Anwar Omeish

Overview

Anwar Omeish is an anti-Israel activist who was denied entry to Israel in 2015. Several members of her family are also “explicitly banned” from entering Israel and are heavily involved with anti-Israel activism.

Omeish’s father, Esam Omeish, is the former president of the Muslim American Society (MAS) and has been accused of “urging violence” and criticized for his anti-Israel activism.

Omeish’s uncle, Mohamed Omeish, headed the United States branch of a charity, the International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO), that channeled funds to terrorist organizations associated with al-Qaeda.

Omeish is active on social media and has used her Twitter to demonize Israel.

Omeish is also a supporter and promoter of Mads Gilbert, a propagandist for the Hamas government in Gaza who has been banned from entering Israel.

Omeish is a member of Palestine Solidarity Committee (PSC) at Harvard University (Harvard). The PSC is an alternative name for Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).

Omeish supports the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In July of 2014, Omeish performed an anti-Israel poem at an Al-Awda national demonstration. Al-Awdaadvocates for the destruction of Israel.

She has reportedly initiated an invitation to Nihad Awad, the creator of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) who has endorsed Hamas, to give a lecture at Harvard and receive an award.

As of June 2019, Omeish’s LinkedIn page said that she was a “Scholar & Advocate” in the Greater Boston Area and that she graduated from Harvard with a bachelor’s degree in Social Studies.

Omeish’s Linked page also said she was an Editorial Intern at Boston Review Magazine from “Feb 2019 - May 2019.”

Also as of June 2019, Omeish posted on Facebook: “This summer, I will be in Virginia, applying for jobs that will allow me to build on this work for a year or two before I return to school for a PhD in political theory (or a related field).”

Denied Entry to Israel

In March of 2015, Omeish was denied entry to Israel. Israeli border officials claimed that she lied to them, which she denies.

Omeish detailed her attempt to enter Israel in a Tumblr blog post, in which she stated that her family has a “genetic predisposition for causing problems here [Israel] - two of my uncles made a documentary about the occupation, called Occupation 101 (one of them also made The War Around Us); my father has always been outspoken about these things, especially while he was the president of the Muslim American Society; and my uncle was in the leadership of some of the organizations that were severely scrutinized (under the guise of anti-terror investigation) after 9/11 for supporting Palestine. So clearly, my history is not exactly the most Israeli-border-agent-friendly.”

Omeish then wrote “I am so so blessed to have been born into an activist family, a troublemaking family, a doing family. I am blessed to have family friends who have been sent to jail for voicing their beliefs and I am blessed to have a father who has been in this fight from the start. I am so, so blessed to be a part of this legacy, to take up the mantle, to be a part of these ranks. And if the price of all of this is being denied access to the Holy Land, then I will take it. I will take it.”

Anti-Israel Tweets

Below is a sample of Omeish’s many anti-Israel tweets.

On July 29, 2014, Omeish tweeted “Confession: I purposefully watch pirated movies when an actor or director is staunchly Zionist so that I don't give them money.

On May 28, 2014, Omeish tweeted" ‘The general definition of what ethnic cleansing consists of applies almost verbatim to the case of Palestine.’ #IlanPappe.”

On August 27, 2013, Omeish tweeted “like, there is no such thing as the 'right to exist.' no state has a 'right to exist.' israel needs to sit down.”

On February 26, 2013, Omeish tweeted “If you think Israeli system is anything less than apartheid (may be more than apartheid but it's sure as hell not less), you're wrong. Bye.”

Promoting Hamas Propagandist

Omeish is a supporter and promoter of Mads Gilbert, a propagandist for the Hamas government in Gaza who has been banned from entering Israel.

On January 22, 2015, Omeish attended an event featuring Gilbert and wrote about the event on her Tumblr blog.

Gilbert has been banned indefinitely from entering Gaza through Israel because of his connections to the Hamas leadership.

In 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2014 Gilbert was stationed at a hospital that served as a Hamas command center and rocket launching site. During that time he acted as a propagandist for the Hamas government in Gaza.

In 2001, following al Qaeda's September 11 terrorist attacks, Gilbert expressed support for the terror acts as a “legitimate response.” In December of 2009, Gilbert was accused of faking resuscitation on a dead child in Gaza for dramatic effect for a CNN video.

Promoting BDS

On May 6, 2013, Omeish tweeted “Boycott, Divest, Sanction! #BDS.”

On January 22, 2015 Omeish tweeted a number of quotes by Mads Gilbert promoting BDS.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
