Palestine Writes Festival
The University of Pennsylvania's Wolf Humanities Center is sponsoring "Palestine Writes Literature Festival: Indigenous Stories of a Fabled Homeland.“ Speakers include a veritable who's who of antisemitic Israel haters, from rock star Roger Waters to former CNN commentator and now newly hired CUNY professor Marc Lamont Hill.
In fact, Waters and HIll, like many of the big names featured at the festival are not mainly known for their literary works but rather for their political activity, especially in those denigrating Israel.
When pressed to answer for enabling what will inevitably devolve into overt antisemitism on its campus, the University of Pennsylvania disingenuously said, “This public event is not organized by the university.” Yet its own Wolf Humanities Center is sponsoring it.
In a statement, the university said, “We unequivocally ... condemn antisemitism as antithetical to our institutional values … we also fiercely support the free exchange of ideas as central to our educational mission.”
One question should be posed to the university: Would they allow/sponsor a hate fest against any other minority on their premises using this logic?
Setting the Tone of the Festival
Susan Abulhawa, the organizer of the festival, uses her platform on X (formerly Twitter) to post vitriol about Israel.
“Someday we will demolish [Israel]...And the world will be a better place for it,” she posted just this year. Abulhawa also compares Zionists to Nazis, saying, “The horrors of Zionism, past and present, will someday be just as well known as the horrors of Nazism.”
Abulhawa’s website’s contact page shows a photo of her sitting at her desk in front of a war of pictures. Included in the pictures are:
Dalal Mughrabi, a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) who participated in the 1978 Coastal Road massacre in Israel – in which 38 Israeli civilians were killed including 13 children
Ghassan Kanafani, a leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberations of Palestine (PFLP), a terrorist group responsible for, among other atrocities: an attack at Israel’s international airport (in which 28 were killed), suicide bombings, the killing of Israeli government minister Rehavam Ze'evi and the massacre of worshippers in a Jerusalem synagogue.
The festival will prominently feature a screening of the antisemitic and anti-Israel film Farha, after which the director will speak. Other events include an entire panel dedicated to the works of PFLP terrorist Ghassan Khanafani.
Two convicted Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorists will also participate in the festival:
Mayss Abu Ghosh, who spent 16 months in prison in Israel for manufacturing firebombs, being a member of the student arm of the PFLP and meeting with Hezbollah in Lebanon
Wisam Rafeedie, a convicted PFLP militant who also spent time in an Israeli prison
Leadership and Programming
Huwaida Arraf, a former co-chair of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at American University’s Washington College of Law, is one of the program coordinators. A noted ally of avowed terrorists, Arraf co-founded and participated in the Free Gaza Movement, whose mission was to illegally sail flotillas with “humanitarian relief” into Gaza.
After the first boat was stopped and participants used pistols, knives and clubs against Israeli security forces, Arraf admitted that participants “weren’t carrying aid” for Gazans
Rather in addition to humanitarian items that, according to Gazans, were not in short supply, the boat was carrying weapons and military equipment.
