designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S., Canada, European Union, Israel and other countries. Founded in 1987, it has killed thousands of Israeli civilians through mass shootings and suicide bombings. Hamas has also kidnapped children, families and the elderly and held them hostage in Gaza. It has desecrated [slide 7] dead bodies and launched numerous rocket attacks against Israeli civilians. 

Glorifying Violence

Gann celebrated violence in a 2024 Instagram post, according to a tip submitted to Canary Mission in July 2024.

Gann’s post featured an image of the large sign at a McDonald’s restaurant on fire. She captioned the image: “INSPIRING ME TO START A / 2024 VISION BOARD…”

Hatred of Israel

Gann spread hatred of Israel in a 2024 Instagram post, according to a tip submitted to Canary Mission in July 2024.

Gann’s post featured a photo of a banner at an anti-Israel protest that read: “Israel is a Zionist / Terrorist Organization.”

As of December 2023, Gann’s Instagram Stories titled: “ms.gann.on.the.gram” re-posted [slide 8] a post from anti-Israel professor Noura Erakat that said, referring to Israel’s war against Hamas: “...A nuclear power is destroying a people with precision technology, kidnapping children for military trials, unleashing talking drones to porches threatening them w violence, & claiming the mantle of victimhood. #Gaza #Genocide #Freedom.”

Also as of December 2023, Gann’s Instagram Stories titled: “ms.gann.on.the.gram” re-posted [slide 9] a statement from the PPC regarding their December 3, 2023 protest, in which they said they would “continue to protest, Israel's decades long violent colonization of Palestine, the most recent manifestation of which is the ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.”

Gann’s shared post also accused [slide 10] Israel of “apartheid” and [slide 12] claimed that “the displacement of Black and Brown people in Philadelphia stems from the same violent institutions that are perpetrating the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.”

Hatred of America

As of December 2023, Gann’s Instagram Stories Highlights titled “RJOC” posted [slide 1] a June 30, 2020 photo of Gann wearing a mask and holding a sign that said: “AmeriKKKa is lucky that all Black folks want is equality, not REVENGE.”

The term “Amerikkka” uses the initials of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) as a way to demonize America as “fascist or racist.”  

Hatred of the Police

As of December 2023, Gann’s Instagram Stories Highlights titled “RJOC” posted [slide 5] a July 25, 2020 photo captioned with lyrics to a song that said: “This ain’t conscious rap, this s**t ignorant, n****, hair trigger. Ain’t no fun when the rabbit got the gun. When I c*** back, police better run. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, f*** 12…”

“F**k 12,” or “F 12,” is modern slang that generally means “F**k the police.”

Anti-Israel Activism as a Teacher

In September 2024, as a PEFP member, Gann gave a presentation where she accused [slide 1 ; 00:00:18] Israel of committing “genocide” and [00:00:40] “apartheid.” Gann also claimed [00:00:48] that “by standing with Palestine, we also stand against white supremacy, imperialism, colonialism and state violence wherever it rears its head.”

Co-led by Gann, RJOC has organized multiple teach-ins for Palestine in 2023 and 2024 in Philadelphia public schools, aimed to promote anti-Israel views on “K-12 teachers and education professionals.” RJOC also provides “Educator Lesson Plans” for teachers and lists as a resource the Teach Palestine Project.

Gann’s activism was part of an anti-Semitism scandal in SDP detailed below. 

In November 2023, after Hamas terrorists murdered nearly 1,200 Israelis on October 7, 2023, SDP offered teachers an anti-Israel professional development course. The curriculum claimed that Israel was carrying out the “colonization of Palestine” and that Israel’s war against Hamas was a “genocide in Gaza and the West Bank.”

The course was titled: “Decolonizing the Curriculum: Brief History of Palestine and the Creation of Israel: Contextualizing the Current Conflict and Genocide.” A summary on the SDP portal said teachers would be “better equipped to have conversations and facilitate lessons with their students” about Israel. After local news sites publicized the course, SDP removed it from the portal.
 
SDP continued to come under pressure from activist groups to teach anti-Israel material in K-12 classrooms, including groups representing teachers and parents. Two such groups were the Racial Justice Organizing Committee (RJOC) and the Philadelphia Educators for Palestine (PEFP), led by SDP high school teacher Keziah Ridgeway.

RJOC organized anti-Israel “teach-ins” in late 2023 and throughout 2024. RJOC also provided “Educator Lesson Plans” for teachers, listing as a resource the Teach Palestine Project, a pro-terror and anti-Israel teaching resource. In May 2024, PEFP called on SDP to meet six demands. Among them were: “to unequivocally condemn the ongoing genocide waged on the Palestinian people” and “to release a ceasefire resolution [with regard to Israel’s war against Hamas terrorists].”

SDP had been under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights since April 2024, after a group of over 200 parents filed a complaint against the district. The complaint alleged there was “persistent harassment and bullying of Jewish students” and “inflammatory anti-Jewish and anti-Israel messages on social media and even in the classroom” by teachers and administrators at schools across Philadelphia.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true. 

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”  

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.


BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
