On May 1, 2024, during Israel's war against Hamas terrorists, Jamie Gauthier spoke to the press at the Penn encampment, saying [00:00:43]: "People should have the right to protest..."
Also on May 1, 2024, Jamie Gauthier posted on X: "Students have a right to peacefully protest and organize. Penn should not discipline those who exercise this right..."
On April 27, 2024, the Daily Pennsylvanian reported that Jamie Gauthier sent a staffer "to show her solidarity" to the encampment.
The staff member told the press: "It really warms my heart to see the depths of care that this community has been showing to communities across the globe. And the way that you care and stand up for Palestine makes me proud to be in the same lineage."
On April 25, 2024, anti-Israel activists from Penn, Temple University and Drexel University set up the "Gaza Solidarity Encampment" on the Penn campus to protest Israel's war against Hamas.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis, kidnapped 251 and wounded thousands. War crimes included various systematic sexual crimes like gang rape and genital mutilation. Men and women were violated, even after being murdered. Victims who survived that day, including hostages, endured forms of humiliation and torture.
Gazans working in the targeted Israeli villages provided intelligence to Hamas on which families to kill and torture, including long-time employers. Many Palestinian civilians joined in and celebrated the attacks. Hamas livestreamed their crimes on social media, including to victims’ accounts for families to see.
