Demonizing Israel

On November 19, 2012, Tometi tweeted during Israel’s Operation Pillar of Defense (OPD) against Hamas: “RT @andalalucha: RT @ZacharyWNorris: ACT NOW! Join Protest, Contact Obama to End Israel's Attacks on Gaza http://j.mp/TM3KjV.”

Israel launched OPD to stop Hamas rocket attacks on Israeli civilians from Gaza. Over the course of eight days in November 2012, Palestinian terrorist groups fired more than 1,500 rockets at Israel. The majority struck Israel, damaging homes, schools and other civilian areas. Human Rights Watch noted: “Palestinian armed groups made clear in their statements that harming civilians was their aim.”

Tometi’s tweet included a link that promoted the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and featured a quote from the Palestinian BDS National Committee accusing Israel of “state terrorism.”
On the following day, November 20, 2012, Tometi tweeted an Instagram link showing American and Israeli flags flying outside the New York Stock Exchange. Someone tweeted: “@opalayo ridiculous.” Tometi responded: “@DJAmenRa right?! I can't believe that sh*t!”

On the same date, Tometi tweeted: “From Syria to Gaza: The West’s Humanitarian Double Standards Exposed | Common Dreams http://ht.ly/fseZs.” The text of her tweet was the title of a CommonDreams.orgarticle that opposed America’s “unconditional support for Israel to defend itself” against Hamas, which the articledescribed as a “comparatively rag-tag military resistance wildly flinging rockets back at their tormentors.”

On November 21, 2012, Tometi tweeted: “Currently watching [VIDEO] From Jim Crow to Israeli Apartheid: African American Solidarity with Palestine http://ht.ly/fsh2k HT @BAJItweet”

On August 2, 2014, Tometi tweeted a photo of anti-deportation activists holding signs at an anti-Israel protest during Israel’s Operation Protective Edge (OPE). She wrote: “The most beautiful merging of free Palestine and not 1 more action!”

Israel commenced Operation Protective Edge (OPE) in July 2014, to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.

Spreading Hatred of America

On July 13, 2013, Tometi tweeted: “Amerikkka. My heart is so heavy. Mourn today, protest tomorrow.”

The term “Amerikkka” uses the initials of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) as a way to demonize America as “fascist or racist.”

On October 2, 2013, Tometi tweeted: “‘I love New York, it's just a shame that it's in the United States of America.’ - @Liepollo99.”

Supporting a Domestic Terrorist

On May 2, 2015, Tometi tweeted in support of Assata Shakur, writing: “#AssataTaughtMe.”

Assata Shakur was convicted of killing a New Jersey state trooper and wounding another in 1973 while a member of the Black Liberation Army (BLA). She escaped from prison in 1979 and fled to Cuba in 1984, where she resides today. She is listed on the FBI Most Wanted Terror List under her legal name, Joanne Deborah Chesimard.

On December 18, 2014, Tometi tweeted: “#HandsOffAssata.”

On the same day, President Barack Obama announced that the U.S. would restore relations with Cuba. The hashtag “#HandsOffAssata” has since been used to show support for Shakur and oppose her possible extradition to the U.S. from Cuba.
