Justifying Hamas Terrorism
On October 7, 2023, the day that Hamas massacred over 1,200 Israeli Jews, Joseph tweeted: “Postcolonial, anticolonial, and decolonial are not just words you heard in your EDI [Equity, Diversity, Inclusion] workshop.”Joseph retweeted an October 12, 2023 tweet with a statement by the University of Toronto’s Department of Historical and Cultural Studies that said it was “essential for scholars to situate the current war in its broad historical contexts, including those of settler colonialism… and global movements for Indigenous rights.” The statement said that “anti-colonial solidarity is not simply a legitimate ethical position, but a critical analytical perspective…”
Hamas intentionally targeted youth centers and elementary schools to execute and kidnap children. They also took stimulant drugs to give added energy to murder and maim. Nazis also took drugs during World War II to fuel their anti-Semitic massacres.
Hatred of Israel
On October 22, 2023, Joseph tweeted: “The idea that anyone who mentions colonialism, Palestine, human rights is an enemy, when genocide is advanced as self-defense, is a terrifying situation…”On November 14, 2023, Joseph co-wrote an op-ed in the Hamilton Spectator that said regarding Israel’s war against Hamas: “A war against civilians is not self-defence. It is a war crime that violates international humanitarian law…”
On December 12, 2023, Joseph tweeted referring to Israel’s Swords of Iron war against Hamas as “genocide.”
As of January 2024, Joseph was a signatory to a May 2021 manifesto titled “Palestine and Praxis: Scholars for Palestinian Freedom.” The manifesto referred to Israel as a “settler colonial state” that promotes policies that “constitute apartheid, bolstered by a brute force that enshrines territorial theft and the racial supremacy of Jewish-Zionist nationals.”
The manifesto also stated that signatories commit to advancing the manifesto's values in the “classroom and on campus” using practical measures. It also claimed that Palestinians are going through an “ongoing Nakba.”
The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.
The letter also committed signatories to “Pressuring our academic institutions and organizations to respect the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions of Israel by instating measures that remove complicity and partnership with military, academic, and legal institutions involved in entrenching Israel’s policies.”
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
