Rupa Marya
Overview
Rupa Marya is a physician and professor who justified Hamas terrorism, called for the destruction of Israel, spread anti-Semitism and promoted hatred of Israel during its war against Hamas in late 2023 and early 2024.Marya’s statements on social media occurred following a series of Hamas terror atrocities and war crimes against Israeli civilians, including mass murder, torture, rape, beheadings and kidnappings, which were executed on October 7, 2023.
The Hamas terror attacks left over 1,200 Israelis dead, hundreds kidnapped and thousands wounded. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.”
Marya is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
As of January 2024, Marya was listed online as a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
Also as of January 2024, Marya was listed online as an internal medicine specialist whose focus was the “care of seriously ill patients” in the UCSF hospital.
In November 2024, Marya was reportedly suspended from teaching at USCF “following social media posts accusing Israel of genocide and expressing concern over an Israeli student’s service in the IDF [Israel Defense Forces].”
As of January 2024, Marya’s since-deleted personal website said Marya was the founder and executive director of Deep Medicine Circle, which Marya’s website called a “worker-directed nonprofit committed to healing the wounds of colonialism through food, medicine, story, learning and restoration.”
Also as of the same date, Marya’s website said Marya was the co-founder of the Do No Harm Coalition, a “group of healthcare workers committed to changing social structures that make health impossible for different groups of people.” The group’s website has promoted anti-Semitism and hatred of Israel.
Justifying Hamas Terrorism
On December 8, 2023, Marya tweeted: “Hamas is a symptom of the problem, not the problem. / The problem is Israel’s brutal occupation and apartheid state. / End the occupation, and you end the resistance…”On December 6, 2023, Marya tweeted, referring to Israel’s war against Hamas: “The misuse of the word ‘intifada’ once again. Intifada is resistance to oppression, to shake off the oppression. It’s not genocide, which is what Israel is doing RIGHT NOW in Gaza.”
The term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” carries the connotation of violence. Palestinian intifadas waged against Israel have been marked since 1987 by hundreds of hijackings, shootings, stabbings, bombings and suicide missions.
Calling for the Destruction of Israel
On November 26, 2023, Marya tweeted: “...A One State Solution requires the dissolution of Israel as a political entity and the creation of a new single.”Anti-Semitism and Hatred of Israel
On December 2, 2024, Marya posted on X: “I am not a fan of organized religions but respect people’s preferences and practices. I sometimes wonder if this rampant need by some Christians, Jews and Hindus to kill Muslims comes from some weird jealousy that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world.”Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture. Zionism is a core part of the identity of most Jews.
On the same day, Marya tweeted about Israel’s war against Hamas: “as Israel conducts an ACTUAL GENOCIDE… / From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free is a freedom chant…It is a call for freedom. For all.”
“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free” is a chant used [00:02:47] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state. In April 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning the chant as antisemitic.
On December 23, 2023, Marya tweeted: “Palestine will be free. / Our planet and a life without fascism depends upon it.
.”On December 31, 2023, Marya posted on Facebook: “Police officers train with the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] in Israel. They’re training there to learn the tactics of mass repression here. The US police are murdering more people than ever before.”
The accusation that Israeli law enforcement teaches American police brutal tactics during police exchange programs is used to demonize Israel. Participants in these programs have stated [00:02:14] that the training in Israel focuses [00:13:36] on public policy, counterterrorism and leadership training in the form of lectures and discussions.
On January 2, 2014, Marya tweeted: “The presence of Zionism in US medicine should be examined as a structural impediment to health equity. Zionism is a supremacist, racist ideology and we see Zionist doctors justifying the genocide of Palestinians. How does their outlook/position impact priorities in US medicine?”
Hatred of Israelis and Zionists
On January 2, 2014, Marya tweeted: “The presence of Zionism in US medicine should be examined as a structural impediment to health equity. Zionism is a supremacist, racist ideology and we see Zionist doctors justifying the genocide of Palestinians. How does their outlook/position impact priorities in US medicine?”On September 21, 2024, Marya posted on X: “Med students at UCSF are concerned that a first year student from Israel is in their class. They’re asking if he participated in the genocide of Palestinians in the IDF before matriculating into medical school in CA. How do we address this in our professional ranks?”
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
