Jag Ghankas’ Participation in the Pro-Hamas Encampment at the University of Toronto (UofT)

Jag Ghankas participates in a pro-Hamas encampment at UofT

Jag Ghankas participated in a pro-Hamas encampment at UofT in 2024. He has spread anti-Semitism, showed support for Hamas terrorists and denied Hamas war crimes.

On May 2, 2024, Ghankas posted on Instagram a video from the encampment and wrote: “Right Now!! University of Toronto!! WE ARE UNITED!! THE STUDENT INTIFADA IS HERE!! 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸.”

The term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” carries the connotation of violence. Palestinian intifadas waged against Israel have been marked since 1987 by hundreds of hijackings, shootings, stabbings, bombings and suicide missions.

On May 7, 2024, Ghankas posted on Instagram a video from the encampment and wrote: “zi0nism is an !llness.”

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.

In the video, Ghankas said [00:00:01], referring to a Jewish man filming at the encampment: “He’s just, you know, being a Zio, being angry that the world is against their genocide, just being petty. Vengeful that people are against them stealing land and murdering babies, starving babies, starving children. Being against that makes them angry. They want to be able to starve babies with impunity…”

The term "Zio" is a common derogatory reference to Zionists, as well as an often-used anti-Semitic slur among white supremacists.

Ghankas further said [00:01:32]: “Their [Zionists’] whole narrative is based on just fallacy…They’re so twisted. It’s totally delusional mental illness. These guys are freaking mental y’all. Everything you said was just b-f**king-s. Get them out of here.”

On May 8, 2024, Ghankas was featured in a video from a protest march in Toronto, which ended at the encampment. At the march, he chanted [00:00:11:] “From the River to the Sea, Palestine is almost free!”

“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free,” is a chant used [00:02:52] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel.

On May 8, 2024, Ghankas was featured in an Instagram video, in which he said: “Look at this. I just noticed we’re walking back to the [UofT] camp. Bloomberg Hall Bloomberg is a Zio. So, these Zios fund all these f**king halls, faculty of nursing, Bloomberg. Zios have got their freakin’ hands everywhere. Bloomberg’s a Zio, man, these are freaking Zio institutions.”

The video showed a sign for UofT’s Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing and also a sign that said [00:00:11]: “ZIONISTS F**K OFF.”

On May 11, 2024, Ghankas posted on Instagram a video from the encampment, in which he said [00:00:33]: “The student revolution is in full force and it can’t be stopped and it’s got the support of the community. This is it, man, worldwide student intifada, ongoing…”

UofT is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Pro-Hamas Encampment at the University of Toronto

On May 2, 2024, activists from the UofT Occupy for Palestine (Occupy UofT) group “stormed down” [00:00:24] the fencing around UofT’s Kings College Circle and set up a pro-Hamas encampment, which they called the “People’s Circle for Palestine.”

That day, Occupy UofT called on “community members to…help us defend our encampment” at an emergency rally in the evening. Protesters chanted [00:02:59] for “intifada” and celebrated “resistance” [00:02:45]. Both terms are calls for terrorism. The activists also chanted [00:01:28; 00:02:21] for Israel’s destruction multiple times.

One speaker, Nabil Jalbout, said [00:09:02]: “...we are not fighting for peace, we are fighting for liberation, because ‘peace’ is a white man's word.” Another speaker, Ahmad Jarrar Hajahmad, claimed [00:05:52]: “All these Israeli and Zionist entities fill all these politicians with money in their pockets…we already know who runs this system…”

Signs displayed at the encampment said: “LONG LIVE THE INTIFADA” and “LIBERATION FOR ALL REQUIRES RESISTANCE FROM ALL.”

On May 4, 2024, anti-Israel protesters at the encampment assaulted a Jewish man, punching him in the stomach as they forcibly took his Israeli flag. The attackers told the man [00:01:02]: “God bless the armed resistance,” and: “Go back to Europe!” They also reportedly called him “a “dirty Jew.”

Protesters “occupied” [00:00:17] the area from May to July 2024, despite UofT’s warning they were trespassing. The group said they would not leave until UofT divested from companies that “sustain Israeli apartheid, occupation and illegal settlement of Palestine” and terminated partnerships with Israeli academic institutions.

Following the October 7, 2023 massacre of nearly 1,200 Israelis, the inverted red triangle - 🔻- became a Hamas symbol. This symbol appeared on large signs at the encampment multiple times. Erin Mackey, one of the primary organizers, is openly pro-Hamas, having used the symbol in her activism. In addition, pro-Hamas marches that began in other parts of the city concluded at the encampment.

On July 3, 2024, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice issued an injunction at the request of UofT’s Governing Council, requiring students to clear the encampment. Occupy UofT dismantled the encampment and wrote [slides 5-6]: “We are just getting started…come fall, every incoming student will hear our message loud and clear…Whatever institution you have access to and influence over - you need to take this campaign there!” The statement concluded: “Long live the intifada.”

Background on Pro-Hamas Encampments

The encampment was one of over 140 pro-Hamas and anti-Israel college encampments set up in North America, and over 20 more globally, in the spring of 2024. The first began on April 17, 2024, at Columbia University. The encampments were unofficially known as the “student intifada,” borrowing a term associated with terrorist violence.

Protesters harassed Jewish students, blocked Jews from campus facilities and shouted anti-Semitic slogans. They occupied campus grounds, in many cases illegally, caused property damage, violently took over buildings, celebrated terrorism and promoted the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Activists set up encampments to oppose Israel’s right to wage war against the Hamas terror group following October 7, 2023, when Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 people, including 32 American and 8 Canadian citizens. Hamas also kidnapped 252 people, including 11 Americans and the bodies of 2 murdered Canadians. As of May 26, 2024, 125 hostages remained in Hamas captivity.

For more information on the October 7, 2023 terror attacks, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.

Jag Ghankas’ Anti-Semitism

On May 11, 2024, Ghankas posted on Instagram a video he filmed at a protest in Toronto, showing a billboard ad by Holocaust education initiative, Young Again Never Again, with quotes by Holocaust survivors.

The phrase “Never Again” is often deployed as a general declaration against genocide, invoking the Nazis’ war of extermination against the Jews.

In the video, Ghankas said: “…these Zios have the audacity to put an ad up right here saying ‘never again’. Never again for who? They’re committing genocide. Why does what Germany did to them give them the justification to do the same thing to Palestinians? This is done on purpose, they did it on Nakba Day…”

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) highlights as one possible contemporary example of anti-Semitism: “Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.” The U.S. State Department adopted the IHRA’s working definition of anti-Semitism in 2016. Over 40 countries have adopted the definition as well.

The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by drawing a comparison to the Holocaust, known in Hebrew as the Shoah, meaning “catastrophe.”

Ghankas continued [00:00:41]: “These Zios are unscrupulous, evil people, and they have the money to put these ads ‘never again’? You’re doing it right now…For 76 years on Palestinians these f**king Zios. I will never stop fighting Zionism…”

The modern State of Israel was founded 76 years earlier, in 1948.

On May 30, 2022, Ghankas posted on Instagram: “Zios have a lot of power in Canada and have the money and influence to have police and political leaders in their pockets. Smh…Canada is a settler colonial state just like isra£l. Colonizers support colonizers.”

Popular anti-Semitic conspiracy theories claim Jews control the world’s finance, media and governments. Some anti-Semites use the term “Zionists” as a euphemism for “Jews” to express supposed Jewish global power.

Jag Ghankas’ Support for Hamas Terrorists

As of August 2024, Ghankas’s Instagram bio displayed a “🔻” symbol.

The inverted red triangle is a symbol showing support for Hamas and Palestinian terrorism. It was first used by Hamas during the October 7, 2023 Hamas terror attacks to signify an Israeli target.

On October 8, 2023, Ghankas posted on Instagram a photo of himself holding a Palestinian flag and wrote: “Last minute action yesterday to support Palestinian resistance…We must always stand in solidarity with freedom f!ghters in Palestine…Bless the resistance! Bless Palestine! #longlivetheresistance #freefreePalestine #fromtherivertothesea…”

On October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis, kidnapped hundreds and wounded thousands. War crimes included mass rape and torture. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” For more information, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.

On October 10, 2023, Ghankas posted [slide 10] on Instagram a photo of himself at an anti-Israel rally in Toronto and wrote: “...Palestinians are Indigenous!! And they have the right to resist occupation by any means necessary!!...”

Anti-Israel activists use the phrase “by any means necessary,” as one of multiple euphemisms for terrorist violence, including “resistance.”

Jag Ghankas’ Denial of Hamas War Crimes

On October 9, 2023, Ghankas posted on TikTok a video, in which he said [00:01:17] referring to Hamas’ terror attacks on Israel: “We’re hearing a lot from mainstream news media powered by the Zio lobby that there are civilians being attacked…Let’s be honest, there’s no evidence of this so-called ‘torture’ and all this ‘abuse’ that you’re hearing, there’s literally no evidence, it’s all hearsay, stories, conjecture, powered by the Israeli lobby…”

The “Israel Lobby” is a conspiracy theory alleging Israeli and Jewish control over the U.S. government. Proponents of the theory decry the negative effects on American interests, particularly in foreign policy.

Denial of the Hamas war crimes of October 7, 2023, among anti-Israel activists has been likened to Holocaust denial among neo-Nazis.

On May 9, 2024, Ghankas was featured in a video reposted from his Instagram Stories, in which he verbally assaulted an elderly Jewish man. The incident reportedly [00:01:11] occurred at the May 7, 2024 “HANDS OFF RAFAH” protest.

In the video, Ghankas said to the man: “This old Zio here, they’re still sticking to this number of October 7th, 1,200 [Israelis murdered by Hamas] which the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] bombed their own kibbutzes, the IDF helicopters bombed their own ravers, they lied about forty babies...and these f**king old Zios still believe this crap. These ignorant old monsters, this is a monster in front of us…”

Hamas terrorists murdered at least 40 Israeli Jewish babies during its October 7, 2023, terror attacks. Some of the babies were beheaded and some were murdered in front of their parents.

In the same May 9, 2024 video, Ghankas continued [00:00:29]: “These people are monsters, this is a monster walking among us. A beast. F**k out of here, Zio, you old f**k, I don’t give a f**k how old you are, I don’t give a f**k how enfeebled you are. You’re a f**king monster.”

Jag Ghankas’s Anti-Israel Activism, Work and Education

Jag Ghankas is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In 2023, Ghankas was an activist with the Toronto chapter of the pro-terror group Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM).

As of October 2023, Ghankas had been an activist with the anti-Israel group Toronto4Palestine since 2022. Toronto4Palestine was formerly called the Greater Toronto Area Palestine Movement (GTA Palestine Movement).
