Omar Al-Sawass

Omar Al-Sawass [Omar AlSawass] has spread anti-Semitism and promoted anti-Israel conspiracy theories. He also promoted hatred of Zionists, demonized Zionism and spread hatred of Israel on Twitter.

Al-Sawass is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

As of December 2020, Al-Sawass’s LinkedIn page said he was a Senior Resolution Specialist at Phreesia, in Ottawa, Ontario, from “Mar 2020 - Present.”

Al-Sawass’ LinkedIn also indicated that he studied at the Global University of Beirut (GU), from “2005 - 2009,” where he studied Information Technology.

As of July 2019, Al-Sawass used the aliases “MelancholicOmar” on Twitter, omarnabsws on Instagram and Hotcreep on Curiouscat. 

Anti-Semitism

On August 5, 2018, in response to a tweet that featured a video of Jewish Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz, Al-Sawass tweeted: “It all comes back to Israel with Alan. Why are American Zionists such Israel firsters?”

The term “Israel-Firster” is an anti-Semitic slur used against Jews to accuse them of dual loyalty. The term also applies to non-Jews to allege they are more loyal to Israel than to their own countries.  

On July 6, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Zionist orgs and labour center wanted to add 6 points to the labour definition of anti-Semitism that labour refused. 4 of these points are about israel so they can f**k right off. I read them and like 5 of them apply to me.”

Sawass’s tweet referenced a decision by England’s Labour party to reject the full International Holocaust Remembrance Association (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism, by removing examples such as “accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel than their own nations, claiming that the existence of the state of Israel is a racist endeavour and comparing Israeli actions to those of the Nazis."

On June 6, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: "Fact: all zionists are israel firsters.”

On April 1, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “I remember when i once used Zio because the tweet didn't f**king fit, and my mentions got flooded people like Linda who called me a Nazi. As if everyone is expected to know the history of every term or word used anywhere. Granted i use Pali, Leb, etc all the time.”

The term "Zio" is a common derogatory reference to Zionists, as well as an often-used anti-Semitic slur among white supremacists.

Later that day, Al-Sawass tweeted: “i will use Zio as short for Zionist if i feel like it and i really won't care if people like yourself call me an anti-semite.”

Anti-Israel Conspiracy Theories

On February 10, 2020, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Anyone who actually believes that Israel doesn’t have disproportional power in the USA ans pretends to be shocked everytime someone mentions it and play the anti-semitism card needs to f**k right off.”

On July 18, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Ilhan [Omar] is a black woman wearing a hijab, standing against a rabidly racist society, the democratic and the republican establishments, media smears, and still managing to introduce bold pro-palestinian legislation in a country that has its balls in israel’s hands.”

Al-Sawass added in the same thread: “Most courageous american politician hands down.”

On July 17, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Dumb take . They dont have to be jews to be zionists, no one mentioned anything about who owns cnn and abc, but they ARE zionist orgs...”

Promoting Hatred of Zionists

On July 27, 2019, Al-Sawaa tweeted: “If i hear one more zionist talking about ‘israeli tech’ im kicking a pug.”

On June 1, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Montreal zionists are the worst kind of zionists.” 

On April 2, 2019, Al-Sawaa tweeted: “When push comes to shove, all zionists are Islamophobes. You debate them, they start talking about liberal values and being an composed and s**t, but when you corner them, their true colours show.”

On March 1, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Zionist is a slur and if you can't recognize that you have no place in the palestinian solidarity movement, that if you considered yourself part of it in the first place.”

On February 28, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Not that i disagree with Miko, Zionists ARE shite, doesn't matter if its 5% or 95% of Jews, if a person believes in a racist ethnoreligious supremacist ideology then well, if the shoe fits.”

On February 27, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “if they are zionists then they are vile, no matter what other work they do,. is it that hard to get into your head?”

On February 17, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Wouldnt expect anything else from zionist scum.”

On February 1, 2019, Al-Sawaa tweeted: “Lemme start: Zionism is racist, zionists are racist and israel is an apartheid state.”

On January 26, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Zionists are so tiring.. especially liberal ones.. they want to be accepted in progressive spaces without letting go of one of the most regressive and racist ideologies in the world.”

On January 23, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Zionist's new target: ilhan omar. They ruin everything.”

On January 16, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “I am sad and depressed today so i am taking all my s**t on zionists #coping.”

On the same day, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Nah im just saying it as it is. If you are a zionist, you are a racist. Sucks for you. Maybe you should better yourself and abandon a racist and archaic ideology that's literally based on denying non-jews rights and stealing their land.” 

On January 10, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “InshaAllah my timeline will be zionist free.”

On January 6, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: "Dude, yad vashem are zionists, hence they suck.” Yad Vashem is Israel’s official memorial museum for Holocaust victims.
 
On December 29, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Lahav's entitlement comes to show how disgusting zionists are. Sh**bags.”

That same day, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Zionists who talk like that, totally oblivious to their entitlement and racism, make me want to strangle puppies.”

On October 23, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “F**k zionists lmao.”

On July 5, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “InshaAllah all mainstream support for the Zionist Entity will disappear in 2018.”

Demonizing Zionism

On January 25, 2020, Al-Sawass tweeted: “For many palestinians, zionism is the enemy, the ideology that strip them from their land, and ethnically cleansed many non-jew from what is now israel proper. Does your solidarity extend to palestinians white boy bobby? Or is settle colonialism bad everywhere but in palestine?”

On June 27, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Im muslim and arab and i think zionism is both islamophobic and racist. How does that sound to you?”

On June 9, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Zionism is racist the sooner you admit it the better. Will make your life easier trust.”

On April 17, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “I use zionist as a slur and i know quite well what it means.”

On the same day, Al-Sawass tweeted: “But zionism really does suck, nothing anti-semitic about that.”

On April 16, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Zionism is the enemy of peace.”

On December 23, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Zionism is literally racism. The fact that you don't see it says alot about your morals. F**k outa here.”

Spreading Hatred of Israel

On May 11, 2020, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Watching a movie where not only america saves the world, but israel too. If anyone is going to share the credit for saving the world in hollywood it gotta be america’s little apartheid puppet i guess.”

On December 29, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “The parallels between apartheid south africa and israel just write themselves at this point.. the same "there is no palestinisn genocide cause palestinian numbers are increasing crap….”

On December 10, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “The state of Israel is a cancer in the levant. A very aggressive cancer. Probably incurable though, only wish it just never existed. If these f**king zionists chose to settle in siberia instead and left us the f**k alone.”

On April 2, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Israel is a sick racist society, deserves all the s**t that comes its way, you wanna consider it as demonizing jewish people fine loool.”

On October 8, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Follow @davidsheen for some insite on how viciously racist, toxic and vile the vast majority of israelis are.”

David Sheen is a Canadian-Israeli anti-Israel activist and filmmaker who works to portray Israel as an extremist racist state. To this end, Sheen has been accused of purposefully mistranslating Hebrew articles and advertisements to make Israelis appear racist. 

On January 15, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Lmao liberal israelis are genocidal. I swear this is the sickest society in ‘the west.’” 

On December 14, 2017, Al-Sawass tweeted: “People are seeing israelis for what they are. A murderous and racist nation. You can argue all you want that israel doesnt need western help to thrive, but you would be fooling yourself honestly.”

On July 9, 2014, Al-Sawass tweeted: “f**king hate israelis so much.”

Support for BDS

On February 3, 2020, Al-Sawass responded to a tweet referencing Sabra Hummus, tweeting: “Sir this brand takes blood money and is on a bds list,,, might not be your cause but it’s an issue for many people.”

Sabra Hummus is partially owned by an Israeli company, the Strauss Group.

On May 28, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “I wasnt too keen about @disneyaladdin but i still was planning to watch it, until i saw that @MenaMassoud tweet being grossly stupid and out of touch on the suffering of palestinians by promoting pal and levantine food as israeli. Will boycott the movie and i ask everyone else to.”

On May 25, 2019, Al-Sawaa tweeted in reference to a musician scheduled to perform in Israel: “Honestly im not even going to bother to tell her about BDS cause her performing there is punishment enough .” 

On January 29, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “All democratic senator pu**ies are starting these tweets with "i don't support bds" lmao well you should stoopid.”

On January 24, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Racism wins you elections in israel. Plain and simple. Bds is the only way”.

On January 22, 2019, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Im going to stop arguing whether bds is anti-semitic or not, but rather that it is righteous. Ya'll free to consider it, and me, whatever you want.”

On January 21, 2019, Al-Sawass also tweeted: “There is no other way but to bds honestly... waiting till israelis become humane is a lost cause.”

On November 1, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Bds inshaAllah.” 

On October 12, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “Lmao they sued new zealand nationals in israel. An israeli court ruled it. It is just a petty ruling that cant be enforced. Keep having tantrums while people boycott your sh**ty country.”

In December 2017, the musician Lorde cancelled an upcoming concert in Israel following pressure by BDS activists in New Zealand. An Israeli court later ordered the activists to pay damages to Israeli fans.

On June 2, 2018, Al-Sawass tweeted: “The BDS is the only way to achieve that. It wont happen anytime soon. But eventually, it will.”

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true. 

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”  

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
