Defending a Terrorist
On June 30, 2020, Ramadan tweeted in reference to Ahmad Erakat: “Hey guys, my cousin was murdered last week by an IDF [Israel Defense Forces] soldier…”Ahmad Erekat [Ahmad Moustafa Erekat; Ahmed Erakat] was killed by Israeli security forces after he accelerated and rammed his car into soldiers at a checkpoint. One female soldier was injured. The incident was captured on video.
On July 1, 2020, Ramadan tweeted: “...Israel is a criminal state, my cousin was murdered by a WAR CRIMINAL. Wake your s**t up.”
Spreading Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theories
On July 1, 2020, Ramadan tweeted: “The IDF [Israel Defense Forces] has literally been found guilty of trafficking organs of dead Palestinians on the black market.”On June 30, 2020, Ramadan tweeted: “This isn’t a conspiracy theory. Israel has been involved in illegally trafficking the organs of slain Palestinians on the black market for decades. It’s a widely known open secret that they murder Palestinians in order to steal and harvest their organs.”
Accusations against Israel stealing or harvesting organs have been rehashed over the years, echoing old anti-Semitic blood libels against Jews alleging they would abduct gentiles for sacrificial purposes, including using the blood of Christian children to bake matzah for the Jewish holiday of Passover.
On August 17, 2019, Ramadan tweeted: “Zionism was founded by Ashkenazi Jews is Eastern Europe, the leaders and soldiers who colonized Palestine were Ashkenazi Europeans. To act like there isn’t a difference between them and Arab Jews is ignoring a huge and integral part of the history and science.”
Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.
Demonizing Israel
On the same day, Ramadan also tweeted that Israeli soldiers were “war criminals serving an apartheid state” and accused Israel of being “a rotten country [that] has infiltrated and used Judaism as a mask to kill, maim, steal, and torture an entire nation of people…”On June 30, 2020, evoking the “Deadly Exchange” narrative, Ramadan tweeted: “The U.S. police force send their cops to Israel for training. The same Philadelphia company that manufactures tear gas canisters used on protesters in the U.S. is used against protesters in Palestine. These connections are not coincidental, we are up against the same enemy.”
In 2017, JVP launched the “Deadly Exchange (DX)” campaign, which accused American Jewish organizations of promoting human rights abuses. JVP also released a video that blamed [00:04:04] U.S.-based Jewish organizations for violence that occurs against Black and Brown communities, immigrants and activists in the U.S.
Endorsing Anti-Israel Agitators
On July 17, 2020, Ramadan tweeted: “Seeing Angela Davis hold a sign saying #BringAhmadHome, and @marclamonthill leading a call to action video to get the word out really pulled me out of a dark spot. In all this complicit silence, y’all really showed up, and for that I am eternally grateful. #BringThemAllHome”Angela Davis made the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitive List in 1970 after being charged as a principal in an aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder, for purchasing the shotgun used in the abduction and killing of a judge.
In November 2018, Hill was fired from his contributor position at CNN (Cable News Network) after he gave an anti-Israel speech at the United Nations. He called [00:20:47] for a “free Palestine from the river to the sea,” a phrase associated with demands to dismantle the State of Israel. Hill also accused [00:16:19] Israel of “ethnic cleansing,” as well as [00:17:49] “white supremacy” and [00:17:56] “settler colonialism.”
Ramadan retweeted a February 10, 2019 tweet that read: “This is legitimately brave. AIPAC [American Israel Public Affairs Committee] does not represent American Jews. It represents business interests, especially military-industrial interests. It also represents a settler colonial-state and the violence it perpetrates. Thank you congresswoman.”
The tweet expressed support for Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who tweeted that day that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) was responsible for “paying American politicians to be pro-Israel.”
The stated mission of AIPAC is to “strengthen, protect and promote the U.S.-Israel relationship in ways that enhance the security of the United States and Israel.”
Ilhan Omar was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018. In February 2019, top Congressional leaders denounced Omar for tweeting anti-Semitic remarks.
Supporting BDS
On June 30, 2020, Ramadan shared on Twitter an Aavaz.org petition that called on “faculty, universities, and all honourable people around the world to boycott and sever ties with Tel Aviv University & Greenberg Institute.”The Greenberg National Institute of Forensic Medicine, also known as the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute, is a department of the Israeli Health Ministry located in Tel Aviv, which conducts forensic examination and identifies victims of terror attacks. It has an affiliation with Tel Aviv University.
The petition also alleged that Israel uses Palestinians corpses as tools of “ongoing land-grab and war crimes.”
On the same day, Ramadan also claimed that Tel Aviv University (TAU) “has illegally trafficked the organs of Palestinians!”
Ramadan retweeted a May 14, 2018 tweet that said: “...Stop $10 million/day US support for Israeli military NOW.”
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
