Elana Goldman
Overview
Elana Goldman has demonized Israel and spread hatred of Zionists and Zionism. She has also expressed support for violent protesters and demonized pro-Israel members of the LGBTQ community.Goldman has also opposed the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act (AAA), a bipartisan bill drafted in response to growing anti-Semitism in the United States.
Goldman is a co-founder of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) chapter at Portland State (PSU). She is also an activist with Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights (SUPER), an affiliate of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). According to a September 28, 2018 tweet, the groups combined to create a “newly formed JVP/SUPER chapter.”
Goldman is affiliated with Youth Against Settlements (YAS), an anti-Israel NGO based in Hebron and has shared their content on social media.
Goldman has promoted the #returnthebirthright initiative launched by JVP against the Birthright Israel Jewish heritage tour, participated in anti-Israel campus activism, and is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Goldman was a member of the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network (IJAN) Facebook group, as of January 2019. As of May 2022, the group was private.
As of May 2019, Goldman’s LinkedIn page said she was a student at PSU since 2015, studying Women’s studies and Child, Youth and Family Studies, slated to graduate in 2020. As of May 2019, her LinkedIn also said she was employed as a “dog handler” at “Dog Days PDX” in Portland, Oregon, since November 2017.
In November 2018, Goldman’s Facebook page said she was a camp counselor for Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington.
As of May 2021, Goldman’s LinkedIn said she was a “Youth Worker” with Janus Youth Programs since January 2021. As of the same date, Goldman was also listed as a “Rabbi’s Assistant” on the website at the P’nai Or of Portland synagogue.
In April 2022, Goldman’s LinkedIn said she was a Social Worker at Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles since January 2022.
On February 8, 2022, Goldman tweeted she moved to Los Angeles, California.
In April, 2021 Goldman wrote on Twitter than she had a job at a “liberal zionist” synagogue and that she was “slowly planting anti-zionist seeds” in her students.
As of April 2022, Goldman used the name “Elana Rae” on Facebook.
Demonizing Israel
On May 11, 2021 Goldman tweeted: “The IDF [Israel Defense Forces] is a terrorist organization.”
On May 8, 2021 Goldman tweeted: “Reminder that Israel trains US police, the US gives 10 million dollars a DAY to Israel, 3 billion a year. The US funds Palestinian genocide. Both Democrats and Republicans in the US fund ongoing Palestinian disposition & ethnic cleansing. #EndTheDeadlyExchange #SaveSheikhJarrah.”

Between May 4-5, 2019, Hamas and Islamic Jihad launched 600 rockets at southern Israel from the Gaza strip.
On December 16, 2018, Goldman tweeted: “... ISRAEL WAS PLANNED AND MAPPED OUT TO ETHNICALLY CLEANSE PALESTINIANS..”
In the same thread, she tweeted: “There is no justifiable excuse to be a liberal zionist knowing the state of Israel was CREATED by ethnically cleansing Palestinian homes, land, and people. There is no justification. It is purely selfishness, not acknowledging your own greed, and imbedded racism.”
In November 2018, Goldman tweeted that she didn’t know exactly what career she wanted to pursue after graduating, but she was “passionate about educating jewish youth about the history of the creation of the state of Israel and the displacement of Palestinians.”
On October 29, 2018, two days after an anti-Semitic mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Goldman commented on Israel’s official condolences [00:00:07] to the Jews of Pittsburgh, tweeting: “Israel and zionists show their true colors once again exploiting the deaths of Jewish people to promote a racist nationstate.”
She went on to claim: “Israel does not care about diaspora Jews. Israel does not care about our safety, our livelihoods, our traditions, our communities.”
Goldman then tweeted: “Israels agenda is a white nationalist fascist one. Funded & ruled by racism. Don’t think for one second that the Israeli government cares about the Jewish people in the diaspora as they claim to. Early zionists worked with nazis. Do you think we’d forget that? It’s all very clear.”
On October 15, 2018, tweeted: “Being ostracized by everyone in your community that you thought loved you? Definitely painful. Refusing to stay silent while a genocide of people is being done in your name? Worth the pain.”
On October 8, 2018, Goldman tweeted a photo montage of anti-Zionist ultra-Orthodox Jews burning an Israeli flag.
On July 31, 2018, in response to a tweet by Lana Del Rey discussing her then-upcoming concert in Israel, Goldman tweeted: “I hope she doesn’t end up performing in Tel Aviv in the future and continues down the road of educating herself. Lana, there is no “Israel and Palestine”. All of it is occupied Palestine. It is a place created on stolen land. I hope you continue to learn from this moral choice.”
On July 28, 2018, Goldman tweeted that she had been detained at the airport upon exiting Israel, saying: “Was just interrogated and held for 2 hours in the Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv. I’m okay now and made my flight but they knew I was in the West Bank, they knew I was in a ‘demonstration’ otherwise known as clashes between kids and soldiers and they knew I was anti-Israel.”
On May 26, 2018, Goldman tweeted: “Can’t stop thinking about how many Jews are relatives of holocaust survivors but comply to the war crimes of Israel and approve of and support the murder and genocide of the Palestinian people.”
Goldman’s Instagram post included a photo of herself marching, with a sign that said: “FREE GAZA.”
Hatred of Zionists
On June 5, 2021, Goldman tweeted: “never met a zionist who wasn’t ugly 💋.”On May 19, 2021, Goldman shared a graphic on Twitter depicting a white man speaking to himself in the mirror saying, “YOU are indigenous to Palestine.” The graphic was headlined: “Zionists who were born and raised in new york every morning.”
On May 13, 2021 Goldman posted an anti-Zionist infographic to Instagram, alleging that Israel was committing “war crimes in the name of religion.”
Goldman commented: “...our role in dismantling Zionism and the apartheid colonial state of Israel is important…#FreePalestine #SaveSheikJarrah from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free. ❤️🇵🇸.”
“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is a chant calling to dismantle the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state.
On May 9, 2021, Goldman tweeted: “Just a reminder that you cannot be a zionist and a feminist💓.”
On May 8, 2021 Goldman tweeted, accusing Israel of “war crimes” and Zionist organizations of “normalization of Islamophobia in Jewish communities.”

Hatred of Zionism
On December 16, 2018, Goldman tweeted: “Zionism in its very core has always been a branch of white nationalism and racism. Zionism from the BEGINNING has been settler colonialism.”
Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.
On December 7, 2018, Goldman responded on Twitter to a video shared by a pro-Israel organization featuring Jewish students at New York University (NYU) describing how BDS makes them less safe on campus.
Goldman tweeted: “Ever stop to think about why you’re being ‘targeted’? Stop conflating all Jewish voices with Zionism. There were prominent Jewish voices helping to lead the BDS resolution. We don’t want college campuses that are complacent in war crimes and apartheid. This is the first of many.”

Supporting Violent Protesters
On May 17, 2018, during the “March of Return” protests on the Israel-Gaza border, Goldman posted on Instagram: “#FREEGAZA #FREE PALESTINE. As a Jew and as a human being I am outraged and horrified. Israel has committed war crimes against Palestinian people since the creation of the state of Israel....Supporting Israel is an act of violence and genocide.”
In May 2018, terror group Hamas instigated violent riots on the Israeli-Gaza border. Thousands of rioters attempted to breach Israel’s border fence, declaring their intention to harm Jews across the border under the pretext of “peaceful resistance.”
On May 16, 2018, a Hamas senior official, Salah al-Bardawil, stated that 50 out of 62 protesters killed during the May 14 Gaza border protest were Hamas operatives. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) also claimed that three of its members were killed at the same protest.
On May 14, 2018, Goldman tweeted: “Israel was CREATED as a colonizer state. This massacre is not out of their character. It is not shocking that the US (another colonizer) is in great support of Israel. This is exactly the intent zionists wanted. Please do not be fooled. Zionists wanted this. Zionists support this.”
Demonizing Pro-Israel Members of LGBTQ Community
On October 9, 2018, Goldman tweeted about the protest of an event by A Wider Bridge, a North American LGBTQ organization building support for Israel and its LGBTQ community. The event, titled “No Pride in Occupation! Counter-education against a Wider Bridge,” was held at the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education.Goldman urged others to come protest and tweeted: “PORTLAND- please come out if you can THIS THURSDAY and show this former idf soldier that there is absolutely NO pride in occupation.”
Goldman continued: “A trans idf commander is coming to portland on thursday & the irony is that the event is taking place at a holocaust museum. Apparently this isn’t new. These people’s cognitive dissonance is absolutely insane.”
Goldman further continued that A Wider Bridge was part of “an industry by and for zionists to profit off the holocaust by promoting ethnic cleansing and apartheid for another group of people. When we said never again we should’ve meant it for all human beings, not just Ashkenazi Jews. The cognitive dissonance plants itself deep.”
Goldman ended by stating that “It feels like a betrayal to be protesting at a holocaust memorial museum. But if that is what it takes for Jews attending this event to realize they’re praising a war criminal, that’s what they’ll get. Regardless of course I’ll be there loud n clear with an anti-pinkwashing group.”
“Pinkwashing” is a claim that Israel advocates manipulate the LGBTQ community in order to garner support for Israel.
Opposing the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act
In April of 2019,Goldman signed a JVP-launched petition opposing the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act (AAA), which was introduced to the U.S. Senate in March 2019.The AAA directed the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) to use the U.S. State Department’s definition of anti-Semitism when evaluating hostile environment complaints. The JVP petition asserted that “support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, is not inherently antisemitic” and that the bill “conflates legitimate criticism of the policies of the Israeli government with antisemitism.”
Condemning Jewish Heritage Tour
On February 3, 2019, the JVP PSU Twitter page shared photos of Goldman holding signs that said: “It’s not a ‘free trip.’ Palestinians are paying for it #Return the Birthright” and “I #ReturnTheBirthright because wherever we live, thats our home.”The caption read: “As a young Jew I #ReturnTheBirthright because a free trip on stolen land doesn’t define my Judaism!”
On Nov 30, 2018, Goldman tweeted: “PLEASE SHARE! JVP PSU’s second radical Shabbat dinner will be next Friday December 7th, 6-8pm in Cramer 325. Interested in learning about why we should #Returnthebirthright? Want to eat some free delicious Hanukkah themed food? WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE
On July 10, 2018, Goldman mocked a Jerusalem Post editorial titled “Keep politics out of Birthright,” tweeting: “Keep Politics Out Of Our Zionist Sponsored Propoganda Tour That Promotes White American Jews To Visit And Move To Stolen Palestinian Land And Have White Ashkenazi Zionist Babies”
On August 7, 2018, Goldman started a Twitter thread on Birthright, writing: “STOP GOING ON BIRTHRIGHT. BOYCOTT BIRTHRIGHT. STOP NORMALIZING BIRTHRIGHT. STAND AGAINST ANY FREE TRIP ON STOLEN LAND. STAND AGAINST RIGHT WING ZIONIST NATIONALISTS. YOU CANNOT BE ANTI COLONIZATION AND ANTIRACIST AND BE PRO FREE PROPAGANDA TRIP. THIS ISNT A HARD CONCEPT TO GRASP.”
Goldman continued: “I’m still furious that American Jews keep giving this trip so much hype and validation even if they’re ‘critical of the occupation’ whatever the f**k that means YOU DO NOT NEED TO TAKE A FREE TRIP ON STOLEN LAND TO SUDDENLY RECOGNIZE ISRAELI WAR CRIMES AND HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS.”
Goldman concluded: “THE NAME “BIRTH RIGHT” IN ITSELF IS INHERENTLY RACIST. LETS TALK ABOUT THE NAME. IMPLYING THAT AMERICAN JEWS HAVE A RIGHT WHEN THEY ARE BORN TO SEE A PLACE THEY HAVE NO EMOTIONAL OR PHYSICAL TIES TO WHEN PALESTINIANS CANNOT RETURN HOME AFTER BEING DISPLACED FOR GENERATIONS. BIRTH RIGHT? BIRTH WRONG THE LAND WAS STOLEN ALL ALONG.”
On June 27, 2018, Goldman tweeted: “My favorite hobby as of lately has been walking around Jerusalem, bumping into kids on birthright and pretending I don’t know what it is. Then when they tell me I say ‘omg! Is that the free trip on stolen land?’ And see their reaction. We love an anti-zionist interrogator queen.”
Goldman continued: “You don’t need to take a free trip on stolen land to have a “life changing experience” about the ‘conflict’ where you suddenly view Palestinian people as human beings. You should have the moral decency to criticize a place that puts groups of people under occupation w/out this. Birthright promotes white, American, Jewish, supremacy on stolen land. Say it with me everyone!”
Goldman concluded: “If it takes a free trip across the world on stolen land to begin to see Palestinians as human beings as a privileged white Jewish person living in America, you have some major anti-racist work to do. THIS IS NOT A CONFLICT. IT IS AN OCCUPATION. AN OCCUPATION. REMOVE THE WORD CONFLICT FROM YOUR VOCABULARY. THIS IS OCCUPATION AND THIS IS APARTHEID.”
On January 30, 2018, Goldman tweeted: “I keep getting sponsored birthright ads on my ig and it’s hilarious because all the people who seem to be on their ‘birthright’ in the ads are ALL aryan blonde haired blue eyed DEVILS.”
Return the Birthright Campaign
In September of 2017, JVP issued its #ReturntheBirthright campaign manifesto, calling on American Jews to boycott the Birthright Israel (Birthright) program. Birthright was founded by Jewish philanthropists “in 1999 to address the growing divide between young Diaspora Jewish adults and the land and people of Israel.”After decades of demographic decline in the American Jewish community, Birthright set out “to strengthen Jewish identity, build a lasting bond with the land and people of Israel, and reinforce the solidarity of Jewish people worldwide.” The program offers “the gift of a life-changing, 10-day trip to Israel to young Jewish adults between the ages of 18 and 26.”
JVP’s anti-Birthright campaign was launched precisely to coincide with “the very moment that college students across America are returning to campus and registration for Birthright winter visits are underway.”
The #returnthebirthright manifesto accused Israel of “ethnic cleansing” and alleged “the modern state of Israel is predicated on the ongoing erasure of Palestinians.”
The text claimed: “We reject the offer of a free trip to a state that does not represent us, a trip that is only ‘free’ because it has been paid for by the dispossession of Palestinians.”
The manifesto concluded: “And as we reject this, we commit to promoting the right to return of Palestinian refugees… Israel is not our Birthright… Return the Birthright.”
On June 22, 2017, just prior to the launch of JVP’s #returnthebirthright campaign, JVP received a $140,00 two-year grant for general support for its operations from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF).
Since 2015, JVP has received $280,000 from RBF, which has a history of supporting anti-Jewish causes, including BDS campaigns and various organizations that promote BDS campaigns throughout the United States.
Anti-Israel Campus Activism
On September 19, 2018, Goldman posted on Facebook: “HELLOOO everyone!! please share I made this post public!! are you interested in Palestine solidarity work? Are you tired of an overwhelming Zionist and Pro-Israel voice representing all Jews on your campus? Want to organize with Jewish Voice for Peace? Want to learn more about anti-zionism? IF YOU ANSWERED YES TO ANY OF THESE QUESTIONS KEEP READING!! This fall I am starting a new JVP chapter this fall at Portland State University and really need all the support I can get.Goldman continued: “As of right now I have support from the Portland chapter of JVP and other national chapters but could REALLY use some more local organizers who are as passionate as me about this becoming a real community!!!”
On September 25, 2018, Goldman posted on Facebook, announcing the formation of JVP at PSU: “I’m proud and happy to announce our new chapter has a facebook page!!! give us a like and a share to stay updated on upcoming events this fall! ❤”
On October 10, 2018, Goldman posted on Facebook about a JVP at PSU event called: “Radical Shabbat Dinner” and captioned it: “OUR FIRST EVER RADICAL ANTI-ZIONIST SHABBAT IS NEXT FRIDAY I’M SO EXCITED YOU BETTER BE THERE!!”
The event description asked: “Ready to learn about anti-zionism, BDS and Palestine solidarity?”
Supporting BDS
On November 13, 2018 Goldman tweeted: “If you live in portland and support a free palestine, I urge you to get involved in this campaign. It’s one thing to support BDS in theory but it’s important to be loud and clear about ending the sponsorship that supplies parts of weapons that shoot Palestinians. Especially now.”Also on November 13, 2018, Goldman tweeted: “Israel and the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] have ties everywhere in this country sometimes in the sneakiest places. We must hold the US and US cities accountable for their parts in Israeli war crimes, ESPECIALLY when it’s happening in our your own city. BDS will win.”
On August 20, 2018, Goldman posted a petition to Facebook to convince singer Lana Del Rey to cancel her scheduled concert in Tel Aviv.
Goldman commented: “So many people I know are fans or have been fans of Lana Del Rey for years including myself. We are calling out to her to cancel her show in Israel and respect the Palestinian call for BDS and the right of return. The Great Return March is still happening in Gaza and over 160 people have been murdered.”
Goldman continued: “Concerts like this are a tactic of normalization and we want her to understand the responsibility she upholds by playing a show on stolen land. Her playing this concert is just another role of normalization in apartheid and settler colonialism.”
JVP
JVP was founded in Berkeley, California in 1996, as an activist group with an emphasis on the “Jewish tradition” of peace, social justice and human rights. The organization is currently led by Rebecca Vilkomerson and its board members include Israel critics Naomi Klein, Judith Butler, Noam Chomsky and Tony Kushner.
JVP, which generally employs civil disobedience tactics to disrupt pro-Israel speakers and events, consists of American Jews and non-Jewish “allies” highly critical of Israeli policies. A staunch supporter of the BDS movement, JVP claims to aim its campaigns at companies that either support the Israeli military (Hewlett-Packard) or are active in the West Bank (SodaStream).
Although several Jewish groups critical of Israeli policies, like J Street and Partners for a Progressive Israel, make efforts to operate within the mainstream American Jewish community, JVP functions outside. The group is often criticized for serving as a tokenized Jewish voice for the pro-Palestinian camp and is widely regarded as the BDS movement’s “Jewish wing.”
JVP denies the notion of “Jewish peoplehood” and has even gone so far as to refer to its own Ashkenazi (Jews who spent the Diaspora in European countries) leadership as “white supremacy inside of JVP.”
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has accused JVP of being “the largest and most influential Jewish anti-Zionist group in the United States,” and said the group “exploits Jewish culture and rituals to reassure its own supporters that opposition to Israel not only does not contradict, but is actually consistent with, Jewish values.”
The ADL also claimed that “JVP consistently co-sponsors rallies to oppose Israeli military policy that are marked by signs and slogans comparing Israel to Nazi Germany, demonizing Jews and voicing support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.”
According to the ADL website, JVP “uses its Jewish identity to shield the anti-Israel movement from allegations of anti-Semitism and provide it with a greater degree of legitimacy and credibility.”
SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
