Eugene Puryear promoted terrorism and expressed support for Hamas at an October 8, 2023 rally he helped organize. Puryear also glorified terrorism in May 2024, as well as spoke at the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia in April 2024.
Activists repeatedly celebrated the mass murder of Israeli civilians. They stomped on [00:00:01] and burned [00:00:21] Israeli flags. Speakers led [00:17:43] calls for Israel’s violent destruction and celebrated [00:20:45] Hamas firing rockets at Israeli cities and the taking [00:27:27] of hostages.
Puryear is a founding member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL).
As of October 2023, Puryear was also an activist with the ANSWER Coalition and he worked as a host and producer for BreakThrough News (BT News).

Organizing a Rally in Support of Hamas Terrorist War Crimes
On October 8, 2023, Puryear helped organize a rally in New York City’s Times Square to support the Hamas terror attacks on Israeli citizens that took place the day before The Hamas atrocities resulted in nearly 1,200 deaths. On October 8, 2023, the anti-Israel groups Al-Awda and American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) joined with other groups in New York City for a rally in support of the previous day’s Hamas terror attacks on Israeli civilians.

Speakers led [00:17:43] calls for Israel’s violent destruction and celebrated [00:20:45] Hamas firing rockets at Israeli cities and the taking [00:27:27] of hostages.
At the rally, Puryear led a chant calling for “intifada,” a term associated with terrorist violence. He repeatedly showed [01:45:49] support for terrorists and also celebrated Hamas taking civilians hostage.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis, kidnapped hundreds and wounded thousands. War crimes included mass rape and torture. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” For more information, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.
The term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” carries the connotation of violence. Palestinian intifadas waged against Israel have been marked since 1987 by hundreds of hijackings, shootings, stabbings, bombings and suicide missions.
One way that anti-Israel activists spread anti-Semitism is by claiming that Jews have no connection to the Land of Israel.
Hamas is a designated terrorist organization founded in 1987 that is dedicated to destroying Israel and killing Jews. Since 2001, Hamas has launched thousands of rockets at Israel and on October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped over 200 hostages, including children and the elderly.
Promoting Terrorism at the Pro-Hamas Rally
At the same October 8, 2023 rally he helped organize, Puryear led [00:00:01] activists in chanting: “Long live the intifada!”The term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” carries the connotation of violence. At the rally, Puryear addressed [01:45:49] rally participants in front of the Consulate General of Israel in New York City and shouted into a megaphone [01:47:12]: “Because as long as the Palestinian resistance is in the field, we will be here to have their backs! Am I right?!” He stood [02:01:00] before a PSL sign that read: “STAND WITH PALESTINIAN RESISTANCE. END ALL U.S. AID TO APARTHEID ISRAEL.”
Puryear applauded [02:02:49] an activist as she read a joint statement co-authored by Al-Awda calling “on all people of conscience to demand the immediate dismantlement of all Zionist supremacist institutions” and “on Palestinians globally to take their place in history, and to mobilize in all fora in support of the Liberation Operation.”
Puryear also told [00:00:13] protesters: “And as you might have seen, there was some sort of rave or desert party where they were having a great time until the resistance came in electrified hang gliders and took at least several dozen hipsters. But I’m sure they’re doing very fine…”
At the rally, Puryear chanted [00:11:54]: “Netanyahu, you will learn, refugees will return!”
At the rally, Puryear was quoted as saying: “...Palestinians are right to stand up against occupation. Apartheid resistance is not terrorism.”

The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

Glorifying Terrorism
On May 25, 2024, BreakThrough News uploaded a video to YouTube featuring Puryear speaking at the People’s Conference for Palestine in Detroit, Michigan. The conference was organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) and a variety of other anti-Israel organizations.
In the video, Puryear said [01:10:47]: “I think it’s important that we just continue…to lift up the Palestinian political prisoners, to demand that they all be released, to push back against this ridiculous propaganda. They are not terrorists, they are freedom fighters, and that has to be continually underlined.”
Puryear led the crowd in chanting [01:36:34]: “…And let’s not forget that we’re here in Harlem, the home of Malcolm X, who said that the Zionist project is a form of colonialism…”
Puryear continued [01:37:09] leading the chanting: “So, just like the Native Americans, just like the Black people of Harlem, and just like the Palestinians today, we stand here against ethnic cleansing, colonialism and genocide!”

Eugene Puryear’s Support for Columbia’s Pro-Hamas Encampment

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture. Zionism is a core part of the identity of most Jews.
Puryear continued [01:37:09] leading the chanting: “So, just like the Native Americans, just like the Black people of Harlem, and just like the Palestinians today, we stand here against ethnic cleansing, colonialism and genocide!”

At the event, Puryear also took part [01:40:22] in the chant: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!”
“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free,” is a chant used [00:02:52] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel.

On April 17, 2024, Columbia students and anti-Israel activists set up a pro-Hamas encampment on campus to protest Israel’s war against Hamas and promote BDS. The encampment was forcibly dismantled and approximately 80 Columbia students were arrested.
A new Columbia encampment was erected, during which participants forced their way into the university’s Hamilton Hall, vandalizing [00:00:55] and destroying university property. They barricaded themselves in the building, taking three Columbia custodians hostage. An NYPD raid on the building found knives, gas masks, ropes and literature that read: “...DESTROY zionist business interests everywhere!...DEATH TO AMERICA!...”
