Yonah Lieberman

Overview

Yonah Lieberman is a founding member of IfNotNow (INN) who was arrested while protesting with INN. He has defended the Hamas terror organization, spread hatred of Israel, participated in an anti-Israel activist trip and expressed support for violent anti-Israel protesters.

Lieberman has also promoted anti-Israel agitators, demonized the Birthright Jewish heritage trip and protested against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

As of July 2019, Lieberman was an action coordinator and press release contact for INN.

As a national leader of INN, Lieberman either made the decision or was complicit in INN’s decision to partner with the anti-Semitic American Muslims for Palestine (AMP).

In 2015, 2016 and 2017, Lieberman was affiliated with Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ)

As of June 2025, Lieberman was listed as a trainer at Momentum since 2019.

On July 23, 2019, Lieberman tweeted in response to the release of his Canary Mission profile. He wrote: “I stand by every word I've written in every screenshot you have of my social…”

As of July 2019, Lieberman’s Facebook page said he “Studied History” at the University of Michigan (UMICH), from “2009 to 2013.”

Arrest

On April 20, 2016, Lieberman was one of 17 INN activists arrested for holding a “liberation seder”in the lobby [00:05:44] of the Manhattan building housing the offices of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL)

A Seder is a Jewish Passover ritual, that involves telling the story of the Israelites’ exodus from slavery in ancient Egypt and their travels to the Promised Land.

The activists occupied the lobby, demanding that the ADL and American Jewish leaders publicly oppose Israeli “occupation.”

INN uploaded resources for public use to their website and claimed that approximately 500 people participated in their liberation seders across the country.

Defending Hamas

On May 7, 2019, Lieberman tweeted about then-recent Hamas rocket attacks, where more than 450 rockets were launched from Gaza into Israel in less than 24 hours.

Lieberman wrote: “RE Why Rockets? It’s a nice story that Hamas randomly fires rockets because it hates Jews and just wants to kill as many as possible. And, while the rockets are horrifically designed to enact civilian causalities, Hamas has tried other tactics to win concessions and failed >>”

On October 23, 2014, Lieberman tweeted: “Hamas' tunnels have existed since 1990s: ‘If those were offensive tunnels, Hamas would have used them before the war.’”

Lieberman was quoting a claim made by Hamas leader, Khaled Mashaal, in a Vanity Fair interview, that was reported on by the Jerusalem Post.

In the same Vanity Fair interview, Mashaal claimed that 4,500 rockets fired by Hamas at Israeli civilian population centers were launched “under the right of self-defense.”

Hamas terror tunnels are intended for mass murders and hostage-taking scenarios against Israeli civiliansand soldiers. They stretch from the Gaza Strip into Israel.

On July 9, 2014, Lieberman tweeted: “Since start of #ProtectiveEdge #Hamas has fired 300 rockets and #Israel has bombed 600 sites in #Gaza. That is disproportionate.”

Israel commenced Operation Protective Edge (OPE) in July 2014, to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.

On December 29, 2011, Lieberman tweeted: “YUP! ‘Its Time to Reach Out To Hamas.’ … forward.com/articles/14867… #Gaza #Israel #Dialogue #ItsNotTheColdWarAnymore.”

Hatred of Israel

On June 12, 205, Lieberman posted on X: “Israel is a rogue state. Every day it’s leaders take turns coming up with new ideas to wreak even more devastation than the day before.” Lieberman shared the post during the ongoing Israel-Iran war.

On November 26, 2024, during Israel’s war against Hamas terrorists, Lieberman posted on X: “Israel is a rogue state and has been for decades…”

On October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis, kidnapped hundreds and wounded thousands. War crimes included mass rape and torture. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” For more information, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.

On November 6, 2024, Lieberman posted on X, referring to the results of the 2024 U.S. presidential election: “One of the great, great horrors of this historic moment is the way that the Israeli government continued its genocidal assault on Gaza to hurt Biden/Dems politically. Hard to imagine a worse action than killing thousands of civilians just to help a political ally win an election.”

On April 14, 2024, Lieberman tweeted: “So much focus on the hundreds of drones/missiles from Iran on Israel. 99% were intercepted by an international coalition. Reports so far say one Israeli casualty. In that time, Israeli missiles, provided by the US, extinguished 43 lives and forever changed another 62.”

On April 14, 2024, Iran fired “Over 350 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, armed drones and rockets” toward Israel in an unprecedented attack. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and several international partners intercepted 99% of the projectiles. The IDF named the operation Iron Shield. The missile attack took place during Israel’s war against Hamas terrorists.

Iranian media claimed the attack was in retaliation for an alleged Israeli strike on an Iranian consular building in Damascus, Syria, earlier that month. The Damascus attack killed several members of designated terrorist organization Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including a senior commander and a brigadier general.

Also on April 14, 2024, Lieberman tweeted: “A reminder that Israel's attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus two weeks ago was a calculated action to draw an Iranian military response, forcing the US to step in on Israel's side in a regional war.”

On April 13, 2024, Lieberman tweeted: “There is only one country indiscriminately dropping 2,000 pound bombs on civilian centers in the Middle East. And it’s not Iran.”

Lieberman’s tweet was in response to an April 13, 2024 tweet from AIPAC that said: “Iran is the principal obstacle to peace and stability in the Middle East.”

Also on April 13, 2024, Lieberman tweeted: “If you had called for a ceasefire and used American leverage to force Israel to end its war months ago, than Israel would not have been emboldened to assassinate the Iranian general two weeks ago, and Iran would not feel pressure to respond. Instead you kept giving Israel bombs.”

Lieberman was responding to a tweet on the same day from US president Joe Biden that said: “...Our commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad.”

Activist Trip to Israel

On May 24, 2017, Lieberman took part in a disruption blocking the entrance to the Damascus Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem in Israel, during the Jerusalem Day parade. INN co-organized the disruption, along with Free Jerusalem and All That’s Left.

“All That’s Left”(ATL) is an “Anti Occupation Collective” that is “committed to building the diaspora angle of resistance,” based in Jerusalem. The group stages actions, protests and disruptions around Israel to protest Israeli policy and have partnered with anti-Israel groups like IfNotNow (INN) and Youth Against Settlements (YAS).

Lieberman and other INN activists blocked the entrance to the Damascus Gate and refused [00:11:40] orders to leave. When the Israeli police physically removed the protestors individually, the protestors re-linked arms, before being physically removed again.

On May 25, 2017, Lieberman appeared in a photo from the disruption, showing him being dragged away by police.

On June 30, 2017, Lieberman was featured in a Facebook video about the Jerusalem Day demonstration, where he said [00:00:32]: “So if you scratch beneath the surface, you understand how actually nationalistic and violent the day itself is.”

Also in May 2017, Lieberman participatedin a delegation, which was known as the "Justice Justice You Shall Pursue,” to Israel, comprised of INN and Center for Jewish Nonviolence (CJN) activists.

CJNV says its partners with anti-Israel groups including Breaking the Silence (BtS) and Youth Against Settlements (YAS)

During the trip, activists reportedly clashed with Israeli security personnel during a protest

A May 19, 2017, 972mag article showed that the delegation met withIssa Amro, the head of the Youth Against Settlements (YAS) movement, who is known for vandalism and attacking Israeli soldiers in Hebron. Amro has been charged with numerous acts of violence against Israeli civilians and security forces.

Lieberman wrote on his gofundme fundraising page for the trip: “In one week, I will join nearly 200 Jews from all over the world in Israel/Palestine for 10 days of resisting the Occupation with the Center for Jewish Nonviolence. The trip happens just weeks before the 50th anniversary of the Occupation. It will be a serious demonstration of #JewishResistance.”

Lieberman also noted on his gofundme page that participants on the trip “come from groups and organizations,” including INN, Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and JFREJ.

Lieberman raised $961 toward the cost of the trip.

The trip and its activities were scheduled to coincide with Israel’s 50th Jerusalem Day celebrations, marking the city’s unification after the 1967 war.

Lieberman wrote on his gofundme page that “our Palestinian partners have requested that we join them on the ground earlier since Ramadan falls in June 2017. Furthermore, being on the ground early will allow us to set the tone of the news cycle in the lead-up to 50 years and enable us to launch follow-up activism around the world in June.”

Supporting Violent Protesters

On May 20, 2018, Lieberman tweeted: “Hey @TheBeaconSch, as a young American Jew, I wanted to say thank you for taking the time to mourn the 60 Palestinians in Gaza killed by Israeli forces on Monday.”

On March 30, 2018, some 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza approached Israel’s border to take part in “Land Day Protests” or the “March of Return.” The violent demonstrations were instigated by Hamas on the Israeli-Gaza border. Participants declared their intention to harm Jews across the border under the pretext of “peaceful resistance.”

March participants sent scores of kites bearing explosive devices across Israel’s border to burn Israeli crops and homes. Rioters also made numerous attempts to breach Israel’s border fence, which caused the Israeli Defense Forces to respond with live fire.

Agitators also threw Molotov cocktails, firebombs, shot firearms and threw rocks under the cover of smoke from burning tires.

On May 18, 2018, Lieberman tweeted: “@bungarsargon, can you point me to legitimate proof that ‘the majority of the dead [Note: I would say 'killed'] in Gaza were Hamas’? That number, for the record, would have to be more than 56. And what do you say about the 12,000+ injured Palestinians? That 6,001 were Hamas?”

On May 16, 2018, a Hamas senior official, Salah al-Bardawil, stated that 50 out of 62 protesters killed during the May 14 Gaza border protest were Hamas operatives. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) also claimed that three of its members were killed at the same protest.

On May 16, 2018, Lieberman tweeted during the March of Return riots: “I *cannot stand* the narrative that ‘Israel is losing the PR war’. Israel is not losing a PR war. Israel is killing people. Palestinians are losing their lives. Turning the conversation into one about PR furthers the lie that Palestinians acting for their freedom are Hamas pawns.”

On April 4, 2018, Lieberman tweeted: “We're saying Mourners Kaddish for the 17 Palestinians killed by Israeli live fire less than one week ago. The Jewish Defense League, disgustingly, chanting ‘17 more! 17 more!’ #EnoughOccupation.”

Lieberman’s tweet featured a video of INN activists reciting the Mourner’s Kaddish prayer for the dead.

The Jewish ritual of the Mourner’s Kaddish is a prayer customarily reserved for close relatives or Jews murdered for being Jews.

On April 1, 2018, Lieberman tweeted during another INN protest in support of the March of Return: “Blaming Hamas for indiscriminate Israeli live fire against 773 Gazans marching non-violently against the Israeli blockade on the eve of Passover — the Jewish holiday of liberation — is the most extreme form of American Jewish cognitive dissonance I've seen in a very long time.”

Media reports confirmed [00:00:20] the March of Return protesters’ breaches and attempted breaches of Israel’s border fence, some by armed Palestinians. One Hamas leader declared [00:00:30]: “We will take down the border [with Israel] and we will tear out their hearts from their bodies.”

Most of the Gazans who died between March 30 and April 6, 2018, were identified as terror operatives who were killed while carrying out terrorist attacks, rioting against IDF forces or attempting to breach the border fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip.

Promoting Anti-Israel Agitators

On February 19, 2018, Lieberman tweeted: “I — and thousands of young American Jews — have your back @SarahKSilverman. #FreeAhed #WeWillBeTheGeneration #IfNotNow.” His tweet was in response to an article titled: “‘Pimping For Terrorists’ - Sarah Silverman Slammed After Calling for Palestinian Teen Ahed Tamimi’s Release”

Ahed Tamimi has a long history of physically attacking Israeli soldiers. Tamimi is the daughter of Bassem Tamimi, who is known for exploiting young children as political props in staged confrontations with Israeli soldiers.

On December 19, 2017, Lieberman tweeted in response to a tweet by former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, that read: “The Tamimi family—which may not be a real family—dresses up kids in American clothes and pays them to provoke IDF troops on camera. This cynical and cruel use of children constitutes abuse. Human rights organizations must investigate!...”

Lieberman tweeted: “Michael Oren--who may not be a realdoctor--makes up disgusting myths about Palestinian children protesting the Occupation because he would rather lie than grapple with the fact that he's supported 50 years of human rights abuses toward millions of Palestinians.”

The village of Nabi Saleh is a Tamimi family stronghold. It is notorious as a place where photographers gather nearly every Friday to document scenes of Palestinian residents and international activists clashing with Israeli soldiers. Much of this is instigated by the Nabi Saleh Tamimi clan.

Demonizing Birthright

On June 27, 2018, Lieberman was listed as the press contact for the release of INN’s #NotJustAFreeTrip campaign. The campaign aimed to pressure “BIRTHRIGHT TO TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT THE ISRAELI OCCUPATION TO ITS 40,000 YOUNG JEWISH PARTICIPANTS THIS SUMMER.”

Birthright Israel is a heritage trip to Israel for Jewish young adults from across the world.

On June 29, 2018, Lieberman tweeted: “I’m #BlockedByBirthright, simply for asking the most well funded program for young American Jews to connect to their identity to tell the truth. Mass blocking twitter accounts for asking questions...not something you’d do if you actually welcome open dialogue. #NotJustAFreeTrip.”

Lieberman previously indicated in 2013 on Facebook that he was a former Birthright Israel staff member.

Protesting AIPAC

On March 26, 2017, Liberman reportedly participated in an INN protest outside the Washington D.C. venue of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) Policy Conference. Protestors chained themselves to the entrance of the conference center. Several hundred protesters also marched and chanted for hours outside the venue.

The stated mission of AIPAC is to “strengthen, protect and promote the U.S.-Israel relationship in ways that enhance the security of the United States and Israel.”

Four INN activists purchased tickets to the conference as AIPAC delegates, in order to gain access to the building. Once inside, the INN activists dropped [00:00:37] banners from the center’s third floor, stating that they “reject AIPAC and the occupation,” before being removed by security.

In a Huffington Post article, Lieberman promoted INN’s March 2017 protest against AIPAC.

Lieberman indicated on Facebook that he “went” to an INN-organized training event the following day, on March 27, 2017 in Washington D.C, titled: “ResistAIPAC Anti-Islamophobia Training.”

The training event’s Facebook page promised to “continue the theme of the day with an action” that focused on the ways “AIPAC supports Islamophobia.”

The INN organizers wrote they were “excited to be joined by” Ramah Kudaimi, the Director of Programs and Operations for U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR), a coalition of American-based anti-Israel organizations, which lobbies the U.S. Congress to adopt anti-Israel policies and to end support for Israel.

INN reported that the event was attended by “55 IfNotNow members from Washington D.C, Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City.”

They also reported that the training session looked at “messages of Islamophobia” and “focused on the ways the Jewish institutions in which many of us grew-up teach and propagate these messages.”

INN then listened to Herzallah go into “greater detail about various Jewish institutions that perpetuate Islamophobia support the occupation.”

The training event was followed by a protest outside of AIPAC's Conference at the Mt. Vernon Convention Center that evening to focus “on the ways AIPAC supports Islamophobia.”

At the protest, INN organizer Jill Raney said that the training earlier that day taught [00:22:10] her how Islamophobia is closely tied to the “American support for the Occupation.”

During the protest, one leader claimed [00:30:18] that AIPAC is “Islamophobic” and “peddles Islamophobia.” Another INN speaker took the bullhorn to explain  [00:09:04] that he came out to “make sure that we continue to resist the awful influence that AIPAC has on the Jewish community and our country as a whole.”

INN Activity

Lieberman was one of several INN activists to participate in the online “You Never Told Me” campaign calling on Jewish educational organizations and institutions to include information about “the occupation” in their teachings about Israel.

The “You Never Told Me” campaign featured INN members providing testimonials about their Israel-related educational experiences with different Jewish organizations, including United Synagogue Youth (USY), Camp Ramah, the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) and the Solomon Schechter Day School Network.

On November 7, 2017, Lieberman tweeted: “Ramah alumni are about to lead a Speak Out and Teach In in front of @NationalRamah HQ. #YouNeverToldMe #RamahNeverToldMe.”

The tweet featured a photo of 20 protesters who held a rally outside the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) “to demand that the Conservative movement’s Camp Ramah start talking about the Israeli occupation.”

It was reported that an email from an INN activist to the head of Ramah camps, Rabbi Mitchell Cohen, read: “We demand that Ramah programs start telling the truth: Include the Israeli occupation in your Israel programming.”

Camp Ramah’s Director, Rabbi Mitchell Cohen told to INN, after meeting with INN members, that Ramah would not partner with the group.

INN shared on Facebook an image of a copy of Rabbi Cohen’s response and wrote: “Today the National Ramah Commission (NRC) emailed this statement...the NRC and its Director, Rabbi Mitch Cohen imply that our effort — by 15 Ramah alumni (who are members of IfNotNow) to ensure that Ramah community learns about the Occupation...is anti-Semitic.”

The email reportedly said: “Ramah camps have not engaged — and will not engage — in any way with If Not Now as an organization...we made it very clear to them….we do not allow any anti-Israel, anti-Semitic or anti-Zionist education at Ramah.”

In a statement on June 6, 2018, the NRC said: “a wide variety of positions supporting Israel can be voiced and discussed. We do not, however, permit the sharing of anti-Israel educational messages at camp.”

On January 28, 2016, Lieberman joined INN activists in their “First Action of 2016” at a demonstration against American “Jewish Federations.” One activist held a sign that read: “JEWISH FEDERATIONS. YOUNG JEWS WANT TO KNOW WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON?”

IfNotNow (INN)

IfNotNow (INN) is an anti-Israel organization founded in 2014, in response to Israel’s Operation Protective Edge (OPE) against Hamas.

INN claims to be “young Jews angered by the overwhelmingly hawkish response of American Jewish institutions” to OPE. INN presents three demands on its website: “Stop the War on Gaza, End the Occupation, and Freedom and Dignity for All.”

INN defines “the Occupation as the military rule over Palestinians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza,” which is land Israel has controlled for nearly 50 years since the 1967 Six-Day War. However, INN leaders have made [00:34:32] the claim [00:13:49] at protests that the occupation is 70 years long, referring to Israel’s founding in 1948.

INN actions have aimed to demonize [00:38:13] Israel, harass [00:05:44] mainstream American Jewish organizations like the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and decrease support for Israel among American Jews.

INN has used “public action and imaginative ritual” to achieve its goals, including disruptions where activists were arrested.

One of the high-profile arrests occurred at a May 2018 disruption at a U.S. Senator’s office in Washington, D.C. to protest legislation against the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

At the same incident, INN used [00:07:17] the Jewish ritual of the Mourner’s Kaddish prayer to mourn [00:09:10] protesters who were killed during the Hamas-organized and funded Great March of Return riots on the Israel-Gaza border.

INN activists have also staged and promoted walk-offs from Birthright Israel trips, a heritage trip to Israel for young Jewish adults from across the world.

INN claims to take no position on the BDS movement and that it is “open to any who seek to shift the American Jewish public away from the status quo that upholds the Occupation.” However, INN organizes with pro-BDS, anti-Israel organizations including American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP).
