Sakina Hassanali

Overview

Sakina Hassanali has expressed support for terrorism, spread incitement and engaged in anti-Israel activism.

Hassanali is a supporter [slide 63] of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. She was affiliated with the anti-Israel groups Canadian Defenders for Human Rights (CD4HR) and Global Rise 4 Palestine in May 2022.

As of April 2023, Hassanali was affiliated with the Muslim Student Association (MSA) at York University (York) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

In June 2022, Hassanali was reportedly due to attend York to study Global Political Studies.

As of July 2023, Hassanali used the handle “@itz_saki.28” on Instagram and “@fitness.saki” on TikTok.

Hassanali expressed support for terror during her pre-university years. She was an organizer with Global Rise 4 Palestine in July 2021 and a member of Toronto4Palestine in October 2021. Toronto4Palestine was formerly called the Greater Toronto Area Palestine Movement.

Support for Terrorism

On April 15, 2023, Hassanali participated in an Al Quds Day rally in Toronto, where she was filmed on video chanting into a megaphone while the crowd yelled: “Viva viva intifada!” and “There is only one solution! Intifada revolution!”

The Iranian government initiated International Quds Day in 1979, as an annual protest against Israel’s existence. The protest has historically been a platform for anti-Semitism.

The term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” carries the connotation of violence. Palestinian intifadas waged against Israel have been marked since 1987 by hundreds of hijackings, shootings, stabbings, bombings and suicide missions.

The video also showed a protester holding a sign that said [00:00:07]: “ONE HOLOCAUST DOES NOT JUSTIFY ANOTHER.”

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) highlights as one possible contemporary example of anti-Semitism: “Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.” The U.S. State Department adopted the IHRA’s working definition of anti-Semitism in 2016. Over 40 countries have adopted the definition as well.

A banner displayed at the protest said [00:00:18]: “Resistance is justified when people are occupied” and another protester was photographed holding a sign that said: “WHEN INJUSTICE BECOMES LAW RESISTANCE BECOMES DUTY” with symbols equating the Star of David with a Nazi swastika.

Among Palestinians and anti-Israel activists, the term “resistance” can be a euphemism for nationalistic terror. It is often used to excuse or even glorify anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence.

Protesters also chanted: “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free!”

“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is a chant calling to dismantle the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state.

On the day of the protest, Hassanali posted a video on TikTok of herself painting a Palestinian flag on a protester’s hand. In the post, she wrote: “#palestine #toronto #alquds #alqudstoronto.”

On the same date, Hassanali posted [slide 51] an Instagram story showing the TikTok video and a photo of herself at the protest with a caption that said “❌Zionism & terrorism❌.”

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.

On April 16, 2023, Hassanali posted [slide 52] a series of photos from the protest, including one of herself holding a megaphone.

Spreading Incitement

On April 16, 2022, Hassanali posted [slide 53] an “action alert” that called to “URGE THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT TO CONDEMN THE ATTACKS ON AL-AQSA MOSQUE.”

The allegation that Jews “threaten” to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque has been a pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before the existence of the modern Jewish state. Such propaganda has led to multiple periods of violence against Israeli civilians.

Also on April 16, 2022, Hassanali posted [slide 51] an Instagram story with a video that was captioned: “Israeli occupation forces invade Masjid al-Aqsa and throw grenades at worshippers.”

Anti-Israel Activism (CD4HR)

On May 13, 2023, Hassanali posted [slide 65] a video from a “Nakba Day” protest in Toronto of activists marching, that she captioned “Palestinian Resistance.” Protesters could be seen in the video holding signs calling for “Justice for Khader Adnan” and that said “#HandsOffAlAqsa.”

The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.

Khader Adnan was a senior member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist organization. A 2007 YouTube video showed Adnan praising and encouraging suicide bombings: "Who among you will carry the next explosive belt? Who among you will fire the next bullets? Who among you will have his body parts blown all over?” In May 2023, Adnan died in prison after refusing medical treatment during a hunger strike.

On May 29, 2022, Hassanali participated in a protest in Toronto planned by CD4HR to disrupt a pro-Israel event organized by the UJA [United Jewish Appeal] Federation of Greater Toronto. A flyer for the CD4HR protest said: “Walk against apartheid ‘israel’ as thousands walk with ‘israel’ to celebrate the occupation of holy Palestine.”

On the same date, Hassanali posted [slide 55] an Instagram video from the protest, that she captioned: “LOOK AT THEM PARTYING WHILE THEY FUND KILLING IN PALESTINE. DISGUSTING. #FREE PALESTINE.”

A video from the protest showed [00:00:19] a sign that said: “APARTHEID ZIONIST CHILD KILLERS,” and which featured an image of the Israeli flag dripping with blood.

The day after, Hassanali posted a video of activists shouting at police officers at the protest, and calling them a “coward” and “inhumane.”

Hassanali wrote: “YESTERDAY, SOME COPS TOLD US PRIVATELY THAT THEY SUPPORT PALESTINE BUT NEEDED TO REMAIN NEUTRAL IN THE HEAT OF THIS EVENT TO STAY SAFE…WHY SHOULD COPS WHO SUPPORT PALESTINE HAVE TO WORRY OF THEIR SAFETY BUT THOSE WHO SUPPORT TERRORISM OPENLY NOT NEED TO?”

Hassanali also “liked” a comment on her video that said: “Zios have a lot of power in Canada and have the money and influence to have police and political leaders in their pockets…”

The term "Zio" is a common derogatory reference to Zionists, as well as an often-used anti-Semitic slur among white supremacists.

On May 14, 2022, Hassanali spoke at an event to commemorate “Nakba Day” in Guelph, organized by groups including Guelph Palestinian Student Association and Global Rise 4 Palestine.

During her speech, Hassanali accused [00:00:24] Israel of “...ethnic cleansing…war crimes, imprisonment, abuse and genocide.”

Pre-University Terror Support

On October 23, 2021, Hassanali featured in an Instagram video of Toronto4Palestine activists announcing their participation in a hunger strike to demonstrate solidarity with Palestinian terrorists in Israeli prisons.

In October 2021, six prisoners affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ)'s armed wing, the Al-Quds Brigades, chose to prolong their hunger strike in protest of their administrative detention by Israel. The six men were Kayed al-Fasfus, Miqdad al-Qawasmeh, Alaa Aaraj, Hisham Abu Hawwash, Shadi Abu-Akr and Ayyad Hureimi.

On September 8, 2021, Hassanali posted [slide 33] an Instagram story celebrating the escape of Palestinian terrorists from an Israeli prison.

On September 6, 2021, six Palestinian prisoners escaped from the maximum-security Gilboa Prison in Israel. The escaped prisoners were convicted members of the terror organizations Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, who were jailed for their involvement in attacks carried out during the second intifada. All were recaptured by September 19, 2021, by Israeli authorities.

On July 12, 2021, Hassanali posted [slide 12] an Instagram story showing BDS stickers that had been delivered to her, and a song in the background with lyrics that said: “...it’s about time we globalized the intifada.”

Pre-University Anti-Israel Activism (BDS)

On July 4, 2021, Hassanali co-organized a Global Rise 4 Palestine BDS protest held in Mississauga.

Protesters blocked trucks and entrances at a Walmart distribution center, because of Walmart’s alleged support for Israel. Protesters held signs that said [slide 7]: “AL-AQSA NOT YOURS TO TAKE” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”

At the protest, Hassanali led activists in chanting [00:01:52] “be-ruh be-dam nifdik ya Aqsa.”

The chant: “be-ruh be-dam nifdik ya Aqsaبروح ودم نفديك يااقصى [With spirit, with blood, we will redeem you, Aqsa]” can be heard [00:01:14] at anti-Israel rallies [00:02:19] in America. Yasser Arafat popularized the chant [00:00:23], which is invoked by anti-Israel protesters regarding a variety of causes.

Hassanali also designed [slide 21] a poster for Global Rise 4 Palestine, promoting their events.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
