Maria Remon-Sanchez

Overview

Maria Remon-Sanchez participated in a Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement hunger strike in early 2024. She has also spread an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory, promoted hatred of America and engaged in anti-Israel activism.

Remon-Sanchez’s activism took place during Israel’s war against Hamas terrorists. Israel launched the war, called called “Swords of Iron,” after a series of Hamas terror attacks and war crimes against Israeli civilians, including mass murder, torture, rape, beheadings and kidnappings. The atrocities were executed on October 7, 2023, and left approximately 1,200 Israelis dead, hundreds kidnapped and thousands wounded.

Hamas has been designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S., Canada, European Union, Israel and other countries. Founded in 1987, it has killed thousands of Israeli civilians through mass shootings and suicide bombings. Hamas has also kidnapped children, families and the elderly and held them hostage in Gaza. It has desecrated [slide 7] dead bodies and launched numerous rocket attacks against Israeli civilians.

In March 2024, Remon-Sanchez’s bio on her since-deleted Threads account said she was a student at the University of South Florida (USF). USF is located in Florida, with campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota.

As of July 2024, Remon-Sanchez’s Substack bio said she was “a freshman college student studying political science in Tampa, Florida.” In June 2024, her since-deleted Instagram bio said she was slated to graduate in 2027.

BDS Hunger Strike during Israel’s War against Hamas

On March 4, 2024, Remon-Sanchez was featured [slide 4] in a USF Instagram post speaking about an upcoming hunger strike, where she said [00:00:01]: “The university’s administration and [USF president] Rhea Law are complicit in the ongoing genocide of Palestinians. They refuse to even denounce Israel’s crimes, much less stop profiting from them.”

Remon-Sanchez further said [00:00:19]: “The Israeli government has dumped millions into making the world forget the Nakba, when Israel killed or displaced 80 percent of the Palestinian population and hiding their ongoing massacre…Israel is starving Gaza. While they hunger we will hunger also. We not only hunger for food, we hunger for justice.”

The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.

On March 5, 2024, anti-Israel activists held a rally on the USF campus, during which they marched while chanting [00:00:14]: “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free!”

“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free” is a chant used [00:02:47] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state. In April 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning the chant as antisemitic.

On March 17, 2024, 18 anti-Israel activists at USF reportedly initiated “an indefinite hunger strike beginning Monday, March 18.” The activists demanded that USF divest from companies doing business in Israel to stop what they claimed was a “GENOCIDE” happening in Gaza. USF officials have said that the school invests with fund managers and not with specific companies.

Anti-Israel activists planned additional protests during their hunger strike, including a “March for Gaza” and several “sit-in” and “die-in” events on campus.

On April 3, 2024, USF Hunger Strike for Palestine changed [slide 5] its name to USF Divest Coalition.

On the same day, USF Divest Coalition posted [slides 2] on Instagram that it was ending the hunger strike due to“multiple hospitalizations” and “fatal health warnings.” They also wrote [slide 3] that they will be “helping organize 4 more hunger strikers on campuses…”

Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theory

On June 18, 2024, Remon-Sanchez posted on her Instagram Stories a post that read: “Mind blowing - the PIJ is literally protecting Israeli hostages from the IOF.”

Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) is a terror group “whose objective is the destruction of the State of Israel and the establishment of a sovereign, Islamic Palestinian state.” PIJ is backed by Iran and has killed dozens of Israelis in suicide bombings and other attacks.

“Israeli Occupation Forces,” or “IOF,” is a derogatory name for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) used by anti-Israel activists to demonize Israel’s army.

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, approximately 2,900 heavily armed Hamas terrorists breached Israel’s border with Gaza. They executed numerous war crimes on civilians, including mass murder, beheadings of children, rape of men and women, torture, kidnappings and mutilation. Hamas broadcast videos of their butchery on social media, often to victims’ accounts for families to see. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” As of November 10, 2023, approximately 1,200 Israelis, the vast majority of them civilians, were murdered during the attacks. Hamas kidnapped 242 Israelis, including at least 30 children. At least 3,500 people were wounded, many severely.

A terrorist detained by Israel admitted he raped an Israeli woman when he broke into a kibbutz house during the October 7, 2023 attack. In March 2024, a former hostage of Hamas publicly stated she was sexually abused and tortured while in captivity.

For more information on the October 7, 2023 terror attacks, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.

Hatred of America

On March 4, 2024, Remon-Sanchez tweeted: “Good job (I hope you kill yourself),” and included a graphic showing rockets and two loaves of bread raining from the sky onto city ruins.

Remon-Sanchez’s tweet was in response to another tweet by U.S. president Joe Biden, referring to U.S. humanitarian aid to Gaza, that read: “In addition to the United States’ expansion of aid deliveries by air, land, and sea, we’re continuing to push hard for more trucks and routes to get more aid to people…”

Anti-Israel Activism

On April 23, 2024, Remon-Sanchez was featured in an Instagram video speaking at an anti-Israel protest titled: “EMERGENCY PROTEST / SAY NO TO GENOCIDE JOE,” in Tampa, Florida.

At the rally, Remon-Sanchez said [00:00:01], referring to U.S. president Joe Biden: “He continues saying he feels sorry for the people affected by the conflict. But they refuse to call it what it is, a genocide…This is what him, the president of the United States of America, is supporting. He is providing money for weapons and technology that the State of Israel using to starve children like Yazan. I am greatly disappointed. I hope that on the Day of Judgment, God gives him as much mercy as he did to the Palestinian children.”

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
