Whitewashing Terrorism
On October 16, 2020, an 18-year-old Chechen Muslim refugee in France beheaded a school teacher in a suburb of Paris. The teacher had been teaching a lesson on freedom of expression around the caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, published by the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.Borenstein tweeted: “What I thought was a BS meme is an actual real tweet from the IDF. This is so disgusting. Stop criminalizing people who want to be liberated from colonialism.”
Bornstien followed up tweeting: “Also: what conditions led to people resisting like this in the first place? There are anti-Semites in the Palestinian liberation movement but what conditions created that hatred. Hint: actual ethnic cleansing in the name of Judaism.”
Encouraging Violence
On February 23, 2019, Borenstein tweeted at a conservative media pundit and said: “Y’all deserved to get punched and harassed for your regressive af [as f**k] views that are a detriment to marginalized people everywhere. #TalkS**tGetHit.”Supporting Anti-Israel Agitators
On April 29, 2019, Borenstein tweeted: “The fact that people equate legitimate critiques of Israel’s apartheid policies of @IlhanMN with the massacre of Jews praying on Shabbos by white supremacists is awful and anyone that blames her for that kind of violence is racist and only creating more antisemitism.”On March 5, 2019, Borenstein tweeted: “#IStandWithIlhan. I as a Jewish person know when someone is saying or doing something anti-Semitic. Omar did something brave, justified, backed by truth, and f**king necessary to challenge the apartheid state of Israel.”
Borenstein’s tweet referred to a March 1, 2019 event where Omar suggested that supporters of Israel were disloyal to America, saying [00:00:42]: “I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is OK for people to push for allegiance to a foreign country.”
Following Omar’s March 1, 2019 presentation at Busboys&Poets TownHall, then-Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Elliot Engel, issued an online statement describing Omar’s comments [00:04:08] as a “vile anti-Semitic slur,” as well as “unacceptable and deeply offensive.”
On February 12, 2019, Borenstein tweeted: “Calling out AIPAC for funding apartheid is not anti-Semitic. In fact, it is incredibly justified and necessary. Thank you to @IlhanMN for your immense bravery #FreePalestine.”
On March 26, 2018, Borenstein tweeted: “I used to have very awful and harmful views about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and I apologize to anyone who had to deal with my terrible takes.”

Opposing the Recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital
On December 7, 2017, Borenstein tweeted: “I hate how tons of Jews are happy about Jerusalem being recognized as Israel’s capitol while Pirkei Avot literally says to stay as far away from politics as possible. Great job taking on traits of the dominant culture (imperialism) #FreePalestine.”On May 14, 2018, Borenstein tweeted: “The Jewish return to Jerusalem/Israel is supposed to be through Jews becoming completely righteous. Not through a disgusting use of disproportionate force. Today is a truly awful day #NewNakba.”
Borensten was responding to a tweet about the U.S. embassy opening in Jerusalem that claimed: “Israeli soldiers are conducting a massacre on the Gaza border.”
On May 16, 2018, a Hamas senior official, Salah al-Bardawil, stated that 50 out of 62 protesters killed during the May 14 Gaza border protest were Hamas operatives. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) also claimed that three of its members were killed at the same protest.
Also on May 14, 2018, Borenstein tweeted: “I am truly ashamed of all the Jews celebrating the moving of the US embassy and the subsequent massacre of Palestinians in Gaza. This is a horrible shande and I condemn it wholeheartedly. This is not the Judaism I learned in Hebrew school.”
On March 30, 2018, some 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza approached Israel’s border to take part in “Land Day Protests” or the “March of Return.” The violent demonstrations were instigated by Hamas on the Israeli-Gaza border. Participants declared their intention to harm Jews across the border under the pretext of “peaceful resistance.”
March participants sent scores of kites bearing explosive devices across Israel’s border to burn Israeli crops and homes. Rioters also made numerous attempts to breach Israel’s border fence, which caused the Israeli Defense Forces to respond with live fire.
Spreading Hatred of Israel
On June 11, 2019, Borenstein tweeted: “Supporting Israel means supporting fascism chavivi [my friend].”On June 9, 2019, Borenstein wrote an article for Liberation News, a socialist newspaper, titled: “‘Walk for Israel’ PR effort doesn’t fool Denver’s anti-apartheid protesters.”
In his article, Borenstein claimed a Denver Zionist group planned a charity walk “to obscure the crimes committed by the apartheid state of Israel.” Borenstein alleged the speakers tried to ignore “Israel’s worst human rights abuses by claiming it was not a ‘political’ endorsement of all (!) Israeli ethnic cleansing actions and policies.”
Borenstein discussed the upcoming Israeli election and claimed that “candidates across the board celebrated the murder and expulsion of Palestinians with openly fascistic rhetoric” and accused the Israeli Labor party of “pledging loyalty to the racist-Zionist cause.”
Borenstein continued to blame: “Israeli occupation forces” for having “killed or injured thousands of protestors including EMTs, journalists, and children in response to the peaceful Great March of Return movement in the Gaza Strip, which rallied against Israel’s illegally constructed apartheid wall .”
Media reports confirmed [00:00:20] the March of Return protesters’ breaches and attempted breaches of Israel’s border fence, some by armed Palestinians. Senior Hamas official Mahmoud Al-Zahhar said that the Gaza protests were under a pretext of “peaceful resistance.”
Another Hamas leader declared [00:00:30]: “We will take down the border [with Israel] and we will tear out their hearts from their bodies.”
Borenstein additionally claimed: “Vigilante terror carried out by Israeli settlers in illegal West Bank colonial outposts is rampant.”
On March 8, 2019, Borenstein tweeted: “You can’t say that you support women/femme folks if you support capitalism, US imperialism, racism, transphobia, and/or Israeli apartheid. Happy #InternationalWomenDay2019.”
On May 2, 2017, Borenstein tweeted: “This #YomHaZikaron think about how many Israelis died in the name of legitimizing apartheid for bourgeois colonial interests.”
Israel’s Memorial Day, known as “Yom Hazikaron,” is dedicated to remembering Israel’s fallen soldiers and to commemorating civilian victims of terrorism.
Demonizing Israel

Never surprising, but always disheartening.”
On March 5, 2019, Borenstein tweeted: “ON TOP of that the moderator was banning/blocking anyone that said that Israel uses pinkwashing for political gain, which it literally f**king does.”
Borenstein continued: “Anyone who dismisses pinkwashing as anti-Semitic is 1) wrong and 2) is pushing a false narrative that Israel doesn’t use identity politics in the most exploitative way to cover up its crimes as an apartheid state #FreePalestine.”
“Pinkwashing” is a claim that Israel advocates manipulate the LGBTQ community in order to garner support for Israel.
On September 19, 2018, Borenstein tweeted: “Being an anti-Zionist Jew during Yom Kippur (or any time for that matter) is so frustrating. Hearing sermons about justice and changing yourself all while being told to blindly support the apartheid state of Israel is disheartening af (as f**k) #FreePalestine.”
On May 17, 2018, Borenstein tweeted: “Israel REALLY has to make some amazing reaches and racist generalizations to justify violence and genocide #PalestinianLivesMatter #Gaza.”
On March 26, 2018, Borenstein tweeted: “Actually yes Israel does indiscriminately bomb Palestinians and kicks them out of their homes.”
Borenstein was responding to one of his own tweets, dated March 27, 2016 which said: “...Hamas spends money on bombs and not infrastructure to protect civilians. The IDF doesn’t indiscriminately bomb Palestinians.”
On June 2, 2017, Borenstein tweeted: “That's absolutely true. Israel has a white supremacy complex that is reflected in their legal/social system.”
Demonizing America
In October, 2020, Borenstein tweeted that he had his students make protest signs as an assignment. Condemning Jewish Heritage Tour
On May 15, 2019, Borenstein tweeted: “3 years ago I went on Birthright. On that trip we never learned about the struggle and oppression of the Palestinian people let alone the fact that the first day of our trip was the same day as the Nakhba. This is how Israeli apartheid continues in the Jewish community: erasure.”On June 22, 2018, Borenstein tweeted: “3) After reflecting on my trip, I totally regret contributing to the Israeli hasbara machine. But I’m also grateful I got to go because it completely changed my perspective of Israel and how racist a place it is.”
On October 17, 2017, Borenstein tweeted: “Birthright and yeshiva in Jerusalem afterwards made me realize how unbelievably racist Israeli society is. Like, super f**king racist.”
On April 5, 2019, Borenstein shared a tweet from IfNotNow and commented: “@birthright refuses to engage with anyone, particularly the Jewish people they claim to represent, that questions Israel's racist apartheid state. They would rather arrest us than critically engage with Israeli occupation and fascist policies.”
Birthright Israel is a heritage trip to Israel for Jewish young adults from across the world.
Supporting BDS
On August 21, 2018, Borenstein tweeted: “#LanaDontGo. Please don't support apartheid.”Artists Lana Del Ray ultimately cancelled her planned performance at a music festival in Israel due to pressure from BDS activists.
On July 29, 2019, Borenstein tweeted: “‘Why not boycott Egypt?’ BECAUSE ISRAEL IS THE ONE DESTROYING PALESTINIANS RIGHT TO BASIC HUMAN DIGNITY YOU ABSOLUTE F**KING WANK!!!”
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
