Lamiya Khandaker

Overview

Lamiya Khandaker has expressed support for a terrorist, demonized a pro-Israel professor at Connecticut College (ConnColl) and spread hatred of Israel.

Khandaker has expressed support for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Khandaker was the founder andpresident of a Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter at Brooklyn Technical High School from 2011-2013 and remained active in SJP while at ConnColl.

Khandaker’s LinkedIn page said she was the Chair of Diversity and Equity for ConnColl’s Student Government Association (SGA) from 2014 to 2015.

It also said she served as the coordinator for the Muslim Students Association (MSA) at ConnColl from January 2016.

As of April 2019, Khandaker’s LinkedIn page said she was a graduate research assistant and student at Harvard Divinity School, slated to graduate in 2019.

Khandaker’s LinkedIn page also said she graduated from ConnColl in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science/Government and Global Islamic Studies.

Expressing Support for a Terrorist

On March 25, 2017, Khandaker tweeted: “When You Come for Rasmea Odeh, You Come For All of Us http://jezebel.com/when-you-come- …#justice4rasmea.”

Odeh was a key military operative [00:02:08]with the terrorist group the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 1969, Odeh masterminded a PFLP bombing that killed two college students in a Jerusalem supermarket. Odeh also attempted to bomb the British consulate.

Odeh confessed, in a highly detailed account, the day following her arrest. In a 2004 documentary, one of Odeh’s co-conspirators directly implicated [00:10:53] Odeh as the mastermind.

In 1970, an Israeli court tried and convicted Odeh for her involvement in both bombings and sentenced her to life imprisonment. However, Odeh was released 10 years later, in a prisoner swap and emigrated to the United States.

On November 10, 2014, a Michigan federal jury convicted Odeh for immigration fraud because she failed to disclose her prior conviction and life sentence on her immigration application. On March 12, 2015, she was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

In 2017, after an appeal and a lengthy court battle, Odeh admitted to immigration fraud, was stripped of her U.S. citizenship, deported to Jordan and banned from re-entering the U.S.

Demonizing a pro-Israel Professor

In March 2015, Khandaker demonizedJewish ConnColl Professor Andrew Pessin for comments Pessin reportedly posted to Facebook in August 2014 during Israel’s Operation Protective Edge (OPE), against the terror group Hamas.

Israel commenced Operation Protective Edge (OPE) in July 2014, to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.

Pessin had reportedly described the situation in Gaza on Facebook as one in which  “a rabid pit bull is chained in a cage, regularly making mass efforts to escape.” In his post, Pessin reportedly compared Hamas to a pit bull.

At the time of Pessin’s post, Khandaker was the Chair of Diversity and Equity of ConnColls’s SGA. On February 18, 2015, Khandaker emailed Pessin, claiming that his post demeaned Palestinians.

Pessin reportedly responded, explaining that he had been referring only to Hamas. Pessin added that Khandaker had misunderstood his intent and he later deleted the post.

On March 3, 2015, Khandaker published a letter in the online edition of the student newspaper, the College Voice, titled: “Why Hate Speech is Not Free Speech in an ‘Inclusive Excellence’ Community,” where she accused Pessin of racism.

Khandaker’s letter was part of a campaign against Pessin, which reportedly led to him requesting and taking medical leave for the Spring semester following death threats to him and his family for his online comments.

As the campaign snowballed, other students published letters condemning Pessin and faculty and student statements were published on online university forums suggesting that Pessin was racist. An online petition against Pessin was initiated which called upon the university to disassociate itself from Pessin’s “racism.”

Spreading Hatred of Israel

On March 5, 2019, Khandaker tweeted: “The #Democrats in their hypocrisy of pro-human rights are despicable with their disgusting support for apartheid Israel. Vile attacks on a black Muslim refugee woman for speaking truth about the corrupt lobby system and #AIPAC. #IStandWithIlhanOmar Be consistent #Democrats.”

Ilhan Omar was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018. In February 2019, top Congressional leaders denounced Omar for tweeting anti-Semitic remarks.Omar has demonized Israel and endorsed BDS. In July 2019, Omar introduced a pro-BDS resolution in the U.S. Congress, which she described as “an opportunity for us to explain why it is we support…the BDS movement.”

On February 13, 2019, Khandaker posted to Facebook: “#IstandwithIlhanOmar
AIPAC, the ADL, Zionist Lobbies and the Israeli state use victimized narratives to perpetuate human rights abuses. Those who call out this truth will always be accused with baseless claims. #FreePalestine.”

On November 15, 2018, Khandaker tweeted: “#IStandwithIlhan for speaking truth and standing up for values of justice for Palestinian human rights and dignity. She will not be silenced by Zionist bullies. @IlhanMN.”

On January 18, 2018, Khandaker called Israel a genocidal regime “responsible for murdering and torturing women and children” on Twitter.

On December 21, 2017, Khandaker tweeted: “What's your definition of ‘the American people?’ White conservatives? Americans are protesting in all cities that Jerusalem does NOT belong to Israel. @nikkihaley.”

Khandaker’s tweet was in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

On December 27, 2016, Khandaker tweeted: “Prof of mine once compared Palestinians to dogs. He was right. #Israel is an abusive owner who treats people like dogs. #settlements.”

On the same date, Khandaker tweeted: “#Israel is a bully. What makes you think they would negotiate w/ people they dehumanize when they can't even comply with int'l law?#unvote.”

On August 1, 2014, Khandaker commented on Facebook defending Turkey’s Prime Minister Erdogan’s comparison of Israel with Hitler, saying: “Everything is anti semitic to people wtf. It's pissing me off.

On October 20, 2013, Khandaker posted on Facebook saying: “Nah girlfriend. Starbucks supports occupation and apartheid, go to a local cafe or Connecticut Muffin.”

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

MSA

The MSA was  established by members of the Muslim Brotherhood in January 1963 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with the goal of "spreading Islam as students in North America." A 2004 FBI investigation uncovered an internal Muslim Brotherhood document in which a brotherhood leader identified the MSA as "one of our organizations."

The MSA reportedly has “nearly 600 chapters” located in the United States and Canada, and is “the most visible and influential Islamic student organization in North America,” boasting conferences, special events, publications, websites and other activities.

The organization includes a number of previous chapter presidents with explicit links to terrorist groups. Included are al-Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki (Colorado State University), Somali al-Shabaab militant leader Omar Shafik Hammami (University of South Alabama) and Pakistani Taliban recruiter Ramy Zamzam of the MSA's Washington, D.C. council.
