Nicholas Galloway

Overview

Nicholas Galloway has spread an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory, expressed support for violent protesters and promoted hatred of Israel on social media.

Galloway was an activist with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at the University of Maryland (UMD) in 2018

Galloway is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In 2018, Galloway was affiliated with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP)

As of July 2019, Galloway’s LinkedIn page said he was an Assessments Services Account Representative at BoardSource since July 2018, and an “Undergraduate Teaching Assistant” at the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park since August 2017.

Galloway’s LinkedIn page also said he studied Anthropology at UMD from “2014 - 2018.”

In February 2019, Galloway shared an acceptance letter from UMD on Facebook and wrote “I have been afforded the opportunity to pursue my PhD in Anthropology” and “look forward to my studies and research.”

As of July 2019, Galloway went by the alias “NickoGallo” on Twitter.

Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theory

On April 6, 2019, Galloway tweeted: “The Atlanta Police Department is one of many in the country that hold joint training exercises with Israeli Security Forces. American and Israeli forces are mutually reinforcing these abhorrent practices. This is why we call it #TheDeadlyExchange @jvplive.”

In 2017, JVP launched the “Deadly Exchange” (DX) campaign, accusing American Jewish organizations of promoting human rights abuses by coordinating exchange programs between American and Israeli security personnel to advance “worst practices" and racist policies. The campaign blamed [00:04:04] Jewish organizations for violence against Black and Brown communities, immigrants and activists in the U.S.

Support for Violent Protesters

On April 26, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “Stand with Jewish Voice for Peace today as they protest outside complicit Chuck Schumer's office. #JVP #FreeGaza.”

That day, JVP activists held a Jewish mourning ceremony outside the New York office of United States Senator, Chuck Schumer, to commemorate Gazans killed during the violent protests at the Israel-Gaza border.

On March 30, 2018, some 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza approached Israel’s border to take part in “Land Day Protests,” or the “March of Return.” The march was organized and funded by Hamas as a campaign of violent protests to spotlight the Palestinian demand to “return” to Israel. The “right of return” has since been discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

March participants sent scores of kites bearing explosive devices across Israel’s border to burn Israeli crops and homes. Participants also attempted to breach the border fence, which caused the Israeli Defense Forces to respond with live fire. Agitators also threw Molotov cocktails and firebombs, shot firearms and threw rocks.

On April 14, 2018, in response to a tweet by Chuck Schumer, that read: “A pinpointed, limited action to punish and hopefully deter Assad from doing this again is appropriate, but the administration has to be careful about not getting us into a greater and more involved war in Syria.” Galloway tweeted: “Will we be doing the same to Israel for slaughtering peaceful protesters?”

On March 30, 2019, Galloway wrote on Facebook: “Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of the Great March of Return…” The post featured a graphic produced by JVP that read:”PALESTINIANS SHOULD BE FREE.”

Galloway added: “I stand with Gaza, I support their right of return, and I say #LetGazaLive PC: Jewish Voice for Peace #GreatMarchOfReturn.”

The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel. International law mandates no absolute right of return and UN Resolution 194, which defined principles for “returning Palestine refugees to their homes,” was unanimously rejected by Arab nations following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

Promoting Hatred of Israel

On January 8, 2019, in response to a tweet about Israeli Shawarma, Galloway tweeted: “‘Not ‘Israeli’, it's Arabic. If you want ‘Israeli’ culture, go kill some unarmed kids or bomb a hospital.”

Galloway added: “Israel appropriates Arab culture bc it needs to battle the undeniable fact that it's a European settler colonial state. This s**t makes me sick they steal the land then they steal the culture and pretend you never existed. F**K ISRAEL.”

On December 31, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “FREE PALESTINE FREE GAZA STOP ISRAELI APARTHEID 2019.”

On December 27, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “Israel vacation pics are the ugliest thing you could post.”

On December 16, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “Israel and Israel's supporters are still using the Tree of Life Synagogue massacre to make its image more palatable and honestly it's disgusting. Nevermind the fact that using Israel as a placeholder for Judaism is downright anti-Semitic in and of itself.”

On November 12, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “@Pharrell has made it very, very clear that he is a ‘friend’ of ethnic cleansing, a ‘friend’ of killing unarmed protestors, and a ‘friend’ of apartheid by helping to raise money for the IDF. He doesn't get a pass just because he's made great music.”

Galloway continued: “Its one thing to perform in Israel. It's a whole other thing if you perform for a gala of war criminals in order to raise money for an occupying army who doesn't need any more money. Its beyond ignorance. It's beyond being an apologist. At that point you just hate Palestinians.”

Galloway added: “@Pharrell and @aplusk might not be murdering Palestinians themselves, but they have actively wielded their influence to make sure that Israel keeps doing so. F**k both of them.”

On November 27, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “Pro apartheid dickhead.” The tweet was in response to a tweet by U.S. House of Representatives member, Beto O'Rourke, that read: “Thanks to these Texans from AIPAC for coming by today. Productive conversation on the current security situation in Israel and how the United States can continue to support our important ally in the region.”

On November 5, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “Good morning, Israel is a genocidal project and a fascist state🙂.”

On August 17, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “At least the Likuds and rabid zionists are explicit in their intentions. J street is just diet genocide.”

On August 13, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “Shut up bibi you're literally committing genocide.”

The tweet was in response to a tweet by Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, that read: “The laying of a wreath by Jeremy Corbyn on the graves of the terrorist who perpetrated the Munich massacre and his comparison of Israel to the Nazis deserves unequivocal condemnation from everyone – left, right and everything in between.”

On April 20, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “The problem with being a Liberal Zionist is you're still a Zionist. Just a Diet Zionist™”

Support for BDS

On February 10, 2019, Galloway tweeted: “Bless @IlhanMN and her steadfast advocacy for #BDS in the face of immense pressure from the Pro-Israel jerks. Praying she stays the course! From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free! 🇵🇸✌.”

Ilhan Omar was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018. In February 2019, top Congressional leaders denounced Omar for tweeting anti-Semitic remarks.Omar has demonized Israel and endorsed BDS. In July 2019, Omar introduced a pro-BDS resolution in the U.S. Congress, which she described as “an opportunity for us to explain why it is we support…the BDS movement.”

On January 4, 2019, Galloway wrote on Facebook: “Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are officially in congress! There is now #BDSsupport in the national legislature 🇵🇸❤✌.”

Rashida Tlaib was elected to the U.S. Congress in November 2018. She has advocated for a one-state solution, endorsed the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and called for reduced foreign aid to Israel. In July 2019, Tlaib co-sponsored a pro-BDS bill in the U.S. Congress introduced by Rep. Ilhan Omar.

On November 19, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “BDS !!!!!!!” The tweet was in response to a tweet that read: “Airbnb drops Israeli settlements from listings.”

On October 15, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “SIGN THIS PETITION TO END UMD INVOLVEMENT IN APARTHEID #DivestUMD.” The tweet linked to a #DivestUMD petition calling on UMD to divest from companies that do business with Israel.

Divest UMD is a campaign that calls on UMD to divest from companies that do business with Israel.

On the same day, Galloway tweeted: “The University of Maryland is invested in apartheid. F**k that! #DivestUMD.”

On October 10, 2018, Galloway tweeted in defense of John Cheney-Lippold, saying: “Dr. Cheney-Lippold is being forced to delay his upcoming sabbatical and he is losing his scheduled raise because he stood with #BDS... This man has risked his reputation and livelihood to do what is right, props to you Professor.”

Cheney-Lippold sparked major controversy in September 2018, when he reneged on his offerto write a recommendation letter for a student to study abroad in Israel.

In an October 3, 2018 letter, the University of Michigan disciplined Cheney-Lippold by issuing a number of sanctions, including ineligibility “for a salary increase for the 2018-2019 academic year.” Further, Cheney-Lippold’s sabbatical eligibility and credits were frozen for two years “until the Fall 2020 semester.”

In April 2018, Galloway indicated on Twitter that he participated in a boycott event against “Israel Fest” at UMD, an annual campus event designed “to celebrate and educate students on Israeli culture,” hosted by the Jewish Student Union.

SJP UMD organized a “Teach-In: Boycott Israel Fest” on April 19, 2018.  The Facebook event page description said: “This year, we ask that you choose not to be complicit in apartheid, genocide, and the enduring illegal occupation of Palestine. Instead of normalizing Palestinian oppression, SJP calls for a massive boycott of Israel Fest by the UMD community, and ask that you attend our teach-in instead, to learn more about why we are boycotting and how you can support human rights.”

The following day, on April 20, 2018, Galloway wrote on Facebook: “What a lovely day! Thank you to everyone who spoke at our teach in and to everyone who came out to support us during our very successful teach-in!#FreePalestine 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸.” Galloway’s post featured a group photo of SJP UMD activists standing in front of a mock Israeli apartheid wall.

On April 10, 2018, Galloway wrote an article titled: “After violence in Gaza, UMD students should boycott Israel Fest.”

Galloway described Israel Fest as “engaging in two very harmful activities: the normalization of Israeli human rights violations and the erasure of Palestinian suffering.”

Galloway continued: “ By holding ‘a day celebrating Israel,’ we are framing the long and painful history of Israeli violence against Palestinians as both normal and acceptable.”

On March 31, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “#BoycottIsraelFest Friends at UMD. IsraelFest is April 19th this year Do not patronize them. They hold a yearly festival under the guise of promoting ‘Israeli culture’ But it is normalization and erasure Normalization of apartheid. Erasure of human rights atrocities.”

Anti-Israel Activism

On September 12, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “If you are in or around the UMD area tomorrow please come to this evening talk given by @BenjaminLadraa !!! 7 PM at the Chem and Nuclear Engineering Building! #SJP #UMD.”

Benjamin Ladraa, in 2017-2018, undertook a solo “walk for Palestine” to spread hatred of Israel. Ladraa also conducted an international anti-Israel speaking tour, defended terrorists, promoted the violent March of Return, and advocated for anti-Israel agitators.

On September 14, 2018, Galloway tweeted a group photo of Galloway with Ladraa and SJP UMD activists.

On April 11, 2018, Galloway was featured in a group photo shared on Facebook by SJP UMD with anti-Israel Poet, Remi Kanazi.

Poet Remi Kanazi is known for his aggressively anti-Israel spoken-word performances. He has supported terrorism and has compared Israel to both ISIS and the Ku Klux Klan.

The photo was taken at an SJP co-organized event, titled: “Think Beyond Pink: No Pride in Apartheid.” The Facebook event page description said the event was “a night of spoken word performance and education on pinkwashing.”

“Pinkwashing” is a claim that Israel advocates manipulate the LGBTQ community in order to garner support for Israel.

On April 6, 2018, Galloway tweeted: “Today UMD SJP raised a great amount of money for refugees! 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸 #FromTheRiverToTheSea.”

On March 16, 2018, Galloway shared a photo on Facebook of himself at an anti-Israel protest with activists holding signs made by the answercoalition.org. In the photo, Galloway held a sign that read: “Palestine Yes! Apartheid No!”

On March 6, 2018, Galloway shared the same photo on Instagram and wrote: “Had a great time protesting #AIPAC yesterday with some great people.”

Galloway also shared on Instagram a photo from the protest of a Neturei Karta activist holding a sign that read: “Judaism Rejects Zionism And the State of ‘Israel.’”

Neturei Karta is an anti-Israel Jewish fringe group whose leader, Yisroel Dovid Weiss, was excommunicated from many Ultra-Orthodox Jewish groups for participating in a 2006 Holocaust denial conference in Iran. The group opposes Zionism on religious grounds and has called to dismantle Israel.

SJP UMD - Supporting Terrorists

On April 8, 2018, SJP UMD shared a photo on Instagram of Ghassan Kanafani and wrote: “Today is the birthday of legendary Palestinian author and PFLP member Ghassan Kanafani (1936-72).”

Kanafani was a leading member and spokesperson for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) during the terrorist organization’s early years. Kanafani announced the PFLP’s responsibility for the Lod Airport Massacre of May 1972 and was linked to the airport attackers. The attack killed 26 people and wounded 80 others.

On March 9, 2018, SJP UMD shared a poster on Instagram produced by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and wrote: “Poster of the First Martyr of the Intifada #sjp #intifada.”

The caption on the poster read: “Hatem Al Sesi First Martyr of the Intifada for Freedom and Independence.”

Hatem al-Sisi was killed after he reportedly attemptedto drop a homemade bomb on an Israeli military vehicle during the first intifada.

On the same day, SJP UMD shared another PFLP poster on Instagram and wrote: “Today is Martyr’s day A day to remember all who sacrificed themselves for their people and for human rights #sjp.”

SJP UMD - Promoting Anti-Israel Agitators

On February 14, 2019, SJP UMD shared a group photo on Instagram featuring activists standing in front of a blackboard with “#IStandWithIlhan” written on it.

SJP UMD commented: “UMD SJP supports Rep. Ilhan Omar in calling out AIPAC’s role in influencing US policy towards apartheid Israel! #istandwithilhan.”

On March 7, 2019, SJP UMD shared a group photo on Instagram of SJP activists with Eran Efrati, holding a Palestinian flag.

SJP UMD commented: “It was eye-opening and intriguing to hear from Eran Efrati about the deadly exchange between US Police forces and the Israeli Defense Forces! #freepalestine.”

Eran Efrati is an executive board member of Researching the Israeli American Alliance (RIAA) and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP)

RAIA, in partnership with JVP, produced the Deadly Exchange report, which claimed to reveal “the extent of massive training programs between U.S. law enforcement and Israeli police, military, and the Shin Bet.”

In 2017, JVP launched the “Deadly Exchange (DX)” campaign, which accused American Jewish organizations of promoting human rights abuses. JVP also released a video that blamed [00:04:04] U.S.-based Jewish organizations for violence that occurs against Black and Brown communities, immigrants and activists in the U.S.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.

JVP

JVP was founded in Berkeley, California in 1996, as an activist group with an emphasis on the “Jewish tradition” of peace, social justice and human rights. The organization is currently led by Rebecca Vilkomerson and its board members include Israel critics Naomi Klein, Judith Butler, Noam Chomsky and Tony Kushner.

JVP, which generally employs civil disobedience tactics to disrupt pro-Israel speakers and events, consists of American Jews and non-Jewish “allies” highly critical of Israeli policies. A staunch supporter of the BDS movement, JVP claims to aim its campaigns at companies that either support the Israeli military (Hewlett-Packard) or are active in the West Bank (SodaStream).

Although several Jewish groups critical of Israeli policies, like J Street and Partners for a Progressive Israel, make efforts to operate within the mainstream American Jewish community, JVP functions outside. The group is often criticized for serving as a tokenized Jewish voice for the pro-Palestinian camp and is widely regarded as the BDS movement’s “Jewish wing.”

JVP denies the notion of “Jewish peoplehood” and has even gone so far as to refer to its own Ashkenazi (Jews who spent the Diaspora in European countries) leadership as “white supremacy inside of JVP.”

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has accused JVP of being “the largest and most influential Jewish anti-Zionist group in the United States,” and said the group “exploits Jewish culture and rituals to reassure its own supporters that opposition to Israel not only does not contradict, but is actually consistent with, Jewish value.”

The ADL also claimed that “JVP consistently co-sponsors rallies to oppose Israeli military policy that are marked by signs and slogans  comparing Israel to Nazi Germany, demonizing Jews and voicing support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.”

According to the ADL website, JVP “uses its Jewish identity to shield the anti-Israel movement from allegations of anti-Semitism and provide it with a greater degree of legitimacy and credibility.”
