Glorifying Anti-Israel Agitators

On March 9, 2019, Provinsal was featured in a PSU JVP Facebook photo, holding a sign that read: “We #StandWithIlhan because Palestinian Lives Matter.”

Ilhan Omar was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018. In February 2019, top Congressional leaders denounced Omar for tweeting anti-Semitic remarks.Omar has demonized Israel and endorsed BDS. In July 2019, Omar introduced a pro-BDS resolution in the U.S. Congress, which she described as “an opportunity for us to explain why it is we support…the BDS movement.”

The JVP PSU Facebook photo’s caption read: “Thanks to everyone who came to our radical Shabbat last night! From Portland, Oregon we are sending solidarity. #WeStandWithIlhan because anti-Zionism is not anti-semitism.”

On February 12, 2019, Provinsal responded to US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and tweeted: “Saying what AIPAC does and what AIPAC says it does on its own website isn’t controversial. Please listen to @jvplive and stand with Ilhan.”

On May 9, 2018, Provinsal tweeted: “Ahed Tamimi fans ONLY.”

Ahed Tamimi has a long history of physically attacking Israeli soldiers. Tamimi is the daughter of Bassem Tamimi, who is known for exploiting young children as political props in staged confrontations with Israeli soldiers.

On April 28, 2018, Provinsal tweeted: “This is an Ahed Tamimi fan account.”

Supporting Violent Protesters

Provinsal signed an April 2018 JVP petition, as a student at PSU. The petition was in response to the violent March for Return on Israel’s Gaza border, addressed by Portland JVP to U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley from Oregon.

On March 30, 2018, some 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza approached Israel’s border to take part in “Land Day Protests,” or the “March of Return.” The march was organized and funded by Hamas as a campaign of violent protests to spotlight the Palestinian demand to “return” to Israel. The “right of return” has since been discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

The petition urged Senator Merkley to “join” a call “on the Israel Defense Forces to exercise restraint and respect the rights of Palestinians to peacefully protest” and “join...calling on the Israeli military to comply with international law and endorsed the call of the Israeli human rights group, B’tselem, asking Israeli soldiers to disobey illegal orders to shoot at unarmed civilians.”

Most of the Gazans who died between March 30 and April 6, 2018, were identified as terror operatives who were killed while carrying out terrorist attacks, rioting against IDF forces or attempting to breach the border fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip.

The petition also claimed: “Tens of thousands of Palestinians have protested peacefully. No demonstrators have carried firearms,” alleged Israel fired “on unarmed demonstrators” and that “The Israeli government has offered no credible evidence that any demonstrators posed a serious threat.”

March participants sent scores of kites bearing explosive devices across Israel’s border to burn Israeli crops and homes. Participants also attempted to breach the border fence, which caused the Israeli Defense Forces to respond with live fire. Agitators also threw Molotov cocktails and firebombs, shot firearms and threw rocks.

On March 27, 2018, Provinsal tweeted: “Good morning, girls. What a day to boycott israeli apartheid!”

Condemning Jewish Heritage Tour

On December 6, 2018, Provinsal tweeted a flyer from a “Radical Shabbat Dinner” event called: “Bye Bye Birthright,” hosted by JVP PSU. She commented: “Good morning Portland :) if you want to talk s**t about birthright and eat food come to PSU Jewish Voice for Peace shabbat tomorrow!! All are welcome obv!!”

Birthright Israel is a heritage trip to Israel for Jewish young adults from across the world.

On July 15, 2018, Provinsal, scolded a group of IfNotNow (INN) activists who walked off their Birthright trip, tweeting: “Omg!!! I do not care at all if people walked off birthright to an anti occupation activity!!! They are still on stolen land for FREE where palestinians cannot even set foot. I do not care. Like if thet're (sic) anti occupation why the f**k are they supporting birthright? Makes no sense.”

Also that day, Provinsal tweeted: “STOP GOING ON BIRTHRIGHT.”

On January 6, 2019 Provinsal shared information on Twitter about a JVP PSU event, scheduled for January 13, 2019, called: “Inside Gaza: An Evening with Dr. Clyde Farris.”

The event’s Facebook description said that Dr. Farris was coming to speak about his experience helping people in Gaza and “the conditions inside what has been called “the largest open-air prison on Earth.”

On September 28, 2018, Provinsal shared information for a JVP-hosted event on Twitter called: “War Criminals Not Welcome Here!” The event was a protest against former Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who was coming to speak at the local Jewish Community Center.

Provinsal tweeted: “Hello Portland, Oregon. War criminal Ehud Barak will be here on the 14th of October. If you, like me, hate apartheid and support Palestinian human rights please please join us outside the MJCC and we'll scream our heads off!

On May 15, 2018, Provinsal tweeted: “Hope to see all the good bitches in Portland Oregon at the Nakba rally.”

The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.

A “Nakba Day March” was scheduled for Portland Oregon on May 15, 2018, hosted by Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights (SUPER), the SJP chapter at PSU, in addition to Portland JVP.

The event’s Facebook description said the rally was “in support of the people of Gaza's Great March of Return and for the rights of all Palestinians to return to their ancestral homelands، the end of the Gaza blockade and the end of the occupation.”

On April 6, 2018 Provinsal tweeted a screenshot of a poster that read: “Boycott Israeli Apartheid!!!” Provinsal commented: “How many people will this piss off on my instagram?”

JVP

JVP was founded in Berkeley, California in 1996, as an activist group with an emphasis on the “Jewish tradition” of peace, social justice and human rights. The organization is currently led by Rebecca Vilkomerson and its board members include Israel critics Naomi Klein, Judith Butler, Noam Chomsky and Tony Kushner.

JVP, which generally employs civil disobedience tactics to disrupt pro-Israel speakers and events, consists of American Jews and non-Jewish “allies” highly critical of Israeli policies. A staunch supporter of the BDS movement, JVP claims to aim its campaigns at companies that either support the Israeli military (Hewlett-Packard) or are active in the West Bank (SodaStream).

Although several Jewish groups critical of Israeli policies, like J Street and Partners for a Progressive Israel, make efforts to operate within the mainstream American Jewish community, JVP functions outside. The group is often criticized for serving as a tokenized Jewish voice for the pro-Palestinian camp and is widely regarded as the BDS movement’s “Jewish wing.”

JVP denies the notion of “Jewish peoplehood” and has even gone so far as to refer to its own Ashkenazi (Jews who spent the Diaspora in European countries) leadership as “white supremacy inside of JVP.”

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has accused JVP of being “the largest and most influential Jewish anti-Zionist group in the United States,” and said the group “exploits Jewish culture and rituals to reassure its own supporters that opposition to Israel not only does not contradict, but is actually consistent with, Jewish value.”

The ADL also claimed that “JVP consistently co-sponsors rallies to oppose Israeli military policy that are marked by signs and slogans  comparing Israel to Nazi Germany, demonizing Jews and voicing support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.”

According to the ADL website, JVP “uses its Jewish identity to shield the anti-Israel movement from allegations of anti-Semitism and provide it with a greater degree of legitimacy and credibility.”

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
