Yara Jouzy

Overview

Yara Jouzy has expressed support for terrorists, demonized Israel and promoted the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Jouzy is a student at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD), where she is affiliated with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).

As of August 2018, Jouzy’s LinkedIn page said she is slated to graduate from UMD in 2018, with a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Advertising and Applied Communication. She is also an Arabic Student Teacher at UMD and the recruitment chair of the Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity, Inc.

On July 5th 2018, Jouzy’s changed her Facebook profile picture to a photo of herself with her graduation cap.

As of the same date, Jouzy’s WayUp profile said that she was contributing writer to Arab America and an active member of the Public Relations Students Society of America.

Supporting Terrorists

On April 17, 2017, Jouzy wrote an article for Arab America in which she expressed support for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jail on hunger strike, many of whom were convicted terrorists. She described strike leader Marwan Barghouti as being in the middle of “serving a life sentence due to his participation in the second Palestinian intifada.”

Terrorist Marwan Barghouti was sentenced to five consecutive life terms for some of his crimes, including his role in the Sbarro Cafe bombing. In 2017, he initiated the hunger strike by Palestinian prisoners known as the “Dignity Strike.” He headed the Palestinian Authority (PA) terrorist Tanzim force and founded the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, which carried out many terror attacks against Israeli civilians.

Jouzy’s article included a cartoon depicting terrorist Khader Adnan.

Khader Adnan was a senior member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist organization. A 2007 YouTube video showed Adnan praising and encouraging suicide bombings: "Who among you will carry the next explosive belt? Who among you will fire the next bullets? Who among you will have his body parts blown all over?” In May 2023, Adnan died in prison after refusing medical treatment during a hunger strike.

Demonizing Israel

On May 15, 2017, Jouzy tweeted: "It was the day of the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people so that the state of Israel can be established. #Nakba69 #NakbaDay."

On May 2, 2017, Jouzy updated her Facebook cover photo to one feature an SJP UMD display that promoted BDS and portrayed Israel’s security barrier as the “Israeli Apartheid Wall.”

On March 15, 2017, Jouzy tweeted: “It's about time #Apartheid #Palestine.” She linked to an article about a report from a discredited United Nations official that claimed Israel established an “apartheid regime.”

In March 2017, a UN commission composed of 18 Arab states produced a report claiming Israel established an “apartheid regime.” Anti-Israel professor Richard Falk co-authored the report. Soon after the report’s release, UN Secretary General Antonió Guterres ordered it withdrawn, claiming the report was published without consultation with Guterres’s office and it did not reflect the UN secretariat’s views.

On February 17, 2017, Jouzy wrote an article for Arab America, in which she referred to Israel’s security barrier as an “apartheid Wall.” The article also claimed that the Palestinian “right of return” is “guaranteed by many UN resolutions.”

The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

On April 29, 2015, Jouzy was featured in a photo tweeted by anti-Israel propagandist Abbas Hamideh, who wrote: “I Had an amazing #Nakba presentation last night at University of Maryland hosted by #SJP. Thank you! #Palestine.”

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
