Timothy O'Shea

Overview

Timothy O’Shea has denied Israel’s right to exist, spread an anti-Israel conspiracy theory, expressed support for the violent March of Return and spread demonization of Israel on Twitter.

O’Shea co-authored a Boycott Divestment Sanction (BDS) resolution at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). He was also affiliated with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and attended the 2018 National SJP Conference.

The 2018 National SJP conference was held on November 16-18, 2018 at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The conference was themed “Radical Hope: Resistance in the Face of Adversity.” The conference website stated: “[t]he reason we can have hope is that Zionism...can be destroyed.”

In 2018, O’Shea was the Treasurer of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Executive Committee at CWRU and was an activist with CWRU’s Radical Student Union.

As of March 6, 2019, O’Shea said on LinkedIn that he was a Political Science undergraduate student at CWRU, slated to graduate in 2020.

O’Shea also stated on his LinkedIn that he was a Research Assistant at CWRU’s Political Science department since August 2018, as well as a debate team Judge at the Hawken School in Cleveland, OH since October, 2016.

Denying Israel’s Right to Exist

On September 8, 2018, O’Shea tweeted: “Watch this video and tell me Israel still deserves to exist. The entire State was formed on murder and ethnic cleansing, and that violence continues today.”

On November 19, 2018, O’Shea retweeted a November 30, 2018 tweet that replied “Spoiler alert: No.” to the question: “Does Israel Have a Right to Exist as a Jewish State?”

Spreading an Anti-Israel Conspiracy Theory

On February 20, 2019, O’Shea tweeted: “Israel is a fascist state.” O’Shea’s tweet embedded another tweet that said: “Israel is giving large pharmaceutical firms ‘permission’ to carry out Nazi-style experimental drug tests on unwitting Palestinian prisoners.”

Supporting the Violent March of Return

On March 31, 2018, O’Shea tweeted: “‘...protesters rushing forward throwing stones & burning tires. Israeli troops responded w/ live fire & rubber-coated steel pellets while drones dropped tear gas from above’ I hope those Israeli troops weren't frightened!!”

On March 30, 2018, some 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza approached Israel’s border to take part in “Land Day Protests,” or the “March of Return.” The march was organized and funded by Hamas as a campaign of violent protests to spotlight the Palestinian demand to “return” to Israel. The “right of return” has since been discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

March participants sent scores of kites bearing explosive devices across Israel’s border to burn Israeli crops and homes. Participants also attempted to breach the border fence, which caused the Israeli Defense Forces to respond with live fire. Agitators also threw Molotov cocktails and firebombs, shot firearms and threw rocks.

On March 31, 2018, O’Shea also tweeted: “The Israeli talking point, ‘we need think about our own national security,’ is nothing but a farce to continue the occupation. The intermittent violence against Israel is a response to the constant and disproportionate violence Palestinians face every single day.”

On June 18, 2018, O’Sheah tweeted: “Literally f**k you” in response to an IDF tweet that said: “Moments ago, an IDF aircraft targeted infrastructure belonging to the Hamas terror organization in the southern Gaza Strip after a group of terrorists launched arson balloons into Israeli territory.”

Since the start of the 2018 violent March of Return protests, Palestinians have launched balloons armed with incendiary devices into Israel.

O’Shea retweeted a July 20, 2018 tweet from the anti-Israel group Jewish Voice for Peace that said: “Israel has launched a massive military assault on Gaza - the worst since 2014. This comes after months of successful and internationally supported Palestinian protests in the Great Return March.”

Media reports confirmed [00:00:20] the March of Return protesters’ breaches and attempted breaches of Israel’s border fence, some by armed Palestinians. One Hamas leader declared [00:00:30]: “We will take down the border [with Israel] and we will tear out their hearts from their bodies.”

O’Shea also retweeted a September 30, 2018 tweet that said: “Yesterday the Zionists, terrorists shot & killed 6 Palestinians in Gaza. With no end in sight to help the #Palestinians who are protesting.”

Demonizing Israel

On January 20, 2019, O’Shea tweeted: “Feminism that is ok with the imprisonment and murder Palestinian Women as well as the annexation of Palestinian land - is not feminism at all.”

O’Shea’s tweet also embedded a tweet by SJP at Ohio State University (OSU) that said: “A Zionist network aims to fracture the Women's March by establishing an alternative movement, but rather than centering women, they center Israel.”

On January 24, 2019, O’Shea tweeted: “‘The depiction of Zionism as colonialism, the analysis of Israel as an apartheid state, & the recognition of... ethnic cleansing... in Israel is the source of three key entries... shaping our view of the future: decolonization, regime change, & a one-state solution’ (Pappé 32).”

On December 4, 2018, O’Shea tweeted: “Anti-semitism is fascism Anti-Immigration is fascism Zionism is fascism.”

O’Shea retweeted a November 13, 2018 tweet that said: “Israel has made Gaza unlivable. It’s a cage and weapons testing site for nearly 2 million ppl who Israel surrounds with American-financed weapons and electrified fences for the crime of being Palestinian. Remember that.”

O’Shea retweeted an October 23, 2018 tweet that said: “#Apartheid = Crime Against Humanity. It was wrong in South Africa then, it's wrong in #Palestine today.”

On October 3, 2018, O’Shea tweeted: “F**k ...the racists that support murder and the ethnic cleansing of Palestine.”

On September 8, 2018, O’Shea tweeted: “Someday those that actively support the occupation or suppress opposition will be held responsible. I can't wait for that day to come and I hope you suffer more than all the lives you've destroyed combined when it does.”

On August 16, 2018, O’Shea tweeted: “Except that @CoryBooker supports ‘Israel's right to defend itself’ which is just a line of propaganda attempting to justify Israeli colonialism and use of extreme/disproportionate violence against Palestine..”

On May 29, 2018, O’Shea tweeted: “@ people who say that Israel hasn't occupied Gaza since 2006 and conveniently forget about the air, land, and sea blockade that makes Gaza the world's largest open-air prison.”

On March 28, 2018, O’Shea tweeted: “And the attack on academic freedom also occurs on college campuses around the world, especially in the US, in which pro-occupation groups stifle and suppress student dissent against Israeli policy.”

Defending An Anti-Israel Agitator

On March 2, 2019, O’Shea tweeted: “Yeah. She's correct. The last thing Israel and the Israel lobby want is a conversation. They'd rather talk about anything else.”

O’Shea’s tweet embedded a New York Times tweet that said: “Representative Ilhan Omar came under scrutiny again this week because of her comments about Israel. She says her critics are trying to shut down legitimate debate.”

Ilhan Omar was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018. In February 2019, top Congressional leaders denounced Omar for tweeting anti-Semitic remarks.Omar has demonized Israel and endorsed BDS. In July 2019, Omar introduced a pro-BDS resolution in the U.S. Congress, which she described as “an opportunity for us to explain why it is we support…the BDS movement.”

Supporting BDS

O’Shea retweeted a February 8, 2019 tweet that said: “...Israel celebrated its Eurovision win on the streets of Tel Aviv...No glitzy prize can cover-up brutal occupation and apartheid. #BoycottEurovision2019 @PACBI @BDSmovement.”

In March 2018, O’Shea co-authored a BDS divestment resolution to be presented to the University Student Government (USG) at CWRU, on April 3, 2018, during the Jewish holiday of Passover.

The proposed student government bill, Resolution 27-04, called on the university to “fully divest its assets from Israel’s illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories.”

On March 25, 2018, O’Shea tweeted: “As of this afternoon, I'm excited to announce the launch of my initiative calling on @cwru to divest from the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories - you can find the resolution, and other information at http://goo.gl/RrNc9V “

In the same Twitter thread, O’Shea added: “I hope to start a conversation on our campus about the role the University should play in ending this oppressive military occupation and eventually add our institution's voice to the calls for the end of Israeli apartheid.”

On April 3, 2018, the resolution was tabled indefinitely during the USG’s General Assembly (GA) meeting after opposition arose among the USG and the student body.

On April 6, 2018, O’Shea authored an opinion piece in CWRU’s student newspaper, The Observer, titled: “USG needs to allow a conversation on the occupation of Palestine.”

In the piece, O’Shea condemned USG GA for tabling the resolution and called on CWRU’s undergraduate student body to have a  “real conversation about the occupation and how we directly contribute to its continuation with investments in multinational companies that profit off of Palestinian oppression.”

SJP Activism

On March 4, 2019, O’Shea tweeted: “@SJPuwMadison @zahiahammad @Lieutenant_Liz I'll see y'all at UM Dearborn on March 29th-30th for the 2019 Midwest SJP Conference right?? #midwestsjp2019.”

O’Shea also embedded a tweet from the Midwest SJP Twitter account promoting their 2019 Conference and linked their GoFundMe page.

The GoFundMe page for the Midwest SJP 2019 Conference explained that the conference “will evaluate material links” between “the Israeli occupation of Palestine to colonial violence around the world.”

Attending the 2018 National SJP Conference

On November 2, 2018, O’Shea created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for six delegates from the Radical Student Union (RSU) at CWRU to attend the 2018 National SJP Conference, and shared his fundraiser on Twitter.

On that same day, RSU CWRU shared O’Sheas Gofundme page on Facebook and said: “Please consider donating to help us send RSU representatives to the NSJP conference in LA!!”.

On November 16, 2018, O’Shea posed for a photo with fellow 2018 National SJP attendee Andrew Thompson. Thompson shared the photo on Facebook and said: “had the most amazing weekend in los angeles learning about palestine and zionist settler colonialism with 500+ of the most inspiring students in the country. long live palestine!”

On November 18, 2019, O’Shea tweeted: “Zionist protestors at the #NSJP conference are racists who support the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, the genocide of Palestinians, and the illegitimate Apartheid state of Israel. #NSJP2018 #BDS.”

On November 19, 2018, O’Shea tweeted: “I had an amazing time at my 1st NSJP conference! It was so inspiring to meet other students who are committed to justice in Palestine & to hear from activists who have been fighting for that justice for decades. The colonial state imposed on Palestinian land must come to an end.”

As of March 2019, O’Shea pinned the tweet to the top of his Twitter account.

2018 National SJP - Celebrating Violence

During the 2018 National SJP conference, anti-Israel activist Mohammed Nabulsi led the attendees in the chant [00:00:52] “Long Live the Intifada! Intifada! Intifada!”

Since the early 2000’s, the term “intifada” has carried the connotation of violence. The second intifada was characterized by more than 120 suicide bombings targeting Israeli civilians on buses and in cafes.

Anti-Israel activist Omar Zahzah also reportedly [00:00:07] led National SJP attendees in chanting, in Arabic, “With our bodies and our blood, we will free Palestine.”

As of November 2018, the 2018 National SJP website glorified “radical hope and upfront defiance of Zionism,” citing as examples the “early revolts through the Intifadas to the Great Return March.”

The Great Return March of 2018 was organized and funded by the terror group Hamas as a campaign of violent protests along Israel’s border to spotlight the demand of Palestinians to “return” to Israel.

Tens of thousands of rioters gathered on Israel’s Gaza border, attempting numerous breaches of Israel’s border fence, with leaders andparticipants declaring their intention to harm Jews.

National SJP originally promoted a conference logo featuring a keffiyeh-wearing bear, looking toward a kite bearing the colors of the Palestinian flag.

On October 27, 2018, National SJP said the kite signified “the power in the Gaza March of Return.”

Since March 2018, March of Return participants and Hamas’s “Kite Unit” have sent hundreds of kites bearing incendiary devices and IEDs (improvised explosive devices) across the border into Israel to terrorize Israelis. The kites are often marked with swastikas.

By the time National SJP produced its 2018 conference logo highlighting the kites in October 2018, Gazan terror kites and balloons had ignited more than 1,300 fires in Israel, over seven months.

2018 National SJP - Undermining U.S. Support for Israel

On November 18, 2018, the US Palestine Community Network (USPCN) posted on Facebook the 2018 National SJP keynote speech by Hatem Abudayyeh, USPCN’s co-founder

Abudayyeh has supported [00:08:45] convicted terrorists, praised terror organizations, called for Israel’s destruction and is an activist in theBoycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In his 2018 National SJP Keynote, Abudayyeh said [00:53:01] that the “specific role” of Palestinian and Arab students was to organize [00:53:42] in order to weaken “Zionist Israel” and force [00:54:23] the U.S. to “no longer provide it with diplomatic, political, financial and military cover and support.”

Abudayyeh predicted [00:55:37] that once U.S. support to Israel ends, National SJP attendees would return to Palestine as “conquering heroes,” end [00:54:38] the “occupation and colonization of all Arab lands including the Golan Heights” and replace “Zionist Israel” with a Palestinian state.

2018 National SJP - Whitewashing Terror Organizations

During his keynote speech, Abudayyeh also painted [00:14:01] terrorist organizations as “liberation movements” and “resistance organizations,” stating [00:14:21] “what we also know is that the majority of the resistance organizations in Palestine are on the U.S. state department list of foreign terrorist organizations.”

Abudayyeh also celebrated [00:52:00] that all of the “armed resistance” organizations in Gaza are part [00:52:14] of a “unified resistance in Gaza, that includes all of the resistance organizations, working together under a unified military command.”

2018 National SJP - Defending Terrorist Rasmea Odeh

During his keynote speech, Abudayyeh claimed [00:08:28] that pro-Israel organizations “go after students like you,” adding [00:08:20] “just like they went after my friend and colleague, Rasmea Odeh.”

Odeh was a key military operative with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorist organization. In 1969, she masterminded a PFLP supermarket bombing that killed two college students. She also attempted to bomb the British consulate in Jerusalem. Odeh later moved to the United States but was deported to Jordan in 2017 for immigration fraud.

Abudayyeh added that he was asked [00:08:45] to talk about Odeh’s case, and praised SJP and SDS students who organized [00:09:15] “absolutely valuable” events on behalf [00:9:11] of Odeh, “as she was fighting to stay in the U.S.”

2018 National SJP - Demonizing Israel and Jews

During his keynote speech, Abudayyeh defended [00:27:25] the “Irvine 11” — eleven Muslim Student Union (MSA)   members who were arrested in 2010 for repeatedly shouting down former Israeli ambassador Michael Oren during an address at the University of California at Irvine (UC Irvine).

Abudayyeh referred [00:27:37] to Oren as a “racist fascist speaker, representative of a racist, fascist country.”

Abudayyeh went on to claim [00:29:48] that “today, even in the United States, Israel is finally being seen as the criminal, apartheid, racist state that it is.”

Abudayyeh also called for increased action in the face of President U.S. Donald Trump, and referred [00:48:41] to Jared Kushner, Trump’s Jewish son-in-law and senior advisor, as “that pig son-in-law of his.”

2018 National SJP - Excluding Students

The 2018 National SJP Conference welcomed only students who were verified and vouched for by an SJP (or otherwise named campus Palestine solidarity group). Media requests needed to be “approved by the NSJP press team” prior to the conference.

A November 7, 2018 Columbus Jewish News article reported that the Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed a resolution calling on UCLA to cancel the 2018 NSJP conference, stating that a “public university should not allow any group to implement a litmus test for event participation on their campus.”

On November 12, 2018, UCLA Chancellor Gene Block published an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times that criticized National SJP’s exclusion of members of pro-Israel student groups.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
