The incident occurred at the Indigo bookstore in Toronto during Israel’s war against Hamas. Israel launched the war after the October 7, 2023, terror attacks. In November 2023, during Israel's war against the Hamas terror group, 11 anti-Israel agitators were arrested after vandalizing a branch of the Indigo bookstore in Toronto, Ontario. Agitators defaced the building with red paint and plastered posters accusing Indigo's Jewish founder and pro-Israel philanthropist, Heather Reisman, of "funding genocide."
Police charged the suspects with "hate-motivated mischief," "conspiracy to commit an indictable offense" and "criminal harassment," reporting that they “engaged in threatening conduct that caused a person to reasonably fear for their personal safety.”
Indigo Books & Music is a chain with branches across Canada.
On October 6, 2024, Khan posted on Facebook: "...Since the Hamas attack (or resistance however you see it) - there has been a resurgence of study and thought around the colonizer and the colonized - who is seen as the civilized and who is seen as the savage. And how the actions of the colonizer - not matter how brutal - are seen as justified. This piece invokes...a campaign to civilize barbarism. You can only think of Palestine when looking at this piece."
Anti-Israel activists use the term “resistance” to refer to violence and terror perpetrated against Israeli civilians and their allies. It is used to glorify and encourage anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence. Anti-Israel activists chant slogans such as: “Resistance by any means necessary!” and “Resistance is justified when people are occupied!” in response to terror attacks.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis, kidnapped hundreds and wounded thousands. War crimes included mass rape and torture. Many Palestinian civilians participated in and supported the attacks, and Gazans working in the targeted Israeli communities gave intelligence to Hamas on where to strike.

On August 1, 2023, Khan set her Facebook profile picture to a photo of herself posing in front of a graphic by Carlos Latuff painted on a building, showing two arms in sleeves of the Irish and Palestinian flags holding a Molotov cocktail. Text painted on the building read: "IRELAND / PALESTINE / ONE STRUGGLE!"
Carlos Latuff is a Brazilian political cartoonist who has equated Israel and America with Nazi Germany and promoted violence. In 2006, he won second prize at Iran’s “International Holocaust Cartoon Competition” for a cartoon that compared Israel’s security barrier to Nazi concentration camps.
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by pro-terror activist Omar Barghouti in 2005 to turn “Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.” Barghouti has also called for Israel's destruction and the BDS movement demands would result in that same goal.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been infiltrating university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments propose resolutions to boycott or divestment from Israel or Israeli-affiliated entities. BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents and pro-terror activism on campus.
