Ju-Hyun Park’s Participation in the Pro-Hamas Encampment at the University of Toronto (UofT)and His Promotion of Martyrdom

Ju-Hyun Park, University of Toronto, participated in the pro-Hamas encampment at UofT in 2024

Ju-Hyun Park participated in the pro-Hamas encampment at UofT in 2024. Park has also shown support for terrorists and called for Israel’s destruction.

Park was featured in an Instagram photo participating in Toronto’s May 11, 2024, “Nakba Day” protest, which began in downtown Toronto and ended at the encampment.

Palestinians and anti-Israel activists commemorate the so-called “Nakba Day” on May 15, corresponding to the day following Israel’s declaration of statehood in 1948. Palestinians coined the term "nakba," Arabic for "catastrophe,” to draw a comparison with the Holocaust, known in Hebrew as the Shoah, meaning “catastrophe.”

On April 30, 2024, Park posted on X: “Support the encampments and take to the streets! Palestine is everywhere and so is the intifada.”

The term “intifada” translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection” and carries the connotation of terrorist violence, including suicide bombings, hijackings, shootings and stabbings.

UofT is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Pro-Hamas Encampment at the University of Toronto

On May 2, 2024, activists from the UofT Occupy for Palestine (Occupy UofT) group “stormed down” [00:00:24] the fencing around UofT’s Kings College Circle and set up a pro-Hamas encampment, which they called the “People’s Circle for Palestine.”

That day, Occupy UofT called on “community members to…help us defend our encampment” at an emergency rally in the evening. Protesters chanted [00:02:59] for “intifada” and celebrated “resistance” [00:02:45]. Both terms are calls for terrorism. The activists also chanted [00:01:28; 00:02:21] for Israel’s destruction multiple times.

One speaker, Nabil Jalbout, said [00:09:02]: “...we are not fighting for peace, we are fighting for liberation, because ‘peace’ is a white man's word.” Another speaker, Ahmad Jarrar Hajahmad, claimed [00:05:52]: “All these Israeli and Zionist entities fill all these politicians with money in their pockets…we already know who runs this system…”

Signs displayed at the encampment said: “LONG LIVE THE INTIFADA” and “LIBERATION FOR ALL REQUIRES RESISTANCE FROM ALL.”

On May 4, 2024, anti-Israel protesters at the encampment assaulted a Jewish man, punching him in the stomach as they forcibly took his Israeli flag. The attackers told the man [00:01:02]: “God bless the armed resistance,” and: “Go back to Europe!” They also reportedly called him “a “dirty Jew.”

Protesters “occupied” [00:00:17] the area from May to July 2024, despite UofT’s warning they were trespassing. The group said they would not leave until UofT divested from companies that “sustain Israeli apartheid, occupation and illegal settlement of Palestine” and terminated partnerships with Israeli academic institutions.

Following the October 7, 2023 massacre of nearly 1,200 Israelis, the inverted red triangle - 🔻- became a Hamas symbol. This symbol appeared on large signs at the encampment multiple times. Erin Mackey, one of the primary organizers, is openly pro-Hamas, having used the symbol in her activism. In addition, pro-Hamas marches that began in other parts of the city concluded at the encampment.

On July 3, 2024, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice issued an injunction at the request of UofT’s Governing Council, requiring students to clear the encampment. Occupy UofT dismantled the encampment and wrote [slides 5-6]: “We are just getting started…come fall, every incoming student will hear our message loud and clear…Whatever institution you have access to and influence over - you need to take this campaign there!” The statement concluded: “Long live the intifada.”

Background on Pro-Hamas Encampments

The encampment was one of over 140 pro-Hamas and anti-Israel college encampments set up in North America, and over 20 more globally, in the spring of 2024. The first began on April 17, 2024, at Columbia University. The encampments were unofficially known as the “student intifada,” borrowing a term associated with terrorist violence.

Protesters harassed Jewish students, blocked Jews from campus facilities and shouted anti-Semitic slogans. They occupied campus grounds, in many cases illegally, caused property damage, violently took over buildings, celebrated terrorism and promoted the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Activists set up encampments to oppose Israel’s right to wage war against the Hamas terror group following October 7, 2023, when Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 people, including 32 American and 8 Canadian citizens. Hamas also kidnapped 252 people, including 11 Americans and the bodies of 2 murdered Canadians. As of May 26, 2024, 125 hostages remained in Hamas captivity.

Ju-Hyun Park’s Promotion of Martyrdom

On May 25, 2024, BreakThrough News uploaded a video to YouTube featuring Ju-Hyun speaking at the People’s Conference for Palestine in Detroit, Michigan. The conference was co-organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM)

In the speech, Ju-Hyun said [00:44:52]: “When our hero, our teacher, Sana’ Daqqa told us that the choice we face is victory or death, that was no exaggeration. It's not only the choice we face as individuals but as all of humanity, a choice between liberation and extinction.”

Sana Daqqa is the wife of terrorist Walid Daqqa, who was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for reportedly having been part of a Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror cell that abducted and killed an Israeli soldier in 1984.

The PFLP is dedicated to the violent destruction of Israel. It is designated as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO) by the United States. The EU, Canada, the Gulf Cooperation Council, Australia and Israel also list it as a terror group due to its history of carrying out assassinations, suicide bombings, hijackings and multiple murders.

Ju-Hyun Park’s Support for Terrorists

On July 30, 2024, Park posted on X: “Glory to [Ismail] Haniyeh. zionism-imperialism can strike down a leader, but the resistance will never die.”

Ismail Haniyeh was the senior leader of terror group Hamas for 18 years. During this time, Hamas increased its rocket barrages on southern Israel and built more terror tunnels. Haniyeh was assassinated in Iran on July 31, 2024, during the Swords of Iron war, which Israel launched against Hamas in response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas atrocities.

Among anti-Israel activists, the term “resistance” is a euphemism for terrorism and is used to glorify and encourage anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence.

On June 9, 2024, Park posted on X, referring to Hamas’ terror attacks of October 7, 2023: “Liberals who condemn Hamas for choosing the path of armed struggle do not support Palestinian liberation. Liberation is not negotiated at a bargaining table. It does not follow a military surrender. It has to be taken.”

On October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis, kidnapped hundreds and wounded thousands. War crimes included mass rape and torture. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” For more information, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.

On May 25, 2024, Park posted on X: “Every day the resistance drives another nail into zionism’s coffin.”

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture. Zionism is a core part of the identity of most Jews.

On May 20, 2024, Park posted on X: “Iran has materially done more for Palestinian liberation and anti-imperialism than any elected US official…”

On April 19, 2024, Park posted on X, referring to North Korea: “I don’t think the DPRK’s historic, consistent support for Palestinian liberation or its steadfast, principled rejection of zionism casts a bad light on Palestine. I think it proves the DPRK is a moral leader on the international stage.”

Ju-Hyun Park’s Calling for Israel’s Destruction

On November 4, 2023, Park spoke [00:00:31] at the anti-Israel rally titled: “March on Washington for Palestine,” which was co-organized by the pro-terror activist group Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM).

In the speech, Park said [00:00:41]: “...we are here because we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Palestinian people…we have one struggle, the struggle against imperialism…Israel…will lose in Palestine!

Park ended the speech by leading [00:01:39] the chant: “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free! From the Sea to the River, Palestine will live forever!”

“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free,” is a chant used [00:02:52] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel.
