Mariam Saleh

Overview

Mariam Saleh has expressed support for terrorists and spread hatred of Israel on campus as an activist with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at DePaul University (DePaul) in 2018, 2016 and 2015

Saleh is a supporter of Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

As of March 2019, Saleh’s LinkedIn Page page said she studied “Health Professions and Related Clinical Sciences” at DePaul from “2014 — 2018” and worked as a Neuroendocrinology Research assistant at Monsignor Environmental Science and Chemistry Building at DePaul from “September 2016 to present.”

Saleh’s LinkedIn Page page also said she was a Mentor from Jan 2014 —Present” with Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF). PCRF has been financially linked with the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development and the Global Relief Foundation, both of which were shut down by the United States government for funneling donations to terrorist organizations.

Saleh’s LinkedIn Page page said she was the Project Coordinator/Organizer for United 4 Humanity from Jun 2017 - Sep 2017, based in Hebron.

Support for Terrorists

On January 28, 2016, Saleh was featured in a photo posted by SJP DePaul with SJP Depaul activists, holding a sign that read: “We stand with WOMEN. W stand with PALESTINIANS. We stand with RASMEA ODEH.”

Odeh was a key military operative [00:02:08]with the terrorist group the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 1969, Odeh masterminded a PFLP bombing that killed two college students in a Jerusalem supermarket. Odeh also attempted to bomb the British consulate.

Odeh confessed, in a highly detailed account, the day following her arrest. In a 2004 documentary, one of Odeh’s co-conspirators directly implicated [00:10:53] Odeh as the mastermind.

In 1970, an Israeli court tried and convicted Odeh for her involvement in both bombings and sentenced her to life imprisonment. However, Odeh was released 10 years later, in a prisoner swap and emigrated to the United States.

On November 10, 2014, a Michigan federal jury convicted Odeh for immigration fraud because she failed to disclose her prior conviction and life sentence on her immigration application. On March 12, 2015, she was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

In 2017, after an appeal and a lengthy court battle, Odeh admitted to immigration fraud, was stripped of her U.S. citizenship, deported to Jordan and banned from re-entering the U.S.

On the same day, Saleh was featured in a photo posted by SJP DePaul with SJP Depaul activists, holding the sign supporting Odeh again. Other activists in the photo held a sign calling to “FREE ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS.”

On May 11, 2017, Saleh shared a photo of herself on Facebook with Rasmea Odeh. Saleh wrote: “Over 1,600 Palestinian political prisoners are on a hunger strike in Israeli prisons, and are only being given salt water.

Saleh continued: “They undergo bottomless torture and detainment in prisons without charge or trial, a lot of them being children. And Rasmea Odeh having been one herself.”

Saleh concluded: “I stand with political prisoners hungry for freedom. #HungerStrike #DignityStrike36 #69YearsofNakba#FreePalestine.”

“Dignity Strike” refers to a hunger strike initiated by Marwan Barghouti on April 16, 2017. More than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners participated in the strike – most them also convicted for acts of terrorism. Barghouti headed the Palestinian Authority (PA) terrorist Tanzim force and founded the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. He was sentenced to five consecutive life terms by an Israeli civilian court for some of his crimes, including his role in the Sbarro Cafe bombing

On October 13, 2015, Saleh wrote on Facebook: “Why I can't sleep peacefully at night. I am restless wondering how many more Palestinians must be murdered before we realize we have wronged in supporting Israeli apartheid? Before Palestine is FREE? Wake up America.#FreePalestine #BDS #IsraeliApartheid #Peace #StandUpForHumanity.” The post featured a photo of Marah Al-Bakri after she was shot.

In October 2015, 16-year-old Marah Al-Bakri (or Marah Bakir) stabbed an Israeli border police officer and tried to grab his weapon before she was shot.

Also on October 13, 2015, Saleh shared a video of Ahmad Manasra lying on the floor.

Ahmed Manasra (sometimes spelled Mansara) and his 15-year-old cousin Hassan went on a stabbing spree in Jerusalem on October 12, 2015, during the Knife Intifada. They critically wounded a 13-year-old boy and moderately wounded a 25-year-old man. The spree ended when police shot Hassan and a passing motorist hit Ahmed. Ahmed was taken to an Israeli hospital. He admitted to investigators: “I went there to stab Jews.” He was later tried and convicted on two counts of attempted murder.

Saleh wrote in response to the video: “WHEN are we going to open our eyes as a society and realize that there is nothing ‘democratic’ about Israel? Do we not condemn the actions of white settlers first coming to America- wiping out millions of Native Americans- on this day in 1492? Do we not condemn the actions of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis circa WW1/WW2? How can we then ignore the millions of Palestinian lives- mothers, fathers, children- unlawfully taken away each and every day by the Israeli government?”

Spreading Hatred of Israel

On July 30, 2018, Saleh wrote on Facebook: “Today, following the release of 16 year old #AhedTamimi after 8 months of being tortured in Israeli prison, I hope that as you rejoice you’re also reminded of thousands of other child prisoners in occupied Palestine whose resistance remains internationally unnoticed.”

Ahed Tamimi has a long history of physically attacking Israeli soldiers. Tamimi is the daughter of Bassem Tamimi, who is known for exploiting young children as political props in staged confrontations with Israeli soldiers.

On July 23, 2018, Saleh shared a photo on Facebook of herself with Bassem Tamimi.

Bassem Tamimi has exploited young children as political props in staged confrontations with Israeli soldiers. In 2011, he was jailed for organizing violent rallies and inciting minors to commit violent crimes such as rock-throwing.

Tamimi’s United States visa was revoked in 2015, for his failure to disclose his prior arrest and conviction. Prior to the revocation of his U.S. visa, Tamimi delivered a controversial presentation to third-graders in Ithaca, New York. The presentation was geared to foster hatred of Israel and Tamimi concluded by encouraging [00:11:29] the children to become “freedom fighters for Palestine.”

On June 20, 2018, SJP DePaul shared on Facebook photos featuring Saleh with SJP DePaul activists taken at Israeli Apartheid Week 2018.

Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is presented internationally as a “series of events that seeks to raise awareness of…Israel’s settler-colonial project and apartheid system over the Palestinian people.” One of its goals is to build support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. IAW has been renamed Palestine Awareness Week.

On June 20, 2018, SJP DePaul posted a photo on Facebook, taken of a display board, erected as part of their IAW, which equated Israel with Apartheid South Africa, by juxtaposing a 1989 “Black South African Prisoners...Hunger strike Against Apartheid” with a 2012 Palestinian “Prisoners Hunger strike.”

The 2012 prisoners’ hunger strike included convicted terrorists such as Tha'er Halahleh and Bilal Diab —  both members of the terror group Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

Also participating was Hamas military commander, Abdullah al-Barghouti who was sentenced to serve 67 life sentences for his significant role in multiple terrorist attacks, including the Sbarro Cafe Bombing of 2001, which murdered 15 people and wounded more than 120.

Another hunger striker was Palestinian terrorist Samer Issawi — who received a 26 year prison sentence for shooting at Hebrew University students and Israeli police in 2002, as well as for manufacturing and distributing pipe bombs.

Also among the 2000 Palestinian hunger strikers was Khader Adnan, a senior member of PIJ. A 2007 YouTube video showed Adnan praising and encouraging suicide bombings: “Who among you will carry the next explosive belt? Who among you will fire the next bullets? Who among you will have his body parts blown all over?”

Also on June 20, 2018, SJP DePaul shared photos on Facebook that featured a mock apartheid wall, erected on campus as part of IAW. Text written on the wall said: “END ISRAELI APARTHEID.”

On May 15, 2018, Saleh wrote on Facebook: “I haven't heard from my family or friends in Palestine today, which is unusual. Not a single word. Silence. Tell me what there is to say though, when the genocide of your people ruthlessly continues before your eyes, as Americans passively follow misconstrued headlines in their social media feeds?”

Saleh continued: “America can continue to help Israel forcibly displace Palestinians from their homes. Murder innocents at checkpoints. Mass incarcerate youth. Teargas babies to death. Kill and injure thousands peacefully protesting the US embassy move to Jerusalem in #Gaza. But it can’t strip us of the flame of resistance integral to our existence.”

On September 21, 2017, Saleh shared a Facebook post, commenting on Comedian Conan O'Brien's visit to Israel, Saleh wrote: “He became another celebrity to whitewash Israel's continual colonial crimes of segregation and genocide.”

On November 3, 2016, Saleh wrote on Facebook: “...on this grim day in 1917, the Balfour Declaration was created. A British colonizer unlawfully signed the land of #Palestine over to Zionists. Following the declaration came an unthinkable amount of stolen land, genocide, and cultural erasure.”

On May 13, 2016, Saleh shared a photo of herself with an anti-Israel activist at a protest holding a sign that read: “YOU ARE CELEBRATING APARTHEID.” Saleh wrote: “Because 750,000 Palestinians having been forced to leave their homeland, countless youth continuing to be imprisoned and tortured without indictment, and being segregated, silenced, and mass murdered is nothing to celebrate. Since when do we throw parties for genocide? #IsraeliApartheid #SilenceIsCompliance #Nakba.”

On March 20, 2016, Saleh wrote on Facebook: “While waiting at a checkpoint a strange feeling passed over me as I realized it was the same one where I witnessed 2 boys blindfolded and shot to death, two and a half years ago by Israeli forces. And yesterday when I spotted a little boy blindfolded up against the wall by Israeli settlers.. I knew exactly what was to come. He was shot to death- and they made us watch. Conveniently confiscated our phones and belongings beforehand.. like every time."

On December 3, 2015, Saleh wrote on Facebook: “In case there is still confusion on who is doing a majority of the killing in Syria. It's important we understand roughly 90% of civilians are killed by the Assad regime in government. Not the FSA. Most especially, not even ISIS/ISIL…”

Saleh continued: “The same applies for misconceptions in Palestine. No radical group that exists has done a minuscule fraction of killing when compared to the heinous atrocities and amount of lives taken every day by the Israeli government. Take away: real terrorists are often in suits and government uniforms.”

On November 29, 2015, Saleh wrote on Facebook: “In honor of International #PalestinianSolidarityDay I choose to share a moment with Dr. Mads Gilbert kissing a young Palestinian boy whose life was among the thousands unlawfully taken by Israel during one of the deadliest attacks on Gaza last summer, Al-Shifa Hospital among the many places bombed to rubble. I strive to be him. One of the few true heroes of our time ❤️<3.” The post featured a photo of Dr. Mads Gilbert.

Gilbert has been banned indefinitely from entering Gaza through Israel because of his connections to the Hamas leadership.

In 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2014 Gilbert was stationed at a hospital that served as a Hamas command center and rocket launching site. During that time he acted as a propagandist for the Hamas government in Gaza.

In 2001, following al Qaeda's September 11 terrorist attacks, Gilbert expressed support for the terror acts as a “legitimate response.” In December of 2009, Gilbert was accused of faking resuscitation on a dead child in Gaza for dramatic effect for a CNN video.

Support for BDS

On May 29, 2018, Saleh wrote on Facebook: “Roseanne gets canceled + Shakira cancels Israel = Happy Tuesday ✊🏽💃🏽.”

On March 17, 2018, Saleh wrote on Facebook: “Witnessing physical proof that the international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement keeps growing strong was empowering beyond the torture of their checkpoints and lack of humanity.”

On November 8, 2016, Saleh wrote on Facebook: “Solidarity with UofM students, because nothing makes me happier than seeing divestment pass at other universities nationwide. Working to divest from corporations that support illegal human rights violations in occupied Palestine is every student's moral obligation. ✊🏽 #UMDivest ✌🏽️ #FreePalestine 🇵🇸💚.”

On April 13, 2016, Saleh wrote on Facebook: “At approximately 9:33 PM The University of Chicago's College Council voted 8-4 in favor of divesting from companies that help fund Israeli apartheid, and support the illegal military occupation and genocide of Palestinians. Words can't express how proud I am to be human tonight. Welcome to the revolution, U of C!”

The post featured a photo of SJP U of C activists following the vote on the BDS resolution, UofC Divest.

On March 28, 2016, a coalition of organizations, including Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) Chicago (JVP UChicago) and SJP U of C, launched the ‪‎UofC Divest‬ campaign. The campaign called on U of C’s College Council to pass a resolution urging the university’s divestment from targeted companies doing business with Israel.

On April 14, 2016, two-weeks after the UofC Divest campaign’s launch, the College Council reportedly passed the resolution in an 8-4-3 vote.

On March 24, 2015, Saleh shared a graphic on Facebook promoting the #DEPAUL DIVEST campaign organized by SJP DePaul. Saleh wrote: “‘When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty’ #ExistenceIsResistance #FreePalestine For more info on the campaign, visit: http://www.dpudivests.org/”

The campaign called for DePaul to divest from “divest from corporations” that do business with Israel and reportedly the “vote to divest passed 1,575 to 1,333” in 2014.

SJP DePaul - Supporting Terrorists

On September 29, 2017, SJP DePaul shared a group photo on Instagram of SJP activists with Rasmea Odeh.

SJP DePaul wrote on the post: “The other day we said goodbye (or see you soon) to Rasmea Odeh. Thank you for being an inspiration, a mother, and always smiling with your fist up high. Reminding us that wherever we land in life we should continue to resist & fight for justice in Palestine!”

On May 9, 2017, SJP DePaul shared a video on Facebook of SJP DePaul activists participating in the Saltwater Challenge.

The “Saltwater Challenge” was held in solidarity with hunger-striking Palestinian prison inmates convicted of terrorism. The strike was initiated by Marwan Barghouti, who was serving five consecutive life sentences for his role in suicide bombings that killed five Israelis during the second intifada. Aarab Barghouti, the son of Marwan Barghouti, launched the "Saltwater Challenge."

SJP DePaul - Support for BDS

On February 25, 2019, SJP DePaul shared a video on Facebook titled: “DePaul Students Protest Anti-BDS Legislation.”

The post featured a video of SJP DePaul activists on campus opposing  [00:00:06] the Congressional bill titled S.1 - Strengthening America's Security in the Middle East Act of 2019. SJP DePaul activists lined up, with duct tape covering their mouths, holding [00:00:20] various signs.

One activist held [00:00:37] a sign, referring to the Israeli Hummus brand, Sabra, that read: “SABRA IS MADE WITH PALESTINIAN BLOOD.”

Another activist held [00:00:44] a sign that read: “SJP DePaul stands with BDS…”

SJP DePaul - Spreading Anti-Israel Propaganda

On February 19, 2019, SJP DePaul shared a statement on Instagram by SJP at the University of Chicago (UofC) in support of Ilhan Omar, and commented: “Students for Justice in Palestine Chicago is proud to support Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar in her brave and frank callout of the Israel lobby and its attempts to purchase American support for the occupation.”

Ilhan Omar was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018. In February 2019, top Congressional leaders denounced Omar for tweeting anti-Semitic remarks.Omar has demonized Israel and endorsed BDS. In July 2019, Omar introduced a pro-BDS resolution in the U.S. Congress, which she described as “an opportunity for us to explain why it is we support…the BDS movement.”

On September 7, 2018, SJP DePaul shared a photo on Facebook of SJP activists manning a table with a banner that read “END ISRAELI APARTHEID” at an event called the “involvement fair.” The activists were promoting several books at the table, including “The Israel Lobby,” by John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt.

The book decries the influence of “the Israeli lobby” and repeats an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory about Jewish control over foreign governments.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
