Promoting Violence Against Jews and Israelis

On March 21, 2022, Leon tweeted: “Sticks and stones can break the idf [Israel Defense Forces]💀.”

Although romanticized as a form of “popular resistance,” rock throwing remains a deadly form of violence

On January 20, 2022, Leon tweeted: “Sticks and stones can break the idf bones🦴.”

Leon’s tweet was in response to another tweet that said: “@giladerdan1 shows the UN [United Nations] Security Council a large rock like the kind Palestinians threw at Israeli vehicles 1,775 times in 2021…” The tweet included a photo of the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, holding a rock.

On December 29, 2021, Leon tweeted: “I mean when you are wearing a terrorist org [organization] shirt you are básica [basically] asking for it.”

Leon’s tweet was in response to another tweet that said: “On Sunday, 2 Jewish men were victims of a violent antisemitic attack in New York. They were attacked because one was wearing an IDF sweatshirt…”

On December 26, 2021, two Jewish college students, Blake Zavadsky and Ilan Kaganovich, were reportedly assaulted by two men outside a Foot Locker in Brooklyn, New York. Zavadsky, who was wearing an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) sweatshirt, waspunched in the face by one of the assailants, who called Zavadsky and Kaganovich “dirty Jews.”

On May 7, 2021, Leon tweeted: “Give Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah guns.”

In May 2021, calls to “save” Sheikh Jarrah, a Jerusalem neighborhood at the center of a property dispute, led to violence against Israelis and were one of the leading factors in Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists firing over 4,300 rockets from Gaza into Israel that month.

Hamas has been designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S., Canada, European Union, Israel and other countries. Founded in 1987, it has killed thousands of Israeli civilians through mass shootings and suicide bombings. Hamas has also kidnapped children, families and the elderly and held them hostage in Gaza. It has desecrated [slide 2] dead bodies and launched numerous rocket attacks against Israeli civilians.

The tweet was in response to a tweet from Jewish US politician Alma Hernandez that said: “Members of the anti-Israel group SJP at Arizona State University called for the complete destruction of Israel ‘from the [Jordan] River to the [Mediterranean] Sea’ and rejected the two-state peace solution. This behavior threatens Jewish students and must not be tolerated at @ASU.”

The tweet included a video of anti-Israel protesters chanting: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) highlights as one possible contemporary example of anti-Semitism: “Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.” The U.S. State Department adopted the IHRA’s working definition of anti-Semitism in 2016. Over 40 other countries have adopted the definition as well.
On April 11, 2022, Leon tweeted: “The only terroristare people with a🇮🇱 on their bio [biography] Zionism is heavily influence on nazism.”

Anti-Israel Activism

Leon participated [slides 9-11] in the “dying in” disruption outside of the venue, which involved students lying down on the ground while holding anti-Israel signs. One sign read [slide 7]: “NO WALLS OR BORDERS ON STOLEN LAND.”

SJP ASU and other student groups overtook the reserved venue prior to the event, while [slide 13] Leon and around 80 other protesters blocked the entrance to the room, forcing event organizers to relocate to another venue.

On the same date, SJP ASU posted to Instagram a photo of the activists and wrote: “Whether it’s ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] or IDF, agents of genocide and oppression are not welcome on campus. Thank you to all who helped us make that clear tonight.

At the meeting, Leon said [00:38:45] “I should have the right to boycott [Israel], and pressure my university…to also do the same.” He went on to say [00:38:54]: “I don’t want my university to take part in the apartheid state of Israel.”

Senate Resolution (SR) 09, co-sponsored by SJP ASU, called on USG to “show support for Palestinian students and their fight for human rights by participating in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement.”

Before the senate meeting, USG President Katherine Hostal removed the resolution from the agenda.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
