Adan Deeb

Overview

Adan Deeb has promoted a terrorist leader, glorified terrorists, spread anti-Semitism and promoted incitement. Deeb has also spread hatred of Zionists and Israel.

Deeb was affiliated with the General Union of Palestine Students (GUPS) at San Francisco State University (SFSU) in 2021. GUPS is an affiliate of the national anti-Israel campus group Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP)

In 2021, Deeb expressed support for Yasmeen Mashayekh, a graduate student at the University of Southern California (USC) and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Senator who tweeted her desire to “kill every motherf**king Zionist.”

Deeb is also a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

As of October 2022, Deeb’s LinkedIn said she was pursuing a master’s degree in Biology with an IB (Integrative Biology) concentration at SFSU, and that she was interested in pursuing a PhD. Deeb’s LinkedIn also said she was a Genentech Foundation Fellow.

As of the same date, Deeb’s LinkedIn said she had been a part-time teaching assistant for a human biology laboratory at SFSU since August 2020, and a part-time “Education Specialist and BTP Coordinator” at SaveNature.Org since April 2022.

Deeb’s LinkedIn also said she graduated from the University of Kentucky (UKY) with a bachelor’s degree in Biology/Biological Sciences in 2020, and that she was located in San Francisco, California.

As of July 2022, Deeb used the handle “@woolfgorl” and the username “عدن [Adan]” on Twitter.

Promoting a Terrorist Leader

On September 24, 2020, Deeb tweeted in opposition to Zoom and YouTube’s cancellation of a panel featuring terrorist Leila Khaled that was to have taken place the previous day

In her tweet, Deeb wrote: “first zoom cancels the event and THEN YouTube cuts off and removes the livestream too. Free speech, but not when Palestinians are talking. Guess we know what side of history they wanna be on🤷🏼‍♀️.”

Leila Khaled is a leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and participated in the hijacking of TWA Flight 840 in 1969 and El Al Flight 219 in 1970. As of 2017, Khaled was a member of PFLP's Political Bureau. Khaled has said that the second intifada failed because it was not violent enough, advocated [00:36:07] for the use of children in terror activities and compared Zionists to Nazis.

Glorifying Terrorists

Deeb retweeted a March 8, 2021 tweet that said: “It’s international women’s day! You know what that means! Celebrating girlboss Leila Khalid 😌✨💕.” The tweet featured a photo of Khaled holding an assualt rifle.

On May 13, 2021, Deeb tweeted: “This is the martyr in nablus who injured 2 zionist officers before he was shot dead.” She was referring to an incident on the same day in which a Palestinian armed with a knife and gun opened fire on Israeli soldiers and injured two, before he was neutralized.

Deeb retweeted a September 6, 2021 tweet that said: “6 Palestinian political prisoners managed to escape a high-security Israeli jail this morning. I am going to bed with a smile on my face and dreaming of the day all prisons are abolished. ❤️.”

On September 6, 2021, six Palestinian prisoners escaped from the maximum-security Gilboa Prison in Israel. The escaped prisoners were convicted members of the terror organizations Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, who were jailed for their involvement in attacks carried out during the second intifada. All were recaptured by September 19, 2021, by Israeli authorities.

Spreading Anti-Semitism

Deeb retweeted a January 21, 2022 tweet mocking a headline about skin cancer rates in Israel, with a comment that said: “People who’d get sunburn from a desk lamp think they’re native to the middle east.”

One way that anti-Israel activists spread anti-Semitism is to claim [00:06:46] that Israeli Jews, particularly Ashkenazi Jews, do not descend from the ancient Israelites.

This claim alleges that Israeli Jews are white Europeans who lack a connection to the Land of Israel. The Khazar myth is a common version of this claim which is used to delegitimize [00:02:16] the existence of the modern State of Israel.

Deeb retweeted a December 13, 2021 tweet with a photo of a woman in a keffiyeh holding a sign that said: “THE NAZIS ARE STILL AROUND THEY CALL THEMSELVES ZIONISTS NOW.”

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) highlights as one possible contemporary example of anti-Semitism: “Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.” The U.S. State Department adopted the IHRA’s working definition of anti-Semitism in 2016. Over 40 countries have adopted the definition as well.

Deeb retweeted a May 14, 2021 tweet that said: “We should take take the boycott seriously #BoycottIsrael #NaziIsrael #GenocideinGaza.”

In May 2021, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists fired over 4,300 rockets from Gaza at major population centers in Israel. Israel responded by launching “Operation Guardian of the Walls (OGW),” carrying out targeted military strikes in Gaza.

Deeb retweeted a May 12, 2021 tweet by anti-Israel activist Mohammed El-Kurd that said: “SHUT THE F**K UP MY GOD YOU ARE SO DELUDED. YOU ARE KILLING MURDERING BOMBING ETHNICALLY CLEANSING COLONIZING LYNCHINGKRISTALLNACHTING US IN REAL TIME CURRENTLY RIGHT NOW…”

Kristallnacht [Night of Broken Glass] was a violent pogrom by Nazis against Jews across Germany in November 1938.

Promoting Incitement

Deeb retweeted a May 23, 2021 tweet that said: “Settlers are storming the courtyards of Al-Aqsa mosque under the protection of IOF [Israeli Occupation Forces].” The tweet included a video showing Jewish visitors walking in the Temple Mount compound.

Palestinians and anti-Israel activists have historically described visits by Jews to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem as “incursions” during which Jews purportedly “storm” the Temple Mount and Al-Aqsa Mosque. Palestinians have also frequently used the mosque to stockpile stone slabs, fireworks and rocks, with which they attack Israeli security officers and non-Muslim visitors to the Temple Mount.

“IOF” stands for Israeli Occupation Forces, a derogatory name used by anti-Israel activists to demonize Israel’s army in place of its official name, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Deeb retweeted a May 10, 2021 tweet that said: “Happening now inside masjid el Aqsa and people are getting chocked from the gas bombs.” The tweet included a video showing clashes at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

On May 7-10, 2021, violent clashes broke out between Palestinian worshippers and Israeli police at the Al-Aqsa compound, following claims that Al-Aqsa Mosque was in danger. The allegation that Jews “threaten” to destroy Al-Aqsa has been a traditional pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before the existence of the modern Jewish state.

Hatred of Zionists

Deeb retweeted a January 19, 2022 tweet that said: “... zionism is a death cult.”

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.

On August 25, 2021, Deeb tweeted: “Back from Palestine means I’m back on public!!!!! Z10n1sts beware👿

On May 20, 2021, Deeb tweeted: “Lol I remember one yr I was in occupied Palestine visiting family & I literally passed a🤢birthright trip🤢

Birthright Israel is a heritage trip to Israel for Jewish young adults from across the world.

On May 12, 2021, Deeb tweeted: “F**k u. Zionist trash.”

Deeb retweeted a May 12, 2021 tweet that said: “... Zionism is an ethnic, supremacist ideology. Zionists can seem superficially reasonable until their supremacist ideology is challenged. Then the inner warmongering racist is revealed.”

Hatred of Israel

On May 14, 2021, Deeb tweeted: “Israel is full of soulless monsters.”

On May 13, 2021, Deeb tweeted: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”

“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is a chant calling to dismantle the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state.

Also on May 13, 2021, Deeb tweeted: “Last saved image is your political ideology” and included an image with text on it that said: “F**K ISRAEL ALL MY HOMIES HATE ISRAEL.”

On May 6, 2021, Deeb tweeted: “A good collection of resources for u!! F**k Israel😌.”

On October 8, 2020, Deeb tweeted about a debate by vice presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Mike Pence: “Did he just say that Jerusalem is the capital of🤢Israel🤢??? Square up b**ch I’ll fight.”

Supporting Yasmeen Mashayekh

On November 19, 2021, Deeb tweeted in support of Yasmeen Mashayekh, who was [00:11:08] in the middle of a national controversy over anti-Semitism that she spread on social media that year.

Deeb wrote in her tweet: “Genuinely amazing just how far people will go to silence Palestinian voices. This is garbage.”

Deeb’s tweet was in response to a tweet by Mashayekh claiming that “USC Viterbi released me from my Freshman Academy Coach job as retaliation against me for my political views.”

In October 2021, Mashayekh was listed as the DEI Senator for USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering. In May 2021, she tweeted: “I want to f**king kill every motherf**king Zionist.” She also tweeted: “yel3an el yahood [curse the Jews]😌.”

Mashayekh has also spread violent hatred of Israeli Jews, called for the destruction of Israel and America, expressed support for Hamas and glorified terrorists.

Supporting BDS

On May 18, 2021, Deeb tweeted a “Thread of things to boycott.” Deeb wrote at the top of the list: “since it’s trendy now here’s my isr*el boycott list.”

On the same date, Deeb also tweeted: “I use a menstrual cup and I like it even better than tampons!! Plus I get to boycott i$r*el now :-).” She included a graphic that said: “period products…r so problematic on so many levels.”

In the same thread, Deeb tweeted: “Here’s a good site for an even more comprehensive list,” and linked to the BDS movement website.

Deeb also tweeted a graphic promoting an app called Buycott. The graphic said: “‘Buycott’...will show you which of the products are israeli so you could avoid purchasing them…Boycott brands that support Apartheid Israel. It hits them where it hurts.”

GUPS SFSU - Overview

GUPS SFSU has promoted terrorists, participated in anti-Israel rallies, demonized Israel and Zionism, and campaigned for the BDS Movement as part of its anti-Israel activism.

GUPS SFSU was founded in 1973. Hatem Bazian was reportedly GUPS SFSU’s most prominent alumnus, as he co-founded the anti-Israel organization Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at UC-Berkeley in 2000. He also founded American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) in 2006. SJP was modeled on GUPS when it was founded.

GUPS SFSU - Demonizing Israel 2021-2022

On March 23, 2022, as part of Palestine Awareness Week (PAW), GUPS SFSU promoted on Instagram a March 29, 2022 virtual conversation with anti-Israel agitator Mohammed El-Kurd

Palestine Awareness Week (PAW) is a re-branding of Israel Apartheid Week (IAW), which called itself “an international series of events that seek to raise awareness of Israel’s settler-colonial project and apartheid system over the Palestinian people” and to build support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

On March 25, 2022, as part of PAW, GUPS SFSU promoted on Instagram a virtual conversation titled: “Palestine: ‘It’s Worse than Apartheid,’” with Ahmed Abu Artema, one of the organizers of the 2018 “Great March of Return” violent demonstrations.Artema reportedly envisoned 200,000 "peaceful protestors" breaching the Gaza border fence and invited Hamas to assist, "hoping for logistics, some media coverage and moral support."

The “March of Return” began on March 30, 2018 and was organized and funded by Hamas. Approximately 30,000 Palestinians approached Israel’s Gaza border, sending kites bearing explosive devices into Israel, shooting firearms and throwing rocks. Rioters also attempted to breach Israel’s border fence. The march was planned as a campaign of violent protests to spotlight the Palestinian demand to “return” to Israel. The “right of return” has since been discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

GUPS SFSU - Demonizing Israel 2020-2021

On March 31, 2021, GUPS SFSU promoted on Instagram “Israel Apartheid Week,” which it co-sponsored with the University of California, Berkeley anti-Israel student organization Bears for Palestine. Among the activities advertised was a lecture [slide 3] on the Palestinian “right of return” and a lecture [slide 4] with the participation of anti-Israel organization Addameer titled: “Palestinian Political Prisoners and the Case against Military Courts.”

Israel Apartheid Week (IAW), which has been re-named Palestine Awareness Week, is an annual event to build support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and “to raise awareness of Israel’s settler-colonial project and apartheid system over the Palestinian people.”

Addameer advocates on behalf of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons and has promoted the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. The organization is reportedly an “affiliate” of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror organization.

On May 14, 2021, GUPS SFSU promoted on Instagram a May 15, 2021 anti-Israel protest to take place on Israel Independence Day. The post mentioned the “ongoing Nakba,” and emphasized the need to “prioritize BDS” as well as “educate the public about israeli settler colonialism and terrorism.” Promotional material in the post accused [slide 4] Israel of apartheid.

The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.

GUPS SFSU - Anti-Israel Activism 2020-2021

On April 20, 2021, during a property dispute in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, GUPS SFSU posted to Instagram a call to sign a petition and pressure government representatives “to support the campaign against the illegal expulsion of Palestinians in Jerusalem.” The post also promoted the idea of Nakba, accusing Israel of ethnic cleasing in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

The petition claimed the pending evictions were “part of Israel's larger plan of racist colonial expansion,” and was co-sponsored by anti-Israel organizations Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), among others.

GUPS SFSU - Anti-Israel Rallies 2020-2021

On May 12, 2021, during Operation Guardian of the Walls (OGW), GUPS SFSU promoted to Instagram a May 15 protest and rally titled: “All Out For Palestine. #Nakba73 SaveSheikhjarrah #GazaUnderAttack.” The post also accused Israel of “settler colonial violence.”

The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.

In May 2021, Palestinian violence erupted regarding the eviction of over 70 Palestinian tenants illegally residing in Jewish-owned properties in Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. Following more violent incitement in Jerusalem, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists fired over 4,300 rockets into Israel. Israel then launchedOperation Guardian of the Walls (OGW), carrying out targeted military strikes in Gaza.

At the May 15 rally, protestors held signs that said: “Indigenous Land…from the River to the Sea,” accused Israel of committing genocide and apartheid, claimed: “If they [Israel] could kill Palestinians twice, they would” and expressed hatred of America. The posters also claimed that Zionism is “white settler colonialism” and promoted the BDS Movement.

“From the River to the Sea” [Palestine will be free] is from a well-known chant employed by Hamas to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state, and to dismantle the State of Israel.

At the same rally, anti-Israel professor Hatem Bazian, a featured speaker, said [00:29:18]: “There are many people that ask the question, ‘What is happening in Palestine today?’...[U.S. President] Biden and his gang, they say that Israel have the right to defend itself. Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah…in Haifa…in Ramallah, in Gaza, and in San Francisco, [are] saying: ' لننرحل [We will never leave]!’”

On May 17, 2021, during OGW, GUPS SFSU promoted on Instagram a May 18, 2021 Day of Action hosted by the Palestine Action Network (PAN) “in solidarity with the Palestinian uprising and general strike.” The post accused Israel of committing “ethnic cleansing and apartheid,” and instructed protestors to meet “in front of the israHELLI consulate.”

During the May 18 rally, anti-Israel agitator Lubna Morrar led the chant [00:00:11]: “Intifada, Intifada,” while protestors held signs that claimed “Israel = Nazi,” defended the Hamas terror group and advocated for the Palestinian “right of return.”

The term “intifada” has carried the connotation of violence, since the early 2000’s.

“Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis” is highlighted by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) as one possible contemporary example of anti-Semitism.

The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
