Al-Rawahi’s LinkedIn page also said he studied Mechanical Engineering at UMN from “2014 - 2018.”
Support for Terrorists
On October 15, 2015, Al-Rawahi shared a link to a Facebook post with photos of Basel Bessam Sidr lying dead on the floor. In October 2015, during the “Knife Intifada, Basel Bessam Sidr was shot while attempting to stab Israeli police officers in Jerusalem.
In October 2015, there was an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings, known as the “Knife Intifada,” was characterized by young Palestinians throughout the country stabbing and attempting to stab Israeli civilians.
On October 31, 2015, Al Rawahi shared a link on Facebook to an album shared by SJP UMN of activists at a “Silent Protest.”
The protest was organized by SJP UMN on October 30, 2015. The Facebook event page description said: “In light of the recent escalation of Israeli state violence against the Palestinian population, SJP will hold a silent protest.”
The description continued: “Zionist Israel's vicious occupation over the Palestinian people is in a critical moment with over 30 reported Palestinian deaths… We pay respects to the Palestinian martyrs executed by Israeli forces, and shed light on the ongoing illegal occupation and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.”
Spreading Hatred of Israel
On February 3, 2016, Al-Rawahi shared to Facebooka post that compared a Palestinian being shot with a Nazi shooting a Jew in a concentration camp. The post said: “No es en Alemania nazi, es Israel sionista en 2015 y Steven Spielberg no hará película de esto, pero el mundo debe verlo. [It's not in Nazi Germany, it's Zionist Israel in 2015, but Steven Spielberg won't make a movie out of this, but the world must see it.]”
On October 20, 2015, Al-Rawahi shared a post on Facebook by Against Israel Memes that read: “30 Little Known Facts About Israel:”
The post alleged: “2. Did you know that instead of sewing an insignia on clothing to distinguish race (like the Germans did to the Jews WW2), Palestinian license plates in Israel are color coded to distinguish Jews from non-Jews?”
The post also said: “29. Did you know that the Zionists have been trying to destroy Masjid al-Aqsa and the Dome of the Rock for the last 50 years by digging underground tunnels beneath the sites to weaken its foundation causing it to collapse? Renowned Israeli archeologists have confirmed there are no traces of the temple.”
The allegation that Jews “threaten” to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque has been a traditional pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before the existence of the modern Jewish state.
On July 19, 2014, Al-Rawahi wrote on Facebook: “Yesterday's protest. Supporting palestine.” The post featured photos from an anti-Israel protest. One photo featured Al-Rawahi holding a sign that read: “End the Siege #FREE PALESTINE.”
On July 11, 2014, Al-Rawahi shared a link on Facebook to a video, titled: “Israel & Palestine: A Very Short Introduction.”
Promoting Anti-Israel Agitators
On March 30, 2018, Al-Rawahi posted to Facebook a video taken at an anti-Israel protest. Al-Rawahi wrote: “In support of Palestine and the land day in Minnesota.💔 🇵🇸 #TheGreatReturnMarch."
The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.
On December 30, 2017, Al-Rawahi shared a video on Facebook praising Ahed Tamimi.
On July 28, 2014, during Israel’s Operation Protective Edge (OPE), Al-Rawahi wrote on Facebook: “Eid Mubarak to everybody, special congrats to our Heroes in Gaza for their resistance.”
Israel commenced OPE in July 2014 to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.
Support for BDS
In March 2016 and 2018, Al-Rawawi supported the UMN Divest campaign. The 2018 UMN Divest campaign launched a petition calling to “demand that the University of Minnesota Investment Committee and any other responsible bodies authorized to make investment decisions divest fully from the companies mentioned in the UMN Divest campaign.”
On February 25, 2018, SJP UMN shared to Instagram a post launching the UMN Divest 2018 campaign that said: “UMN Divest is back and this time we’re doing a campus wide referendum. March 5-7 all undergraduate and graduate students can vote ‘yes’ to divest.”
SJP UMN’s “explanation statement” in support of its proposed “campus-wide” referendum claimed that UMN had investments in companies “that violate human rights” and called on UMN to divest from G4S, Boeing and Raytheon and Elbit Systems for being “complicit in Israeli violations of Palestinian human rights, 2) maintaining and establishing private prisons and immigrant detention centers, or 3) violating Indigenous sovereignty.”
In March 2018, the divestment referendum reportedly was passed by the UMN “All Campus Elections Commission” and sent to the UMN Board of Regents for review.
It was reported that 6,567 people out of UMN’s 51,367 students who were eligible to vote on the referendum actually voted upon the divestment referendum, representing less than 13% of eligible voters.
The referendum reportedly passed by 217 votes, with a total of 3,392 voting "yes" and 3,175 voting "no" on divestment. The “yes” votes represented 6.18% of the eligible voters.
On March 11, 2018, the day SJP UMN announced on Instagram that the 2018 divestment referendum had passed, Al-Rawahi shared a link on Facebook to an UMN Divest statement praising the passing of the referendum.
On March 7, 2016, Al-Rawahi shared a video on Facebook, posted by SJP UMN, promoting UMN DIvest.
On February 15, 2016, SJP UMN launched UMN Divest, a campaign suggesting [00:01:53] Israel was like Apartheid South Africa and demanding [00:01:10] that the Minnesota Student Association (MSA) and UMN divest from all companies “complicit in the Israeli occupation of Palestine.”.
On February 16th, SJP UMN issued a press release claiming UMN’s divestment from four companies explicitly targeted by the campaign “would neutralize the University of Minnesota in this conflict [sic] …” and that “The call to divest is a response to the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.”
UMN’s Chief Investment Officer reportedly told The Minnesota Republic, a student-run newspaper at UMN, that the university had “no direct exposure” to the four companies highlighted by the UMN Divest campaign.
On March 8, 2016, the MSA voted [00:26:24] to strike the divestment resolution from the MSA agenda.
In April 2016, the MSA passed a heavily amended resolution that removed all references to Israel and any specific corporations. The amended resolution endorsed divestment generally from “corporations involved in human rights violations,” and from “companies profiting from human rights abuses and violations of international law.”
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
