Layalie AbuOleim

Overview

Layalie AbuOleim was an officer of a Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter that showed support for Hamas terrorists after the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel where terrorists murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis.

AbuOleim also spread hatred of Israel in her SJP activism in May 2023.

In August 2023, Layalie AbuOleim was listed [slide 8] as an event coordinator for the SJP chapter at the University of South Florida (SJP USF). The group described her on their Instagram account as a member of the “Fall 2023 Executive Board!” USF is located in Tampa, Florida.

As of September 2024, AbuOleim's LinkedIn profile said she was studying computer engineering at USF, slated to graduate in 2026.

Support for Hamas Terrorists

On October 18, 2023, during AbuOleim’s tenure on the SJP USF executive board, the group posted on Instagram an “Official Statement” showing support for Hamas terrorism.

The SJP USF statement said: “On behalf of the Students for Justice in Palestine at the University of South Florida, we stand in full solidarity with the Palestinian resistance against more than 75 years of apartheid. We would like to address that our organization promotes peace and condemns all forms of violence.”

Among anti-Israel activists, the term “resistance” is a euphemism for terrorism and is used to glorify and encourage anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence.

The modern State of Israel was founded 76 years earlier, in 1948.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis, kidnapped hundreds and wounded thousands. War crimes included mass rape and torture. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” For more information, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.

Hamas has been designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S., Canada, European Union, Israel and other countries. Founded in 1987, it has killed thousands of Israeli civilians through mass shootings and suicide bombings. Hamas has also kidnapped children, families and the elderly and held them hostage in Gaza. It has desecrated [slide 7] dead bodies and launched numerous rocket attacks against Israeli civilians.

Hatred of Israel

AbuOleim was featured [slide 1] in a May 15, 2023 photo posted on Instagram by the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), which describes itself as “a revolutionary Marxist organization.” She appeared in the photo participating in a May 13, 2023, anti-Israel event co-hosted by SJP USF, PSL and three other local activist groups. The event was titled: “NAKBA 75.”

The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by drawing a comparison to the Holocaust, known in Hebrew as the Shoah, meaning “catastrophe.”

At the same protest, protesters held PSL signs that said [slide 5]: “FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA / PALESTINE WILL BE FREE!” and “WHEN PEOPLE ARE OCCUPIED / RESISTANCE IS JUSTIFIED!”

“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free” is a chant used [00:02:47] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state. In April 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning the chant as antisemitic.

At the same protest, one of the protesters held a sign that said: “END THE OCCUPATION / END ISRAEL / FREE PALESTINE.” Protesters also held PSL signs that said: “RETURN IS OUR RIGHT AND OUR DESTINY.”

The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel. International law mandates no absolute right of return and UN Resolution 194, which defined principles for “refugees wishing to return to their homes,” was unanimously rejected by Arab nations following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
