Omar Albach
Overview
Omar Albach is an anti-Israel propagandist who has defended a terrorist and stone-throwing. He has also demonized Israel and Zionists and led an anti-Israel rally in Toronto. In August 2014, Albach featured [00:00:29] in a Youtube video promoting the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
As of August 2018, Albach’s Facebook page said he “studied” at York University (York) in Canada. His LinkedIn page said he studied at Toronto Film School from 2016-2017.
Anti-Israel Propaganda
On July 22, 2014, Albach co-created a video titled “Hug a Terrorist,” in which he accused Israel of deliberately killing Palestinian children during Israel’s Operation Protective Edge (OPE).The film begins with Albach standing next to two young girls holding a sign, which read “Hug a Terrorist.” Albach then stated [00:00:03] “For the past two weeks, Israel has been killing ‘terrorists’ just like the ones standing next to me.”
Throughout the summer of 2014 — during OPE — Hamas's deployment of human shields was documented and publicized. Hamas encouraged Gazans to act as human shields, to specifically frustrate Israeli efforts to avoid civilian casualties in Gaza.
Israel commenced Operation Protective Edge (OPE) in July 2014, to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.
In August 2014, Albach was reportedly the creator of a video titled “If Toronto Was Occupied by Israel.” The video depicted an idyllic summer evening disrupted by Israeli soldiers, who kidnap and severely beat a teenage boy.
Later in the video, clips of real Israeli troops detaining Palestinians follow the staged scene, accompanied by allegations [00:02:32] such as “Since year 2000, almost one Palestinian child has been killed by Israeli soldiers every 3 days.” The video ended with a call to boycott Israeli products.
Defending a Terrorist
On October 12, 2015, Albach posted on Facebook a video of 13-year old terrorist Ahmad Manasra lying wounded on the street and being shouted at by bystanders, following Manasra’s stabbing spree in Jerusalem.Albach commented: “Look at what these Zionist pigs are doing! Look at these filthy heartless pigs. Look at what they're doing to the Palestinian child... Leaving him to bleed to death!”
Ahmed Manasra (sometimes spelled Mansara) and his 15-year-old cousin Hassan went on a stabbing spree in Jerusalem on October 12, 2015, during the Knife Intifada. They critically wounded a 13-year-old boy and moderately wounded a 25-year-old man. The spree ended when police shot Hassan and a passing motorist hit Ahmed. Ahmed was taken to an Israeli hospital. He admitted to investigators: “I went there to stab Jews.” He was later tried and convicted on two counts of attempted murder.
On November 12, 20145, Albach claimed on Facebook post that Israeli police interrogated and mentally tortured Manasra, commenting: “This ANGERS me...Yes, we get angry. They try to make us look like terrorists for getting angry.”
Defending Stone-Throwing
On November 9, 2014, Albach wrote on Facebook: “It pains me to hear that though the Palestinians try to defend themselves from tanks and guns, they’re being stripped of the only weapon of defence; stones.”He continued: “It is devastating that the Israeli cabinet is backing bills to enforce harsher penalties on stone throwers in Palestine of up to 20 years in jail...How much harm can a stone possibly cause against such brutal forces?”
Palestinian stone throwers had been targeting Israeli civilian cars for years, often maiming or killing people in unprovoked attacks. Some stone throwing was actually staged for the benefit of photographers assembled to document the violence.
Albach’s post concluded: “Self-defence is not a crime.”
Demonizing Israel and Zionists
On November 17, 2015, during a wave of Palestinian violence against Israelis, which saw many attacks by perpetrated by teens, Albach claimed on Facebook: “Similar to how the pharaoh believed that the kids of the [I]sraelites were a threat, [Israel] sees the kids of Palestine the same way. They share the belief that kids are "potential terrorists" and should be killed.”Albach attached his statement to a cartoon caricature of an Israeli soldier holding an infant by its leg, while pointing a gun at it.
On October 24, 2015, Albach tweeted: “Remember when Israel used to be more moral and not kill people for no reason? Neither do I.”
On October 15, 2015, Albach tweeted: “Zionism and ISIS have so much in common. Zionism is butchering the image of Judaism and ISIS is butchering the image of Islam.”
On October 11, 2015, Albach tweeted: “Zionists are the Devils.”
in a May 2, 2015 Twitter post that featured a large pig, laying in a muddy puddle, Albach wrote: “and over here we have the most common breed of the Israeli Zionist in his natural habitat.”
On September 24, 2014, Albach tweeted: “Israel just wants Gaza to suffer, whether it's by bombing them or by ensuring that food does not enter. Evil.”
Anti-Israel Activism
On October 16, 2015, Albach helped organize and lead an anti-Israel protest in Toronto.October 2015 saw an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings — known as the “Knife Intifada” — saw young Palestinians throughout the country stabbing and attempting to stab Israeli civilians.
On October 18, 2015 Albach shared a post on Twitter, claiming that he arranged for an “Jewish Rabbi to come from New York and speak out for Palestine” during Albach’s anti-Israel protest two days earlier. Albach concluded his post, “God bless you Rabbi Weiss,” in reference to the leader of Neturei Karta, a fringe anti-Israel Jewish group.
Neturei Karta is an anti-Israel Jewish fringe group whose leader, Yisroel Dovid Weiss, was excommunicated from many Ultra-Orthodox Jewish groups for participating in a 2006 Holocaust denial conference in Iran. The group opposes Zionism on religious grounds and has called to dismantle Israel.
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
