Michael Bueckert
Overview
Michael Bueckert has spread incitement, defended the Hamas terror group and in 2022 he met groups designated as terrorist organizations. Bueckert has also promoted hatred of Israel. As of March 2023, Bueckert’s LinkedIn page said he had been the Vice President of anti-Israel group Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME), since June 2020.
Bueckert is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. In November 2022, Bueckert tweeted that he went to Ramallah to meet with BDS activists to “continue to build the movement for economic pressure against Israeli apartheid.”
Bueckert is a co-editor of the 2022 book: “Advocating for Palestine in Canada: Histories, Movements, Action.” He wrote a chapter in the same volume, titled: “Singled Out: South Africa, Israel and Accusations of Unfair Criticism.”
Bueckert’s LinkedIn said he received a PhD in sociology and political economy from Carleton University (Carleton) in 2020. He also graduated from Carleton with a master’s degree in political economy in 2013, and from Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) with a bachelor’s degree in international development studies in 2010.
As of March 2023, Bueckert’s LinkedIn said he was located in Montreal, Quebec.
Spreading Incitement
On May 9, 2021, Bueckert tweeted: “Urgent action tomorrow in Montreal for Palestine, following Israel’s attack on Al Aqsa and the imminent evictions in #SheikhJarrah.”In May 2021, Palestinian violence erupted in anticipation of an Israel High Court ruling on eviction proceedings concerning over 70 Palestinian tenants illegally residing in Jewish-owned properties in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.
On June 23, 2021, Bueckert tweeted: “Send an email to Canada’s politicians and diplomats and tell them that sanctions are needed to stop Israel's ethnic cleansing in #SheikhJarrah and #Silwan
.”Jewish ownership claims to lands in Silwan, a Jerusalem neighborhood also known as Shiloach, have been frequently met with Palestinian violence against Israelis who sought to reclaim their property rights.
On May 29, 2022, Bueckert tweeted: “...Israeli forces restricted access to Al-Aqsa mosque and then assaulted worshippers, all to allow for 2,600 far-right Israeli settlers to storm the compound.”
Defending Terrorists (Hamas)
On May 22, 2018, Bueckert tweeted about Canadian opposition leader Andrew Scheer’s condemnation of Hamas’s leading role at violent protests in Gaza.Bueckert wrote: “I’m glad that Andrew is rightly speaking out against criticizing Israel for shooting protestors and journalists and doctors. After all, Hamas was armed with ‘weapons of terror’ like... children... and disabled civilians... what were they supposed to do?”
On May 15, 2018, Bueckert tweeted: “Hamas =/= 35,000 marching Palestinians.”
On May 16, 2018, a Hamas senior official, Salah al-Bardawil, stated that 50 out of 62 protesters killed during the May 14 Gaza border protest were Hamas operatives. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) also claimed that three of its members were killed at the same protest.
On July 14, 2014, Bueckert tweeted: “When you target ‘civilian institutions with suspected Hamas ties’ can you really accuse Hamas of using human shields?...”
Throughout the summer of 2014 — during Operation Protective Edge (OPE) — Hamas's deployment of human shields was extensively documented and publicized. Hamas encouraged Gazans to act as human shields to frustrate Israeli efforts to avoid civilian casualties in Gaza.
Israel commenced OPE in July 2014 to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.
Meeting With Groups Designated as Terrorists (PFLP)
On November 12, 2022, Bueckert tweeted: “Leaving Ben-Gurion after meeting human rights groups in Palestine-Israel (incl @DCIPalestine & @Addameer) I was accused by a security agent of meeting with ‘PFLP’ and was given a warning that doing so could affect re-entry. A clear threat against meeting human rights defenders.”In October 2021, the two groups Bueckert met with were on a list of six Palestinian groups that Israel’s Ministry of Defense declared to be “terror organizations” operating “as an arm” of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror group. The NGOs were accused of funneling donor aid to militants and employing senior PFLP members, “including activists involved in terror activity.”
Addameer is an NGO that advocates on behalf of prisoners held in Israeli jail, including many terrorists such as Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) recruiters Mohammad Allan and Khader Adnan. Addameer’s senior leadership includes [pp. 29-35] senior Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorists like Khalida Jarrar, whom Addameer also advocates for. In 2021, Israel officially designated Addameer as a terror organization.
Defense for Children International-Palestine (DCI-P) is a Ramallah-based, non-governmental organization, whose stated goal is to promote Palestinian children’s rights. In 2018, Citibank and Arab Bank withdrew their services from DCI-P due to its close ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror group. DCI-P board members have included current or former convicted PFLP terrorists. DCI-P General Assembly President Nassar Ibrahim co-authored a book, in which he wrote: “Every checkpoint, every soldier and every settler are legitimate targets in the struggle for freedom.”
On October 31, 2022, Bueckert posted tweets with photos of him meeting with leaders of Addameer and DCI-P.
Bueckert has also shown support for the groups in multiple tweets since their designation as terror organizations in 2021.
Hatred of Israel
On April 4, 2023, Bueckert tweeted about a CJPME event “exposing the truth about the ongoing Nakba & supporting the right of return for Palestinian refugees.”The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.
The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel. International law mandates no absolute right of return and UN Resolution 194, which defined principles for “refugees wishing to return to their homes,” was unanimously rejected by Arab nations following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
On December 21, 2022, Bueckert tweeted: “Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau must immediately expel Israel’s ambassador and prove that Canada doesn’t hold ‘shared values’ with apartheid and a regime of Jewish supremacy…”
On November 10, 2022, Bueckert tweeted, referring to Israel’s security barrier: “Graffiti on the apartheid wall in Bethlehem.”
Israel’s security barrier, 97 percent of which is a low chain-link barrier, was built as a deterrent to Palestinian terror attacks. The concrete portions of the fence were built in response to Palestinian sniper attacks.
On June 1, 2022, Bueckert tweeted about the release of the book he co-edited, titled: “Advocating for Palestine in Canada: Histories, Movements, Action.” In a tweet in the thread, he wrote: “Also in this book: … @SherylNestel disentangles the connections between Zionism, racism, and European Jewish whiteness;”
Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.
On May 29, 2022, Bueckert tweeted: “Help @CJPME extend our reach and challenge the undue influence of the pro-Israel lobby in Canada
.”On November 19, 2021, Bueckert tweeted: “A reminder that ‘From the river to the sea’ is a rejoinder to the fragmentation of Palestinian land and people by Israeli occupation and discrimination.’”
“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is a chant calling to dismantle the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state.
On September 21, 2021, Bueckert tweeted the claim that Israel practices “settler-colonialism.”
On January 4, 2021, Bueckert tweeted: “The Israel lobby is so used to being able to bully politicians into silence that it is flummoxed when they don't comply…#ApartheidState.”
On March 31, 2018, Bueckert tweeted: “Propaganda alert: here are some of the social media ‘missions’ orchestrated by Israel’s anti-BDS app to defend the shooting of unarmed protestors and blaming it on Hamas #BDS #Gaza #GreatReturnMarch.”
Most of the Gazans who died between March 30 and April 6, 2018, were identified as terror operatives who were killed while carrying out terrorist attacks, rioting against IDF forces or attempting to breach the border fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip.
Promoting BDS
On September 9, 2020, following the signing of the “Abraham Accords,” Bueckert published an article in Canadian Dimension, titled: “Canada is wrong to welcome the UAE-Israel deal.”In the article, he wrote: “Instead of easing diplomatic restrictions on Israel, the international community should be imposing economic and diplomatic sanctions on Israel as an incentive to dismantle the occupation…”
On August 13, 2020, the United States, Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) agreed to a joint statement referred to as the “Abraham Accords” in which the UAE consented to formally normalize its relationship with Israel.
On October 17, 2017, Bueckert tweeted: “BDS is led by civil society, not political parties. Fateh is believed to secretly support for it, Hamas has recently expressed support.”
In August 2016, BDS leader Ilan Pappé admitted that BDS was not initiated by a “call” from Palestinian civil society; rather, it was initiated by a small number of radical anti-Israel extremists.
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
