Sarah Shah
Sarah Shah showed support for the pro-Hamas encampment at UofT in May 2024.
On May 4, 2024, Shah posted on Instagram a video from the UofT encampment and wrote: “The people’s circle for Palestine
at UofT @occupyuoft.” The encampment was in support of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
The People’s Circle for Palestine is another name for the UofT encampment.
In the video Shah posted, anti-Israel protestors chanted [00:00:25]: “Brick by brick, wall by wall, Zionism will fall!”
One of the signs displayed at the rally read [00:00:07]: “FROM TURTLE ISLAND / TO / PALESTINE / UofT SUPPORTS / GENOCIDE.”
The phrase “Turtle Island” or “occupied Turtle Island” is a name that some indigenous peoples use for North America. The call to “decolonize” Turtle Island, shouted at anti-Israel rallies and backed by major anti-Israel activist groups, is a call for the destruction of the United States of America and Canada. Similarly, the call to “decolonize” Palestine is a call for Israel’s destruction.
As of August 2024, Shah’s Instagram bio said: “

The watermelon has been appropriated by terrorists and anti-Israel activists as a symbol of Palestinian "resistance" to "Israeli occupation," as it shares the Pan-Arab colors. It gained widespread popularity and usage following the Hamas terror attacks of October 7, 2023.
UofT is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
