Khalid Abu Dawas
Overview
Khalid Abu Dawas expressed support for terrorists, called for the destruction of the State of Israel, disrupted a pro-Israel event and spread hatred of Israel.He also glorified violent protesters, promoted the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and protested against the Birthright Jewish heritage tour.
Abu Dawas was reportedly the 2018 President of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at New York University (NYU) (NYU SJP) and was [00:19:30] a member of NYU SJP in 2017.
He was also affiliated with the Palestine Solidarity Alliance of Hunter College (Hunter PSA) in 2017 and 2018 and has been listed as a member of the Muslim Students Association (MSA) at NYU (NYU MSA) on the group’s website since September 2016.
As of July 2019, Abu Dawas’s LinkedIn page said he was “Founder of Dawas Media(s),” described on the page as “an all-encompassing consulting group for the modern entrepreneurs, artists, and brands [sic.].” His LinkedIn page also said he was a “Speaker. Artist. Public Figure.”
As of the same date, his LinkedIn page said Abu Dawas was the “Enrollment Manager” for Bhagavat Life in New York City, NY, described on their website as “a nonprofit based in New York's East Village” whose work “aims to connect holistic living to everyday life.”
His LinkedIn page also said he was pursuing a bachelor’s degree at NYU in “Global Liberal Studies, Concentrating in Contemporary Culture and Creative Production,” slated to graduate in 2020 and concurrently pursuinga master’s degree in Social and Cultural Analysis at NYU, slated to be completed in 2021.
Support for Terrorists
On February 28, 2019, Abu Dawas posted on Facebook: “PFLP member, Khalida Jarrar is finally free ☺️☺️☺️.”Khalida Jarrar is a senior member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror organization. She has reportedly been the head of the PFLP in the West Bank since 2016. In 2015, an Israeli military court sentenced Jarrar to 15 months in prison for calling to kidnap Israeli soldiers. Israel arrested Jarrar again in 2017 “on suspicion of involvement with terrorist activities and violent public disturbances.” In 2019, she was arrested by Israel with 50 other PFLP operatives following a deadly 2018 bombing attack.
On July 9, 2018, Abu Dawas posted a video to Facebook of Ghassan Kanafani. The video was captioned: “Ghassan Kanafani on ‘peace talks’ with Israel in 1970: ‘That's a conversation between the sword and the neck.’”
Kanafani was a leading member and spokesperson for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) during the terrorist organization’s early years. Kanafani announced the PFLP’s responsibility for the Lod Airport Massacre of May 1972 and was linked to the airport attackers. The attack killed 26 people and wounded 80 others.
On May 5, 2017, Abu Dawas led NYU SJP’s on-campus demonstration titled: “Here We Will Stay,” during which he expressed [00:01:32] solidarity with hunger strikingPalestinians in Israeli prisons and requested [00:01:37] that activists use the hashtag #dignitystrike to support the hunger-strikers.
“Dignity Strike” refers to a hunger strike initiated by Marwan Barghouti on April 16, 2017. More than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners participated in the strike – most them also convicted for acts of terrorism. Barghouti headed the Palestinian Authority (PA) terrorist Tanzim force and founded the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. He was sentenced to five consecutive life terms by an Israeli civilian court for some of his crimes, including his role in the Sbarro Cafe bombing.
Also at the demonstration, Abu Dawas led [00:00:04] the protestors in chanting: “Free, free Palestine" and[00:00:56] “From the river to the sea, from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”
“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is a chant calling to dismantle the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state.
Al-Awda co-founder, Abbas Hamideh, who has regularly spread anti-Semitism on his Twitter account, confirmed [00:02:52] that the chant is a call to eliminate Israel..
Calling for the Destruction of the State of Israel
On October 19, 2018 Abu Dawas wrote on Facebook:“...the harsh reality that Zionism and Israel have no right to exist because countries and ideologies shouldn’t have rights! But also because both Zionism and Israel are supremacist hindrances on global progress!#EndIsrael ☺️.”On September 7, 2018, Abu Dawas commented on a Facebook post: “The European Jews are supposed to go back to where they came from and the Arabs can live side by side in a sectarian Palestinian State...but since no one seems keen on the idea, they better get used to being governed by a Palestinian State.”
On May 16, 2018, Abu Dawas posted on Facebook: “Today, on the first day of fasting in the month of Ramadan, I will ask God to dissolve the state of Israel.”
Disrupting a Pro-Israel Event
On April 27, 2018, Abu Dawas reportedly participated in a demonstration against the annual “Rave in the Park” celebration held by Realize Israel, a pro-Israel club at NYU, to celebrate Israel’s Independence Day.NYU SJP organized a demonstration, titled: “Rally for Palestinian Right of Return,” to protest the pro-Israel event.
The Facebook description for NYU SJP’s event said: “Zionists at NYU celebrate 70 years of Israel's existence...We refuse to let such a disturbing public celebration of colonialism and apartheid on our campus and in our park go by without a response.”
Abu Dawas was quoted about the disruption in NYU’s school newspaper, the Washington Square News: “We’re not going to let them stand by and support Zionism... Our point is to make being Zionist uncomfortable on the NYU campus. They shouldn’t be comfortable because the ideology of Zionism is antithetical to Palestinian liberation and Palestinian sovereignty at its core.”
In another interview about the disruption with NYULocal, Abu Dawas called the counter-protest “peaceful” and said: “My goal is not to shake them, my goal is to let them know that I won’t be okay with them unapologetically advocating for a state that I believe is sanctioning and pushing forward apartheid...”
Two counter-protestors were reportedly arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and assault after grabbing [00:00:41] a microphone and an Israeli flag out of the hands of a student singing the Israeli national anthem, before shouting: “Free Palestine, end the occupation.”
Other counter-protesters stomped [00:00:10] on and wiped their feet on the Israeli flag.
Spreading Hatred of Israel
On May 9, 2019, Abu Dawas participated [00:00:07] in a “die-in,” hosted by NYU SJP, next to Realize Israel’s annual celebration of Israeli Independence Day. He also promoted the “die-in” on Facebook.As students celebrated at the Realize Israel event, Abu Dawas and other NYU SJP activists laid [00:01:37] on the ground and reportedly “held signs with the names of depopulated Palestinian villages to protest Israel’s expansion into the region.”
Abu Dawas later posted a video of the “die-in” on Facebook and wrote: “A reminder to let you all know that Zionism is colonial and deserves to be expelled from NYU’s acceptable discourse.”
On March 26, 2019, Abu Dawas posted on Facebook: “Gaza is getting bombed to pieces and NYU Zionists are complaining about how many rocket alerts people in Tel Abib are getting on their phones, despite having a state of the art missile protection system in comparison to the Palestinian land their country is flattening.”
A day earlier, Hamas fired multiple rockets from the Gaza strip, including one which landed in central Israel, injuring seven people.
On October 8, 2018, Abu Dawas posted on Facebook: “Israel is an apartheid state committing genocide and global erasure of indigenous people and if you feel any sympathy for the state of Israel and its supporters than you lack the mind to recognize genuine evil.”
On September 6, 2018, Abu Dawas wrote on Facebook: “Just heard that Realize Israel members said to other students that I make them ‘uncomfortable’ 🤷♂️ guess I achieved my goal of making Zionists unwelcome at NYU.”
On December 17, 2017, Abu Dawas shared a video on Facebook of a Palestinian protester, Ibrahim Abu Thuraya, who was killed during a violent “day of rage” protest on the Gaza border on December 14, 2017.
Abu Dawas’s Facebook post said: “You [Israel] are a barbaric, horrifying, and disgusting regime. Your military is a plague, and all who serve should be ashamed.”
Glorifying Violent Protesters
On November 6, 2018, Abu Dawas posted on Facebook: “Imagine protesting every Friday, and every Friday you watched at least one of your fellow protestors be shot and killed. Imagine every time you protested, government forces opened fire on you. Imagine every time you protested, you were tear gassed. This is the Great March of Return. #Gaza #Palestine.”Also, on November 6, 2018, Abu Dawas said on Facebook: “It is high time people in the United States start recognizing that the state of Israel, just during the March of Return, has murdered paramedics, disabled individuals, and countless children. In total, they have murdered 214 Palestinians, and wounded over 18,000. That means in the past ~7 months, the Israeli Occupation Forces have killed about 1 Palestinian every day. And yet, Palestinians continue to protest for their right to return. This is how you resist.”
On October 19, 2018, Abu Dawas posted to Facebook about increased security measures deployed by Israel on their border with Gaza in response to March of Return rioting.
Abu Dawas wrote: “I really hope Realize Israel does an event educating people on why their beloved state is deploying tanks and snipers against a civilian protest for economic freedom and an end to violence, or why their state is threatening to start another war, despite Hamas saying it doesn’t want one.”
On May 16, 2018, Abu Dawas posted on Facebook: “...I have watched, in the past few weeks, hundreds of my brothers and sisters be shot and killed...those around me...label us terrorists.”Abu Dawas also said that Gazans were being “massacred just a few miles away” from Israel.
On May 16, 2018, a Hamas senior official, Salah al-Bardawil, stated that 50 out of 62 protesters killed during the May 14 Gaza border protest were Hamas operatives. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) also claimed that three of its members were killed at the same protest.
His Facebook post continued: “I hope every Zionist on earth feels gut wrenching shame. There is nothing that could ever justifying the state of Israel. The state of Israel has created and instilled apartheid. The IDF is liable. You cannot be a ‘good’ soldier. If you wear their uniform you condone their killing. You are guilty. Every Zionist is liable. You are guilty. Remember that, when Palestinians take up residence in the ashes of your Promised Land…”
On May 14, 2018, Abu Dawas posted to Facebook a 2014 AP file photo of an Iranian Al Quds Day protest, where someone burned a large Israeli flag, commenting: “Down with Israel. Free Gaza. Free Palestine.InshAllah [If Allah wills it].”
The same day, Abu Dawas tweeted: “I will never rest. I will die trying. I will do anything to let my people return home. Today, bear witness to the most resilient people on Earth. #Palestine.”
Promoting BDS
On May 3, 2019, Abu Dawas posted a Newsweek article to Facebook, titled: “NYU Department of Social and Cultural Analysis ends official relationship with Tel Aviv Campus.”Abu Dawas commented: “Shout out to my BA/MA department let’s gooooo.” The article discussed an academic boycott resolution passed by NYU’s Department of Social and Cultural Analysis (SCA) at NYU on March 30, 2019.
On December 7, 2018, Abu Dawas wrote on Facebook: “SubhanAllah [God is Perfect], the Divestment resolution has passed at New York University. Allahuakbar. Allahuakbar. Allahuakbar [Allah is Great].”
The previous day, NYU’s Student Government Assembly (SGA) passed a BDS resolution co-authored and introduced by three student senators, Rose Asaf, Leen Dweik, and Bayan Abubakr, all of whom were reportedly members ofNYU SJP.
The resolution, titled: “Resolution on the Human Rights of Palestinians,” invoked the “three-fold” goals of the BDS movement, including “ending Israel’s occupation and colonization of all Arab lands” and claimed Israel practiced apartheid.
Protesting Birthright
On December 3, 2017, Abu Dawas was featured as a speaker at a Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) co-sponsored event, titled: “Boycott Birthright: Protest Birthright Gala & Sheldon Adelson,” outside the Birthright Israel offices in New York City.Birthright Israel is a heritage trip to Israel for Jewish young adults from across the world.
The event’s Facebook description alleged: “Birthright...serves an agenda of racism and exclusion championed by the Israeli government and out-of-touch donors like Adelson...We know that, after 50 years of occupation and 70 years since the Nakba, there’s nothing to celebrate.”
At the event, Abu Dawas said [00:00:39]: “When the IDF places an assault rifle against my chest, that is not the story you will hear at Birthright…”
He also claimed [00:21:56]: “The Birthright program does not tell you about IDF firing upon children, firing upon innocent civilians. It does not tell you about the Occupation and if it does, it will not educate you on its complexities. They will not tell you about 1948, they will not tell you about 1967 in its honesty; they will tell you that Israel is a great place to be, that it is somehow an equal State for everyone.”
NYU SJP Support for Anti-Israel Agitators
On March 13, 2019, NYU SJP posted to Facebook an image from a petition calling to “Disinvite Linda Sarsour” and wrote: “This is just a list of Islamophobes. As always, solidarity with Linda Sarsour!”On July 26, 2018, NYU SJP posted to Facebook a statement supporting Ahed Tamimi’s release from Israeli prison.
NYU SJP Supporting Violent Protestors
On March 30, 2018, SJP NYU co-hosted an event titled: “Emergency rally: solidarity with Gaza #GreatMarchofReturn.”Birthright Israel is a heritage trip to Israel for Jewish young adults from across the world.
The event’s Facebook description said: “We'll be outside Birthright’s gala to say loud and clear- Boycott Birthright, end the Gaza massacres and let Palestinian refugees return home!”
On April 6, 2018, SJP NYU co-hosted a “rally in support of the heroic Palestinians in Gaza and throughout historic Palestine participating in the #GreatReturnMarch and honor the martyrs who gave their lives fighting for liberation and return!”
Most of the Gazans who died between March 30 and April 6, 2018, were identified as terror operatives who were killed while carrying out terrorist attacks, rioting against IDF forces or attempting to breach the border fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip.
On May 19, 2018, NYU SJP co-sponsored an event titled: “70 years of Nakba - Remember, Resist, Return - Palestine.”
The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.
The event’s Facebook description said: “Monday, May 14, Israeli forces killed over 60 Palestinians in besieged Gaza and wounded thousands.”

On July 21, 2018, NYU SJP minimized the use of “flaming kites” by protesters on Twitter.
Since March 2018, Hamas’s “Kite Unit,” along with other March of Return participants, sent hundreds of kites that carried incendiary devices and IEDs (improvised explosive devices) across Israel’s border to terrorize Israelis. Multiple kites were marked with swastikas. These kites burned over 3500 acres of Israeli territory.
NYU SJP 2018 Divestment Campaign
On November 1, 2018, members of NYU SJP presented a divestment bill to the NYU Student Government Association (SGA), to further the agenda of the Boycott, Divestment Sanctions (BDS) movement.The resolution was co-authored by then-student senators and members of SJP, Rose Asaf, Leen Dweik and then-student senator Bayan Abubakr, who was reportedly a member ofNYU SJP.
The resolution demonized Israel, invoked the “threefold” goals of the BDS movement and was passed by the SGA on December 6, 2018, using a secret ballot. NYU’s administration opposed the BDS resolution.
NYU’s then-President Andrew Hamilton said: “‘A boycott of Israeli academics and institutions is contrary to our core principles of academic freedom, antithetical to the free exchange of ideas, and at odds with the University's position on this matter...and divestment from Israeli-related investments is not under consideration.’”
NYU SJP Promoting BDS
On April 15, 2019, NYU SJP hosted an event featuring a panel that included Omar Barghouti. The panel was moderated by Leen Dweik, then-President of NYU SJP.On November 19, 2018, NYU SJP wrote on Facebook: “When we fight, we win.BDS works” and attached an article in the post reporting the decision by Airbnb Inc. to remove listings in Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
On October 24. 2018, NYU SJP hosted a panel about BDS where anti-Israel Professor Jasbir Puar was listed among the panel of speakers. Puar is on the Advisory Board of the U.S. Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (USACBI) and applauded the American Studies Association (ASA)’s move for an Academic Boycott of Israeli universities.
NYU SJP hosted NYU Israel Apartheid Week (IAW) 2018, from April 15-21, 2018. The Facebook event description said: “IAW will be an opportunity to reflect on this history of resistance and further advance BDS campaigns for the continued growth and impact of the movement.”
On April 9, 2018, NYU SJP posted to Facebook: “We are proud to announce a coalition of 50 NYU student groups who have pledged to support the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement for Palestinian human rights by pledging not to spend NYU club funds on Israeli goods, to boycott pro-Israel groups at NYU and off campus, and to call on NYU to divest from companies that profit off the violation of Palestinian human rights.
SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
MSA
The MSA was established by members of the Muslim Brotherhood in January 1963 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with the goal of "spreading Islam as students in North America." A 2004 FBI investigation uncovered an internal Muslim Brotherhood document in which a brotherhood leader identified the MSA as "one of our organizations."
The MSA reportedly has “nearly 600 chapters” located in the United States and Canada, and is “the most visible and influential Islamic student organization in North America,” boasting conferences, special events, publications, websites and other activities.
The organization includes a number of previous chapter presidents with explicit links to terrorist groups. Included are al-Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki (Colorado State University), Somali al-Shabaab militant leader Omar Shafik Hammami (University of South Alabama) and Pakistani Taliban recruiter Ramy Zamzam of the MSA's Washington, D.C. council.
