The Vicious Response to the Murder of a Jew
On Tuesday, February 28, 2023, Elan Ganeles, 26, a dual American-Israeli citizen was shot dead by Palestinian gunmen while driving through the Jordan Valley. Ganeles came to Israel for a year abroad in 2015. He stayed two extra years to serve as a lone soldier in the Israel Defense Forces, then went back to America to attend university.
On that fateful Tuesday, Ganeles, who lived in New York, was in Israel. He had come to bring joy to a childhood friend who was getting married. He was murdered on the way to the wedding.
Amidst the outpouring of grief for a life so tragically cut short and for a young man described so aptly as “singularly focused on making his friends feel good, on lifting them up” was hateful venom.
It was viciously spewed by radical anti-Israel activists, many of whom are featured on Canary Mission:
Asma Barakat
Asma Barakat is a student at The New School studying for a master’s degree in Sociology. She is affiliated with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at university.
In response to a tweet that read, “We are shattered by the loss of Elan Ganeles, a US-Israeli citizen & IDF [Israel Defense Forces] vet murdered today by Palestinian terrorists,” Asma Barakat tweeted, “he’s ugly and psychotic. so glad i outlived him!”
She then wrote, “Palestine also outlived him”
It was also not the first time Barakat expressed her support for the murder of Israelis. On October 17, 2021, she tweeted: “on this day 20 years ago the zionist tourism minister [Rehavam Ze’evi] began his tour of hell all thanks to the PFLP [Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine] 🇵🇸.”
Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze’evi was shot in the head by PFLP terrorists who assassinated him while he was staying in a hotel in Jerusalem.
Besides her virulent antisemitism, which is well documented on Canary Mission, Barakat hates white people equally. On February 7, 2021, she tweeted, “i can’t imagine how embarrassing it is to be white... how does it feel to be the physical manifestation of evil.”
On November 23, 2020, Barakat tweeted, “in high school, people told me they’ve never met anyone who hates white people as much as i do and i’m really proud of that.”
On October 12, 2020, Barakat tweeted: “i had a dream i beat up a white woman and i woke up rejuvenated
.”
Tara Alami
Tara Alami is an activist (as of October 2021) with the McGill University (McGill) chapter of Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR), an affiliate of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), and with the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM).
In January 2022, Alami indicated on Twitter that she was planning a career in surgery.
Alami tweeted a kissing emoji with a graphic featuring party hats with balloons spelling out “SETTLER DOWN” shortly after Ganeles was killed.
Alami has a history of celebrating the murder of Israelis. In December 30, 2021, Alami tweeted in support of a tweet that read: “This year there was 61 shooting attacks on Israelis and 18 stabbing attacks on Israelis…” Alami responded, “We’ll do better next year inshallah [God-willing]”
The next year, on January 18, 2022, Alami tweeted, “Yeah i would like to see every settler dead actually.” A day later, she explained, indicating that she considers every Israeli Jew to be a “settler.”
James Ray
As of June 2022, James Ray’s LinkedIn page said he worked as a “Social Media Marketing Specialist” at Sole Strategies since May 2021. Sole Strategies describes itself as an organization “dedicated to helping Democrats run and win their elections nationwide.”
Responding to Ganeles death, Ray expressed his support for the murder on Twitter, saying, “He deserved to die, and his memory will be a stain on the land.”
What was Ganeles’ crime in Ray’s opinion? “He made a conscious choice to join a genocidal occupation force as it continues a campaign of mass ethnic cleansing and set himself up in the West Bank on the front lines of the colonial endeavor he sought to uphold,” Ray tweeted.
His vile sentiments were not surprising, considering his avowed support of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a U.S.-designated terror group. On October 22, 2021, Ray tweeted: “PFLP is good actually we should all support and work with them.”
Ray often calls for the complete dismantlement of Israel as well as America. For example, on July 21, 2021, he tweeted, “...Zionism is the ideological threat, but the settler colony of Israel is the physical manifestation of the ideology and must be dismantled. We must combat Zionism, but this isn’t simply a battle of ideology.”
On September 5, 2021, he tweeted: “ ‘Are you pro-choice or pro-life’ I’m pro dismantling the U.S. settler empire.”
Aya Ghanameh
Aya Ghanameh is the founder and was the president of the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter at Rhode Island School of Design from August 2020 to June 2021.
After finding out about the murder of Ganeles, Ghanameh expressed her hatred for Zionists (who she conflates with white people), tweeting:
“white settler from connecticut moves halfway across the world to join the occupying military in palestine, and dies at the hands of the indigenous population fighting for liberation. he died for a racist ethnonationalist ideology. his memory will be anything but a blessing.”
It’s not the first time Ghanameh has conflated Jews with white people to express her hatred of them and deny the Jewish people’s connection to the land of Israel. On August 18, 2020, Ghanameh tweeted: “the z*onist argument that jews indigenous to palestine makes no sense lol [laughing out loud]. there are jews native to yemen, to bulgaria, and even to palestine but to say ALL jews are ‘indigenous’ to palestine is to racialize a religion that’s been multi-ethnic and cultural for a millennia.”
On the same day, she followed up this sentiment, tweeting: “y’all look stupid saying your white a** is native is palestine.”
Ghanameh is also not reticent about her calls for Israel’s destruction. On June 18, 2022, she tweeted, “...i will always stand by everything i’ve ever said. it’s not my fault if you’re on the wrong side of history. death to israel.”
Ghanameh’s tweet included screenshots of some of her other tweets, including one that said, “If a Zionist breathes near me today, I will destroy you.”
