Diljot Kaur
Diljot Kaur participated in the pro-Hamas encampment at UofT in May 2024 where she held a sign calling for Israel’s destruction. The encampment was in support of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
On May 8, 2024, Kaur appeared [slide 3] in an Instagram photo taken at the UofT encampment where she held a sign that said: “Right of Return / Land Back / Indigenous peoples are / Under attack! FIGHT BACK.”
The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel. International law mandates no absolute right of return and UN Resolution 194, which defined principles for “refugees wishing to return to their homes,” was unanimously rejected by Arab nations following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
One method anti-Israel activists use to spread anti-Semitism and deny Israel’s legitimacy is to claim that Jews are not indigenous to the Land of Israel. The claim takes multiple forms, including the “Khazar myth” which alleges that Ashkenazi Jews are ethnically European and are not descended from the ancient Israelites of the Bible.
Also in May 2024, Kaur posted the same photo on her Instagram and wrote: “THE STUDENTS UNITED WILL NEVER BE DEFEATED! FREE FREE PALESTINE 🍉”
The watermelon has been appropriated by anti-Israel activists as a symbol of Palestinian "resistance" to "Israeli occupation," as it shares the Pan-Arab colors. It has been depicted in art, used on flags at protests and posted online. It gained popularity following the Hamas terror attacks of October 7, 2023.
