Enya Tellez
Overview
Enya Tellez spread hatred of Israel during an unapproved speech at Tellez’s college graduation. Tellez also defended pro-terrorist campus activism during an Israeli war against Hamas terrorists. The incidents occurred while Tellez was co-president of the student body of New York University’s (NYU) Silver School of Social Work (NYU Silver). In May 2024, Tellez and the other NYU Silver co-president delivered a speech together at the NYU Silver graduation ceremony where Tellez claimed Israel was committing a “genocide” in Gaza.
Tellez gave the speech during Israel’s war against Hamas, launched after the October 7, 2023 terror attacks. War crimes against Israeli civilians included mass murder, torture, rape, beheadings and kidnappings. The attacks left over 1,200 Israelis dead, hundreds kidnapped and thousands wounded. For more information, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.
Tellez was co-president of the Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA) at NYU Silver for the 2023-2024 academic year.
As of June 2024, Tellez’s LinkedIn profile said Tellez had been working as a “Social Work Intern” at AHRC New York City since August 2023, and as a barista at Ocafe since April 2021.
Also as of June 2024, Tellez’s LinkedIn said that Tellez graduated from NYU with a bachelor’s degree in “Social Work & Communicative Sciences and Disorders” in 2024.
Hatred of Israel
On May 16, 2024, Tellez and Raeli Chesser, the other co-president of the USGA, gave a speech together at the NYU Silver commencement ceremony.During the speech, Tellez said [00:00:01]: “Even as we celebrate our accomplishments today, we recognize the struggle of those affected by the ongoing genocide in Gaza.”
On May 17, 2024, Tellez posted [slide 1] a video of a portion of the speech on Instagram and captioned it: “we won’t be censored!!...As usga co-presidents, raeli & i were invited to speak at silver graduation. when we originally submitted our remarks, we included the word genocide. we were told if we did not agree to change that word, we would not be allowed to speak…in our social work classes, we frequently discuss the importance and gravity of language. so on thursday, we said what we meant.”
Defending Pro-Terrorist Activism
In December 2023, Tellez co-sponsored an anti-Israel resolution published by the NYU Student Government Association (SGA).The resolution said [p. 3]: “WHEREAS, the student-based group, NYU New Zionist Congress (NYU NZC), has violated the conditions of the Student Conduct Policy by inciting the vilification and misrepresentation of pro-Palestinian speech among the student body, having deemed Students for Justice in Palestine’s educational night for the commemoration of Palestinian resistance against Israeli occupation ‘obscene programming.’”
Among Palestinians and anti-Israel activists, the term “resistance” can be a euphemism for nationalistic terror. It is often used to excuse or even glorify anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence.
The resolution also wrote [p. 2]: “The University has a history of suppressing… public displays of solidarity with Palestine, as with the Vigil to Honor the Victims of Jenin with SGA.” The “Vigil” was organized on February 9, 2023, by the NYU chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and the SGA. The vigil was reportedly held to “mourn the Palestinians killed during an Israeli military raid” in Jenin about two weeks earlier.
On January 26, 2023, nine Palestinians were killed in a shootout after IDF soldiers entered the Jenin refugee camp to arrest a cell of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists, who were reportedly planning a terror attack. During the attempted arrests, members of the cell as well as other Palestinian gunmen opened fire on the soldiers.
