Glorifying a Terrorist

Emsais retweeted a July 8, 2021 tweet from anti-Israel agitator Mohmmed El-Kurd that read: “49 yrs ago, the zionist occupation authorities assassinated author Ghassan Kanafani… His revolutionary articulations of the Palestinian plight for liberation shook the colonial regime. Yet he is not dead: his ideas remain ever timely & teachable.

Kanafani was a leading member and spokesperson for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) during the terrorist organization’s early years. Kanafani announced the PFLP’s responsibility for the Lod Airport Massacre of May 1972 and was linked to the airport attackers. The attack killed 26 people and wounded 80 others.

Emsais retweeted a July 8, 2021 tweet that read: “On this day in 1972, Ghassan Kanafani was assassinated by Israel for his staunch anti-Zionism, his commitment to revolutionary politics & armed struggle, and perhaps most of all, his masterful ability to convey those messages eloquently and movingly to an international audience.”

Spreading Hatred of Israel

On July 25, 2021, Emsais tweeted: “I propose we now use a TW [trigger warning] against isr*elis because they prove to be nothing but ridiculous…”

Emsais retweeted an August 5, 2020 tweet that read: “it’s f**k israel until my last breath on god.”

On July 1, 2020, Emsais tweeted, accusing Israel of “occupation,” “apartheid,” “colonizing Palestine” and “ethnic cleansing.”

On June 23, 2020, Emsais shared a Reuters article to Twitter and commented: “Isra*lis are nothing but pathological liars who have no regard to human life and timelessly try to justify the unwarranted killings of Palestinians by their brainwashed colonized agenda.”

The article was titled “Palestinian driver shot dead after alleged car-ramming on Israeli police” and referred to Ahmad Erakat [Ahmad Moustafa Erekat], who was killed by Israeli security forces after Erakat accelerated and rammed his car into soldiers at a checkpoint, injuring a female soldier.

On June 3, 2020, invoking the Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) “Deadly Exchange” campaign, Emsais tweeted: “If people really want the violent enforcement operations of American police to stop, then the exchange programs of police from America to Israel needs to be ceased. That’s where the American police are actually being trained and are taught to use deadly tactics with any situation.”

In 2017, JVP launched the “Deadly Exchange” (DX) campaign, accusing American Jewish organizations of promoting human rights abuses by coordinating exchange programs between American and Israeli security personnel to advance “worst practices" and racist policies. The campaign blamed [00:04:04] Jewish organizations for violence against Black and Brown communities, immigrants and activists in the U.S.

On May 31, 2020, Emsais tweeted: “The cops in America are trained by the IDF [Israel Defense Forces], they use the exact inhumane and overly aggressive tactics from its propagandized instruction. Cops only know how to act in violent ways because they were taught to treat every encounter as means of ‘counterterrorism’ They never learn.”

Supporting BDS

On July 19, 2021, Emsais tweeted: “Y’all know we still gotta boycott until they completely divest right.” Emsais’s tweet featured a link to another tweet from Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream announcing the company would end sales of its ice cream “in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

On July 19, 2021, ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s announced it would stop all product sales in “Occupied Palestinian Territory.” The BDS movement celebrated the decision, calling on the ice cream company to boycott the State of Israel in its entirety. However, company owner Unilever overrode the subsidiary’s decision after multiple US states decided to divest public funds from Unilever.

On May 12, 2021, Emsais tweeted: “BDS is a movement that Palestinians have been constantly mentioning but apparently it’s all forgotten when someone wants to eat Ben & Jerry’s.”

Emsais retweeted a May 12, 2021 tweet that read: “One of the ways to help with the situation in Palestine is to participate in BDS. It’s easy to think that means just not buying Israeli food, but think bigger. Convince your boss to buy pencils from a non-Israeli country. Convince your priest to not do the trip to the Holy Land.”

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
