Shaheen Nassar

Overview

Shaheen Nassar was found guilty of criminal charges for disrupting a 2010 speech by an Israeli official. Nasser has also spread anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, promoted incitement, and expressed support for terrorists. He has also spread hatred of Zionists and Israel.

Nassar is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

As of July 2023, Nassar’s LinkedIn page said that he was the full-time “Program Coordinator/ Project Manager” at the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) Los Angeles (CAIR-LA). As of the same date, Nassar was listed as an “outreach and volunteer coordinator” at CAIR-LA.

As of the same date, Nassar’s bio on the CAIR-LA website said that he graduated from the University of California, Riverside (UCR) with a bachelor’s degree in ethnic studies.

In June 2017, Nassar tweeted from Riverside, California, that he worked in a “psych hospital.” In June 2018, Nassar tweeted that he managed “a blood lab in a hospital,” and that he planned to “get into grad school.”

As of July 2023, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) listed Nassar as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT1). As of the same date, Nassar's license, first issued on 02/19/2013, was “inactive.”

As of May 2023, Nassar’s LinkedIn page said that he lived in Corona, California.

As of the same date, Nassar used the handle “@PostModrnMalone” on Twitter. He also went by the username “Shaheen Lapointe Nassar” on Facebook.

Criminal Charges

In February 2010, Nassar was one of the Irvine 11, a group of eight University of California, Irvine (UCI) students and three UCR students, who were arrested and prosecuted for their role in repeatedly disrupting a speech at UCI by Michael Oren, then the Israeli Ambassador to the United States.

On February 8, 2010, during Oren’s speech, Nassar, who was wearing a red T-shirt, stood up [00:06:39] and shouted [00:06:48] at Oren: “You, sir, are an accomplice to genocide!”

Campus police escorted Nassar from the hall when he shouted [00:06:51]: “Down with the zionist genocidal machine!”

On April 15, 2011, Nasser pled “not guilty” to the charges against him.

On September 23, 2011, Nassar was one of 10 of the 11 students convicted and sentenced to three years of probation, 56 hours of community service and reportedly ordered to pay a $270 fine.

Spreading Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theories

On August 16, 2019, Nassar tweeted: “Congress’s relationship w the Israel is a lewd game show where contestants compete to see who can harm Palestinians the most for dirty money.”

The assertion that Jews use money as a means of control is a classic anti-Semitic conspiracy theory.

On July 11, 2018, Nassar tweeted: “European Jews are descendants of converts to Judiasm. The blood of the Israelites flowed through the veins of Palestinian Jews who were overwhelmingly anti-zionist. You’re just colonizers citing the bible the justify bloodshed & slavery, much like manifest destiny.”

One way that anti-Israel activists spread anti-Semitism is to claim [00:06:46] that Jews, particularly Ashkenazi Jews, do not descend from the ancient Israelites. This claim alleges that Jews are white Europeans who lack a connection to the Land of Israel. The Khazar myth is a common version of this claim which is used to delegitimize [00:02:16] the existence of the modern State of Israel.

On June 11, 2021, Nasser spoke at an event titled: “Palestine/Israel: A History of Colonization and Apartheid.” The event was co-hosted by the Islamic Society of Orange County Muslim Youth Group (ISOC MYG), Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and CAIR-LA.

Nassar said [00:50:02]: “...much of European Jews and much of the European Jewish colonizers of Palestine are all descendants of medieval converts to Judaism and that realistically the blood of the ancient Israelites most likely flows in the blood of Palestinians that were there.”

On June 2, 2018, Nassar tweeted: “They didnt even leave. The original Israelites were amongst many different tribes inhabiting the region that later converted to Christianity, Islam or practiced Judiasm in opposition to Zionist project. European Jews are descendants for of medieval converts. They have no claim.”

Promoting Incitement

On June 24, 2017, Nassar tweeted: “Masjid Al Aqsa is the 2nd holiest place for Muslims; its moral obligation to liberate it fron European settler colonization.”

The allegation that Jews “threaten” to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque has been a pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before the existence of the modern Jewish state. Such propaganda has led to multiple periods of violence against Israeli civilians.

On July 24, 2017, Nassar tweeted a flyer promoting a march for Al-Aqsa and wrote: “Israel's desecration of Al Aqsa symbolizes its desecration of Palestine as a whole. RT this if you want to see a #FreePalestine #FreeQuds.”

On July 14, 2017, terrorists murdered two Israeli police officers outside the entrance to the Al-Aqsa compound, reportedly following claims that the Al-Aqsa Mosque was in danger. In response to the terror attack, Israel installed metal detectors and security cameras at the entrance to the holy site, which the authorities later removed, after further rioting and escalation in violence.

On July 31, 2017, Nassar tweeted: “Alhamdilah, demo yesterday in DTLA for #AlAqsa was effective. We defiantly celebrated the momentary victory & protested Israeli occupation.”

Nassar’s tweet included two photos of him holding a microphone at the event.

Support for Terrorists

On July 13, 2017, Nassar tweeted: “Why do we continue to validate this Israeli narrative? Hamas is a democratically elected party & Israel, at its core, IS terrorism.”

Hamas has been designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S., Canada, European Union, Israel and other countries. Founded in 1987, it has killed thousands of Israeli civilians through mass shootings and suicide bombings. Hamas has also kidnapped children, families and the elderly and held them hostage in Gaza. It has desecrated [slide 2] dead bodies and launched numerous rocket attacks against Israeli civilians.

Hamas's founding charter calls for the murder of Jews, while the terror group’s “summer camps” have taught children how to wage war.

On August 8, 2017, Nassar tweeted: “Hamas is a democratically elected, albeit right leaning, govt. & Israel is genocidal apartheid state. There's no comparison.”

On April 6, 2017, Al Jazeera published an opinion piece by Nassar titled: “Zionism’s problem with intersectionality,” in which Nassar praised terrorist Rasmea Odeh, writing: “Words fail at professing the raw strength she embodies. She is our matriarch; a walking symbol of the intersections of feminism and racial justice…Any slight against her credibility is a sign of extreme moral cowardice.”

Odeh was a key military operative [00:02:08]with the designated terrorist organization Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 1969, she masterminded a supermarket bombing that killed two college students and attempted to bomb the British consulate in Jerusalem. In 1970, Odeh was sentenced to life imprisonment for her role in both bombings, but was released after 10 years. She later moved to the United States but was stripped of U.S. citizenship, deported to Jordan and banned for life from reentering the U.S. for immigration fraud.

On July 2, 2018, Nassar tweeted: “The word ‘Hamas’ doesn’t even have meaning anymore. Israelis have attributed so much made up s**t to it, it might as well be renamed Cthulu: the demonic, octopus headed destroyer of worlds.”

On July 20, 2018, Nassar tweeted: “Also lets give a hand👏🏼to those Apartheid-supporters who keep trying to derail the convo w Hamas. If it hadn’t been for your pathetic attempts to distract from Palestinian suffering, Israel’s profound racism wouldn’t be this evident.”

On July 28, 2018, Nassar tweeted: “Hamas is a red herring. They are virtually powerless & can’t compete w the level of terror promised by Israel. Again instead of addressing imagined crimes, lets discuss how Zionists are willing to justify the slaughter of Palestinian by claiming they are somehow affiliated.”

Hatred of Zionists

In his April 6, 2017 Al Jazeera opinion piece, Nassar also wrote: “If I can credit Israel’s supporters with one thing, it’s their ability to manipulate the truth to atrocious ends… / Cheerleaders of Israeli apartheid simply don’t want to talk about how the occupied territories are plagued with a state-sponsored ethnic cleansing programme.”

On July 9, 2018, Nassar tweeted: “Anti-Palestinian racism is socially acceptable & Zionists justify their privilege with a narrative of victimhood. Sound familiar? Its like white people everywhere attended the same ‘how to perpetuate oppression’ seminar.”

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.

Also on July 9, 2018, Nassar tweeted: “They’ve reinvented the term ‘antisemite’ to mean anyone who challenges their privilege. My point is these Zionists are going to keep coming after you so long as you recognize Palestinians are people. Its best to challenge them boldly, unapologetically.”

On July 6, 2018, Nassar tweeted: “Listen you white supremacist/zionist f**k, having a state that is RACIALLY/ETHNICALLY EXCLUSIVE IS THE DEFINITION OF RACISM. You’ve elevated the bar for idiots everywhere. This is incredible.”

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) highlights as one possible contemporary example of anti-Semitism: “Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.” The U.S. State Department adopted the IHRA’s working definition of anti-Semitism in 2016. Over 40 other countries have adopted the definition as well.
On April 29, 2019, Nassar tweeted: “By attacking @IlhanMN [Congresswoman Ilhan Omar], Zionists are derailing the convo away from actual white supremacists / antisemites, therby keeping the Jewish community in peril. / Zionists are antisemites.”

Ilhan Omar was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018. In February 2019, top Congressional leaders denounced Omar for tweeting anti-Semitic remarks.Omar has demonized Israel and endorsed BDS. In July 2019, Omar introduced a pro-BDS resolution in the U.S. Congress, which she described as “an opportunity for us to explain why it is we support…the BDS movement.”

Hatred of Israel

On June 11, 2021, while participating in an event titled: “Palestine/Israel: A History of Colonization and Apartheid,” Nassar said [00:48:59]: “The reality is we have a situation of racial apartheid, we have a situation of ethnic cleansing, we have a situation of genocide, we have a situation of settler colonization.”

At the same event, Nassar continued [00:52:07]: “...zionism is this racial supremacist ideology.”

At the same event Nassar added [1:50:07]: “So when we’re exploring the… logic of Israeli hasbara, their propaganda, we’re exploring the logic of genocide, we’re exploring, uh, colonial racism.”

On July 10, 2020, Nassar tweeted: “Pro-tip: There’s a difference between ‘A right to secure borders’ vs ‘ A right to exist’. The latter is code for ‘We have a racially superior right to occupy this land so it’s morally OK that we killed your people & segregated the survivors’ #FreePalestine #israeliapartheid.”

On July 10, 2020, Nassar, responding to another Twitter user, tweeted: “You’re being racist by trying to justify apartheid, murder abd ethnic cleansing. . Israel is inherently anti-semetic. Apatheid has no right to exist.”

On August 8, 2019, Nassar tweeted: “yeah you’re kind of a dumba** Bret; I know you probably wish things could go back to the way they were before desegregation, but apartheid Israel deserves to be boycotted, so suck it up.”

On June 26, 2019, Nassar tweeted: “The word ‘Israeli’ should always be followed by “colonizer” imo [in my opinion] / Stop legitimizing land-theft: call ‘em for what they really are.”

On July 11, 2018, Nassar tweeted: “Going to Israel for any reason besides the liberation of Palestinians & other POC [people of color] is a morally repulsive choice. I’m sorry but our colonized, ethnically cleansed, anscestral homeland is NOT your vacation destination. Dont be complicit in Israeli apartheid.”

CAIR

CAIR describes itself as a “grassroots civil rights and advocacy group” and “America's largest Muslim civil liberties organization, with regional offices nationwide.” Its official mission is “enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.”

CAIR reportedly has “significant ties” to the Muslim Brotherhood, as well as Hamas. A number of former CAIR employees have been convicted on fraud and terrorism-related charges that resulted monetary fines, jail terms and, sometimes, deportation.

CAIR was founded in 1994 and opened its first office in Washington, DC, with the help of a $5,000 donation from the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF), a charity founded by Mousa Abu Marzook.

Marzook, who was listed as a "Specially Designated Terrorist" by the U.S. Treasury Department in 1995, is reportedly a senior member of Hamas.

In May 2007, CAIR was listed as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in a U.S.-filed action against the HLF for providing funds to Hamas.

CAIR was also listed  as a terrorist entity by the United Arab Emirates, in 2014.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
