Uahikea Maile
Uahikea Maile [David Uahikeaikalei'ohu Maile] expressed support for Hamas after the terror group committed war crimes against Israeli civilians, including mass murder, torture, rape, beheadings and kidnappings, on October 7, 2023.
Maile has also spread hatred of Israel and is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Uahikea Maile showed support for the pro-Hamas protest encampment at UofT in May 2024.
As of June 2024, Maile had served as the “founding Director of Ziibiing Lab” at UofT since October 2022, and was slated to be “on leave from July 1, 2024 until July 1, 2025.”
As of January 2024, Maile was listed as an assistant professor of Indigenous Politics in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto (U of T), St. George campus (UTSG), since 2019. U of T is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Maile graduated from the University of New Mexico with a PhD in American studies and a graduate certificate in women’s studies in 2019.
On October 7, 2023, Maile tweeted: “As Hawaiians wake up to the news of Palestinian anticolonial resistance in Gaza to Israeli settler colonialism, remember that—from Hawaiʻi to Palestine—occupation is a crime. A lāhui that stands for decolonization and deoccupation should also stand behind freedom for Palestine.”
On Saturday, October 7, 2023, approximately 2,900 heavily armed Hamas terrorists breached Israel’s border with Gaza. They executed numerous war crimes on civilians, including mass murder, beheadings of children, rape of men and women, torture, kidnappings and mutilation.
Hamas broadcast videos of their butchery on social media, often to victims’ accounts for families to see. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” As of November 10, 2023, approximately 1,200 Israelis, the vast majority of them civilians, were murdered during the attacks. Hamas kidnapped 242 Israelis, including at least 30 children. At least 3,500 people were wounded, many severely.
A terrorist detained by Israel admitted he raped an Israeli woman when he broke into a kibbutz house during the October 7, 2023 attack. In March 2024, a former hostage of Hamas publicly stated she was sexually abused and tortured while in captivity.
For more information on the October 7, 2023 terror attacks, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.
In October 2023, Maile signed and reportedly [00:03:00] co-authored [00:30:30] a pro-BDS statement titled: “Indigenous Solidarity With Palestine.” The statement said: “Colonized peoples have the right to defend themselves and to resist colonial violence. We support Palestinian liberation and their right as an oppressed people to resist colonialism and genocide.”
Anti-Israel activists use the term “resistance” to refer to violence and terror perpetrated against Israeli civilians and their allies. It is used to glorify and encourage anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence. Anti-Israel activists chant slogans such as: “Resistance by any means necessary!” and “Resistance is justified when people are occupied!” in response to terror attacks.
Maile’s statement further claimed that “Zionism is a form of racism and a colonial ideology.”
Maile’s statement was written “to demand freedom for political prisoners, and to support Land Back and the right of return for Palestinians. Stop the genocide. End the siege. End the occupation. Dismantle apartheid. Decolonize Palestine.”
The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel. International law mandates no absolute right of return and UN Resolution 194, which defined principles for “refugees wishing to return to their homes,” was unanimously rejected by Arab nations following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
Israel and Egypt implemented a UN-approved [pp. 39–41] joint blockade of the Gaza Strip in 2011 to stop Hamas from acquiring more sophisticated rockets. Hamas went around the blockade by smuggling weaponry through tunnels under the Philadelphi corridor separating Gaza from Egypt.
On November 2, 2023, Maile tweeted about Maile’s October 7th tweet celebrating Hamas’s October 7 attack. Maile wrote: “...Accusations. Harassment. Death threats. They won’t deter us. From the river to the sea Palestine and Hawaiʻi will be free.”
“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free” is a chant used [00:02:47] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state. In April 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning the chant as antisemitic.
On November 5, 2023, while speaking in an episode of The Red Nation podcast, Maile said regarding the October 7 attack [00:04:43]: “To see the breaking free of Gazans from the world’s largest open air prison containment site… was an expression and a movement and a feeling of jubilation for that kind of freedom and liberation to actually occur under an intense, brutal, murdersome Israeli military occupation.”
Maile then related October 7 to Hawaiians, saying [00:05:20]: “So in that jubilation I was very energized by… what might we learn from this liberation struggle and at the same time how might we stand in solidarity with Palestinians fighting for their freedom, for their liberation from that containment, from that occupation, from this system of apartheid and from an ongoing genocide.”
Maile also said [00:06:40] regarding Maile’s tweet from October 7th: “I do not regret what I said.”
On November 18, 2023, Maile published a blog post based on a speech Maile delivered at the American Studies Association (ASA) convention in Montreal on November 4, 2023 titled “Let Gaza Change You.”
Maile described the moment of “Seeing Palestinians escape on October 7, 2023 from…the world’s largest open-air prison in Gaza” by tearing down a part of the border fence “as an expression and feeling of jubilation… and an excited interest for what Kanaka Maoli might specifically learn from this liberation struggle and how we might stand in solidarity with Palestinians as they have with us.”
Maile concluded: “It’s hard to get free. When we see it peek through, even if momentarily, how can we not respond with anything less than our full hearts and minds, clear throats and voices, and entire souls in exuberant praise?”
On May 14, 2018, Maile tweeted: “Zionism kills. / Israel murders. / Military occupations brutalize. / Settler states genocide. / #FreePalestine.”
In May 2018, terror organization Hamas instigated the “March of Return.” Thousands of violent rioters attempted numerous breaches of Israel’s border fence with Gaza, seeking to harm Jews across the border. Media reports confirmed [00:00:20] protesters’ breaches and attempted breaches of the fence, some by armed Palestinians. On May 15, 2018, senior Hamas official Mahmoud Al-Zahhar admitted the Gaza protests were only a pretext of “peaceful resistance.”
On February 4, 2023, Maile tweeted a quote from an Intercept article about U.S. security training programs held in Israel: “‘[T]he exchanges refine and enhance the militarization rooted in American policing with Israeli tactics and technology of occupation and apartheid that are being tested on Palestinians on a daily basis.’ @jvplive.”
In 2017, anti-Israel group Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) launched the “Deadly Exchange (DX)” campaign, which accused American Jewish organizations of promoting human rights abuses. JVP also released a video that blamed [00:04:04] U.S.-based Jewish organizations for violence that occurs against Black and Brown communities, immigrants and activists in the U.S.
The accusation that Israeli law enforcement teaches American police brutal tactics during police exchange programs is used to demonize Israel. Participants in these programs have stated [00:02:14] that the training in Israel focuses [00:13:36] on public policy, counterterrorism and leadership training in the form of lectures and discussions.
Uahikea Maile showed support for the pro-Hamas protest encampment at UofT in May 2024, when he signed on to a statement put out by UofT community members. The May 20, 2024, statement was part of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
The statement backed all the encampment’s demands, including divesting from the alleged “apartheid policies of the state of Israel and its ongoing genocide in Gaza.”
To show support, Maile submitted a “support selfie,” where text beside Maile’s face said: “DISCLOSE. DIVEST. CUT TIES.”
On May 21, 2024 Maile tweeted the same photo and wrote: “I’ve joined 100+ faculty, alumni & honorary degree holders in solidarity with the students of @occupyuoft demanding that @UofT disclose, divest & cut ties with Israeli apartheid, occupation & genocide. If you’re interested in joining us, check out http://uoftdivest.ca.”
On May 2, 2024, UofT Occupy for Palestine (Occupy UofT) activists “stormed down” fencing around UofT’s Kings College Circle and set up a pro-Hamas and pro-BDS encampment called the “People’s Circle for Palestine.” Protesters chanted [00:02:59] for “intifada” and celebrated “resistance” [00:02:45]. Both terms are calls for terrorism. Activists chanted [00:01:28; 00:02:21] for Israel’s destruction multiple times.
After the October 7, 2023 massacre of nearly 1,200 Israelis, the inverted red triangle - 🔻- became a Hamas symbol. It appeared on large signs at the encampment and was featured in other encampment-related activism. Openly pro-Hamas marches began elsewhere in the city and ended at the encampment. In one incident, pro-Hamas activists punched a Jewish man, stole his Israeli flag and shouted anti-Semitic slurs.
Protesters occupied [00:00:17] the area from May to July 2024, despite UofT warning they were trespassing. On July 3, 2024, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice issued an injunction at UofT’s request, requiring the encampment to be cleared. Occupy UofT dismantled the encampment and wrote a statement that ended: “Long live the intifada.”
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by pro-terror activist Omar Barghouti in 2005 to turn “Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.” Barghouti has also called for Israel's destruction and the BDS movement demands would result in that same goal.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been infiltrating university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments propose resolutions to boycott or divestment from Israel or Israeli-affiliated entities. BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents and pro-terror activism on campus.
