The profilee's activism occurred during an extended period of global antisemitism that began with the October 7, 2023, terror attacks, when Hamas murdered nearly 1,200 Israelis, injured thousands and kidnapped hundreds. Israel immediately launched a war against Hamas in Gaza.
As of November 2025, Nawal Rai’s LinkedIn profile said he was a self-employed photographer and was located in the New York City metropolitan area.

Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, also known as Al-Aqsa Storm, is the name Hamas used for their terror operation on October 7, 2023. It is a reference to the allegation that Jews “threaten” to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque, located on Jerusalem's Temple Mount, and has been a pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before Israel was founded in 1948.

An official WOL flyer for the event featured inverted red triangles at locations where WOL intended to stop and protest, including the Brooklyn Museum, where the Nova Exhibition was being held.
The inverted red triangle is a symbol showing support for Hamas and Palestinian terrorism. It was first used by Hamas during the October 7, 2023, Hamas terror attacks to signify an Israeli target.
The Supernova Music Festival massacre took place on October 7, 2023 near the Israel-Gaza border. Hamas terrorists invaded the area in vans and paragliders in the early morning hours, slaughtering over 360 unarmed young men and women and publicly desecrating their bodies. Numerous Israeli soldiers who arrived to defend the festival participants were gunned down as well.
Women and young girls were raped and murdered or mutilated in other ways. Forensic analysis of corpses showed evidence of torture as well. Hamas terrorists said they were given explicit orders to carry out these and other atrocities at the festival, including raping dead bodies.
