Carlos Montes

Overview

Carlos Montes has expressed support for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestinian (PFLP) terrorist organization, promoted PFLP terrorist Rasmea Odeh and demonized Israel.

Montes is affiliated with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and reportedly attended [00:02:24] the 2018 National SJP Conference.

The 2018 National SJP conference was held on November 16-18, 2018 at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The conference was themed “Radical Hope: Resistance in the Face of Adversity.” The conference website stated: “[t]he reason we can have hope is that Zionism...can be destroyed.”

Montes is a co-founder of the Palestine Solidarity Group (PSG) in Chicago. As of January 2019, PSG’s stated goal on their website was to mobilize supporters and activists “against racism and Zionism.”

Montes is a co-founder of the Brown Berets, a militant Chicano rights group modeled on the Black Panthers, who were active in the 1960s and 1970s.

Montes was also an activist with the Anti War Committee (AWC). In May 2012, Montes stated 00:52:32] that the AWC investigates [00:52:32] “the violation of human rights” of Palestinians and denounces “those atrocities.”

Montes is a founding member of the Committee to Stop FBI Repression, a member of the communist Freedom Road Socialist Organization [FRSO]/Fightback and a contributor to its Marxist-Leninist online news source FightBack!News.

Montes attended the East Los Angeles College (ELAC) in 1967.

Expressing support for the PFLP

On May 11, 2017, Montes shared to Facebook a FightBack!News article which publicized a PFLP statement that glorified Ahmad Sa’adat, Ahed Abu Ghoulmeh and other PFLP leaders for joining the Palestinian prisoners’ hunger strike

Ahmad Sa’adat is the Secretary General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). He is currently sentenced for terror activities, including his role in the 2001 assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze’evi and is in an Israeli prison. Under Sa’adat’s leadership, the PFLP perpetrated many suicide bombings against Israeli civilians during the second intifada

Ahed Abu Gholma [sometimes spelled Ghoulmeh] is a PFLP terrorist and was the mastermind behind the 2001 assassination of Ze’evi.

The article shared by Montes said: “the leader Ahmad Sa’adat joining the Strike of Dignity is a living lesson in courage, will and determination and a model of steadfast leadership.”

“Dignity Strike” refers to a hunger strike initiated by Marwan Barghouti on April 16, 2017. More than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners participated in the strike – most them also convicted for acts of terrorism. Barghouti headed the Palestinian Authority (PA) terrorist Tanzim force and founded the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. He was sentenced to five consecutive life terms by an Israeli civilian court for some of his crimes, including his role in the Sbarro Cafe bombing

On October 15, 2012, Montes shared to Facebook a FightBack!News piece which shared a PFLP statement that glorified PFLP terrorists as “eternal martyrs.”

The PFLP — designated a terrorist organization by the United States, Canada, Israel, the European Union, the Gulf Cooperation Council and Australia — pioneered aircraft hijackings to draw attention to their movement’s demands, most notably with the capture of an Air France plane in 1976.

The hijackers flew the plane to Entebbe, Uganda, where they separated nearly 100 Jewish passengers from the others and threatened to execute one Jew per hour. Israel, however, launched a successful commando raid to rescue the hostages.

The PFLP also claimed “credit” for the November 18, 2014 Har Nof Synagogue massacre — where PFLP operatives murdered six people with a gun, axes and a butcher knife during morning prayers. PFLP Gaza leader Hani Thawbta stated: “We declare full responsibility of the PFLP for the execution of this heroic operation..."

On April 20, 2012, Montes shared a link on Facebook to a FightBack!News article titled: “Huge hunger strike by Palestinian political prisoners.” The article referred to previous hunger strikers Khader Adnan and Hana Shalabi as “heroic.”

Khader Adnan was a senior member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist organization. A 2007 YouTube video showed Adnan praising and encouraging suicide bombings: "Who among you will carry the next explosive belt? Who among you will fire the next bullets? Who among you will have his body parts blown all over?” In May 2023, Adnan died in prison after refusing medical treatment during a hunger strike.

Hana Shalabi is reportedly a supporter of the terror group Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). Shalabi was arrested in 2012 for alleged “involvement in planned attacks” by PIJ.

Promoting Terrorist Rasmea Odeh

On October 22, 2017, Montes wrote on Facebook: “Solidarity Rasmea,Palestinian/American activust[sic.] persecuted and expelled from US speaking to us from Amman Jordan at SDS National conference at UCSB.” The post included a video of Odeh speaking at the conference.

Odeh was a key military operative [00:02:08]with the terrorist group the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 1969, Odeh masterminded a PFLP bombing that killed two college students in a Jerusalem supermarket. Odeh also attempted to bomb the British consulate.

Odeh confessed, in a highly detailed account, the day following her arrest. In a 2004 documentary, one of Odeh’s co-conspirators directly implicated [00:10:53] Odeh as the mastermind.

In 1970, an Israeli court tried and convicted Odeh for her involvement in both bombings and sentenced her to life imprisonment. However, Odeh was released 10 years later, in a prisoner swap and emigrated to the United States.

On November 10, 2014, a Michigan federal jury convicted Odeh for immigration fraud because she failed to disclose her prior conviction and life sentence on her immigration application. On March 12, 2015, she was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

In 2017, after an appeal and a lengthy court battle, Odeh admitted to immigration fraud, was stripped of her U.S. citizenship, deported to Jordan and banned from re-entering the U.S.

On October 14, 2015, Montes posted to Facebook several photos of himself at a demonstration he co-hosted the day before titled: “Free Rasema, Free Palestine Action in LA.” Montes held a sign that said: “Free Rasmea, Free Palestine.”

The event’s Facebook description said: “Rasmea Odeh, long time Palestinian/American activist is appealing her wrongful conviction in court on October 14th.”

During the demonstration, protestors reportedly chanted: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!” One demonstrator also held a sign that read: “End U.S. Aid to Israeli Terror”

On October 13, 2015, Montes promoted the protest he co-hosted on Facebook: “Join us tomorrow, Tuesday, October 13, in solidarity with Rasmea and Palestine!”

On February 14, 2015, Montes posted to Facebook two photos of Odeh and added: “SeeingRasmeaon Skype! Free Rasmea: Solidarity Rasmea.”

On August 5, 2014, Montes shared to Facebook a photo of Odeh, with the caption “Don’t Deport Rasmea Drop the Charges Now!”

On June 10, 2014, Montes shared an event on Facebook by the Committee to Stop FBI Repression titled: “June 10 Call-in Day to Say ‘Drop the Charges Against Rasmea Odeh Now!’” Montes wrote: “Please support by calling in Tuesday!” and commented: “I called did you?”

In a November 1, 2013 post to the Free Rasmea Now Facebook page, Montes wrote: “I support Rasmea, drop the charges!”

On November 6, 2013, Montes published an article in FightBack!News titled: “We must support Rasmea Odeh!” In the article, Montes wrote “I am in full support of Rasmea...She needs our backing and solidarity.”

The piece continued: “show your support at her Detroit court hearing on Nov. 13. Sign the petition and have your organization send a letter of support.”

Demonizing Israel

On July 26, 2014, during Operation Protective Edge (OPE), Montes posted to Facebook a photo of Colombian politicians holding up signs in Spanish that said: “End the Massacre in Gaza.”

Israel commenced Operation Protective Edge (OPE) in July 2014, to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.

On July 20, 2014, Montes shared to Facebook a FightBack!News article which reported that over 10,000 protesters demonstrated in Chicago “to condemn Israel’s murderous assault on Gaza.”

On July 13, 2014, Montes shared a FightBack!News article to Facebook titled: “Large protest in Milwaukee denounces bombing and occupation of Palestine.” The protest condemned: “the ongoing bombings in Gaza, kidnappings and murders in the West Bank” in a “brutal campaign of collective punishment against the Palestinian people.”

On March 6, 2014, the anti-Israel site The Electronic Intifada (EI) published an interview with Montes titled: “How Latino activists are standing up to the Israel Lobby.”

Montes reportedly said: “These organizations, like the ADL [Anti Defamation League] and the JCRC [Jewish Community Relations Council] silence dissent and the Palestinian narrative. They also have a huge influence on the Congress and the Senate.”

Montes reportedly also said that Latino activists “see that the Israel lobby is strong, and they are politicians, If they take a position that is against Israel, they will get snapped.”

Attending the 2018 National SJP Conference

On November 18, 2018, US Palestinian Community network posted a video of USPCN “National coordinating committee member Hatem Abudayyeh giving the keynote talk at the #NSJP2018 conference!” Abudayyeh thanked Montes for attending [00:02:24] the 2018 National SJP Conference.

2018 National SJP - Celebrating Violence

During the 2018 National SJP conference, anti-Israel activist Mohammed Nabulsi led the attendees in the chant [00:00:52] “Long Live the Intifada! Intifada! Intifada!”

Since the early 2000’s, the term “intifada” has carried the connotation of violence. The second intifada was characterized by more than 120 suicide bombings targeting Israeli civilians on buses and in cafes.

Anti-Israel activist Omar Zahzah also reportedly [00:00:07] led National SJP attendees in chanting, in Arabic, “With our bodies and our blood, we will free Palestine.”

As of November 2018, the 2018 National SJP website glorified “radical hope and upfront defiance of Zionism,” citing as examples the “early revolts through the Intifadas to the Great Return March.”

The Great Return March of 2018 was organized and funded by the terror group Hamas as a campaign of violent protests along Israel’s border to spotlight the demand of Palestinians to “return” to Israel.

Tens of thousands of rioters gathered on Israel’s Gaza border, attempting numerous breaches of Israel’s border fence, with leaders andparticipants declaring their intention to harm Jews.

National SJP originally promoted a conference logo featuring a keffiyeh-wearing bear, looking toward a kite bearing the colors of the Palestinian flag.

On October 27, 2018, National SJP said the kite signified “the power in the Gaza March of Return.”

Since March 2018, March of Return participants and Hamas’s “Kite Unit” have sent hundreds of kites bearing incendiary devices and IEDs (improvised explosive devices) across the border into Israel to terrorize Israelis. The kites are often marked with swastikas.

By the time National SJP produced its 2018 conference logo highlighting the kites in October 2018, Gazan terror kites and balloons had ignited more than 1,300 fires in Israel, over seven months.

2018 National SJP - Undermining U.S. Support for Israel

On November 18, 2018, the US Palestine Community Network (USPCN) posted on Facebook the 2018 National SJP keynote speech by Hatem Abudayyeh, USPCN’s co-founder

Abudayyeh has supported [00:08:45] convicted terrorists, praised terror organizations, called for Israel’s destruction and is an activist in theBoycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In his 2018 National SJP Keynote, Abudayyeh said [00:53:01] that the “specific role” of Palestinian and Arab students was to organize [00:53:42] in order to weaken “Zionist Israel” and force [00:54:23] the U.S. to “no longer provide it with diplomatic, political, financial and military cover and support.”

Abudayyeh predicted [00:55:37] that once U.S. support to Israel ends, National SJP attendees would return to Palestine as “conquering heroes,” end [00:54:38] the “occupation and colonization of all Arab lands including the Golan Heights” and replace “Zionist Israel” with a Palestinian state.

2018 National SJP - Whitewashing Terror Organizations

During his keynote speech, Abudayyeh also painted [00:14:01] terrorist organizations as “liberation movements” and “resistance organizations,” stating [00:14:21] “what we also know is that the majority of the resistance organizations in Palestine are on the U.S. state department list of foreign terrorist organizations.”

Abudayyeh also celebrated [00:52:00] that all of the “armed resistance” organizations in Gaza are part [00:52:14] of a “unified resistance in Gaza, that includes all of the resistance organizations, working together under a unified military command.”

2018 National SJP - Defending Terrorist Rasmea Odeh

During his keynote speech, Abudayyeh claimed [00:08:28] that pro-Israel organizations “go after students like you,” adding [00:08:20] “just like they went after my friend and colleague, Rasmea Odeh.”

Odeh was a key military operative with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorist organization. In 1969, she masterminded a PFLP supermarket bombing that killed two college students. She also attempted to bomb the British consulate in Jerusalem. Odeh later moved to the United States but was deported to Jordan in 2017 for immigration fraud.

Abudayyeh added that he was asked [00:08:45] to talk about Odeh’s case, and praised SJP and SDS students who organized [00:09:15] “absolutely valuable” events on behalf [00:9:11] of Odeh, “as she was fighting to stay in the U.S.”

2018 National SJP - Demonizing Israel and Jews

During his keynote speech, Abudayyeh defended [00:27:25] the “Irvine 11” — eleven Muslim Student Union (MSA)   members who were arrested in 2010 for repeatedly shouting down former Israeli ambassador Michael Oren during an address at the University of California at Irvine (UC Irvine).

Abudayyeh referred [00:27:37] to Oren as a “racist fascist speaker, representative of a racist, fascist country.”

Abudayyeh went on to claim [00:29:48] that “today, even in the United States, Israel is finally being seen as the criminal, apartheid, racist state that it is.”

Abudayyeh also called for increased action in the face of President U.S. Donald Trump, and referred [00:48:41] to Jared Kushner, Trump’s Jewish son-in-law and senior advisor, as “that pig son-in-law of his.”

2018 National SJP - Excluding Students

The 2018 National SJP Conference welcomed only students who were verified and vouched for by an SJP (or otherwise named campus Palestine solidarity group). Media requests needed to be “approved by the NSJP press team” prior to the conference.

A November 7, 2018 Columbus Jewish News article reported that the Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed a resolution calling on UCLA to cancel the 2018 NSJP conference, stating that a “public university should not allow any group to implement a litmus test for event participation on their campus.”

On November 12, 2018, UCLA Chancellor Gene Block published an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times that criticized National SJP’s exclusion of members of pro-Israel student groups.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
