Alejandro Villa Vásquez authored violent tweets that caused the temporary closure of The Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life at NYU. He also compared Israelis to Nazis and expressed violent hatred of Zionists following the 2018 passage of a Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) resolution at New York University (NYU). He also shared tweets about Hitler while in high school.

Also as of August 2019, Vásquez’s LinkedIn page said he was an Editorial Intern for Cambridge University Press since May 2019 and a Fundraiser for Ruffalo Noel Levitz in New York City, NY, developing and university alumni relations. Ruffalo Noel Levitz provides enrollment management services for colleges and universities.

Vásquez’s LinkedIn page also said he was an Office Assistant at NYU Silver School of Social Work (NYU Silver), in 2018.

Violent Anti-Zionist Tweets

In December 2018, potentially threatening social media postings by Vásquez caused the temporary closure of The Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life at NYU.

One example of Vásquez’s since-deleted tweets read: “thanks to whoever got my account suspended just cuz i expressed my desire for zionists to die .and f**k twitter for not doing a better job of deleting entire accounts that do nothing but tweet violently racist things.”

On December 12, 2018, Rabbi Yehuda Sarna, Skirball Executive Director of The Edgar M. Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life at NYU, sent an email addressed to the NYU community, referring to Vasquez’s postings.

Rabbi Sarna’s email alerted students that he had “become aware of several public online postings by an NYU student which were antisemitic in nature and potentially threatening” and announced a temporary closure of the Center until further notice.

Also on December 12, 2018, Sarna sent a second email stating: “The Bronfman Center has consulted with NYU Public Safety, NYPD, and other security experts in the Jewish community. Based on their assessments, the building has reopened.”

That same day, Vásquez reportedly privated his Twitter account and deleted the offending tweets, then re-opened his account, tweeting: “in case anyone is confused about what im being accused of” and included an image of a statement he made on the issue.

The image of his statement said: “I expressed extremely aggressive views towards Zionists because they believe in the genocide of ethnic and religious minorities...My views reflect the racist and Islamophobic principles intrinsic in Zionism...To anyone that genuinely feels scared, I”m sorry.”

Following his violent tweets, WSN issued a statement denouncing Vásquez. The statement said: “It has come to WSN’s attention that tweets and posts written by a former editor of the newspaper have stirred fear in the Jewish community at NYU and caused the temporary closing of the Bronfman Center. We wanted to clarify that the editor in question no longer works for WSN, and we do not condone the statements made in the aforementioned tweets and posts.”

NYU Silver also denounced Vásquez on Twitter following the exposure of his violent tweets, writing: “NYU Silver condemns #HateSpeech of any kind by anyone. Alejandro Villa Vasquez does not work for NYU Silver and the language in his post is antithetical to social work.”

Vásquez earlier tweeted that he was “no longer affiliated with @.nyunews and I haven’t worked at silver in MONTHS, nor have I ever claimed to be an activist .my tweet came after my time with either entity. Don’t come for a journalist until you know how to fact check!”

NYU JVP also denounced Vásquez on Twitter, writing: “We are not affiliated with NYU student Alejandro Villa Vazquez. This individual’s threats against the Jewish community puts us all in danger and must be taken seriously.”

NYU SJP issued a statement against Alejandro on Medium: “An NYU student, Alejandro Villa Vazquez, has made several remarks that are not only anti-Semitic, but outright normalize violence directed at the Jewish community at NYU and at large...Vazquez is in no form connected to or affiliated with NYU SJP/JVP — he is not a member of our OrgSync page nor has he ever attended a single one of our meetings.”

Comparing Israelis to Nazis

On July 29, 2019, Vásquez tweeted comparing the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to the Gestapo: “but yeah the IDF is a reincarnation of the gestapo remember to mercilessly ostracize supporters of israel on your college campus this coming school year.”

The Gestapo were the official secret police of Nazi Germany.

Spreading Hatred of Zionists

In addition to potentially violent tweets, he has also spread hatred of Zionists on social media.

On December 7, 2018, Vásquez wrote on Facebook: “BDS passed -- I hope every zionist kkkunt @nyu is crying right now.”

Vásquez made the post after NYU’s Student Government Assembly (SGA) passed a BDS resolution co-authored by members of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and then-student senators Rose Asaf, Leen Dweik and then-student senator Bayan Abubakr, who was reportedly a member ofNYU SJP.

On December 4, 2018, Vásquez wrote on Facebook: “I didn’t realize so many people supported genocide at NYU...Realize Israel keeps equivocating support for Palestine with hatred for Jewish people, which is the falsest equivalency I’ve ever heard of. You *can* however equate support for the Israeli tyranny with supporting the extermination of countless Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims.”

On October 29, 2018, Vásquez tweeted: “remember to spit on zionists, it’s proper etiquette.”

On October 23, 2018, Vásquez posted an article to Facebook titled: “30 NYU Clubs Pledge ‘Non-Cooperation’ With NYU Tel Aviv” and wrote: “F**k Israel”

On October 11, 2018, Vásquez tweeted: “there are people at nyu that are zionist and to this day i can’t wrap my f**king head around it”

On May 1, 2018, Vásquez posted to Facebook: “Any nasty Zionists, please unfriend me!You’re stinking up the TL [timeline]!”

Hitler-Related Tweets from High School

On April 30, 2014, Vásquez tweeted: “The sons of Adolph Hitler's nephew made a pact to never have children, ending the Hitler bloodline. ‘would luv a classmate named john hitler.’”

On June 11, 2014, Vásquez tweeted: “‘@UberFacts: Hitler's plan for Moscow was to kill all its residents and cover it with an artificial lake.’that's my plan for deer park :)”

On June 17, 2014, Vásquez tweeted: “@xanaxprincesa no you were inside a beige colored egg w. everyone else & you came out the womb of chaos of overlord hitler”

The same day, Vásquez tweeted: “before taking the pre ap world final remember that none of that s**t happened & we were all born from the same egg laid by hitler.”

NYU SJP 2018 Divestment Campaign

On November 1, 2018, members of NYU SJP presented a divestment bill to the NYU Student Government Association (SGA), to further the agenda of the Boycott, Divestment Sanctions (BDS) movement.

The resolution was co-authored by then-student senators and members of SJP, Rose Asaf, Leen Dweik and then-student senator Bayan Abubakr, who was reportedly a member ofNYU SJP.

The resolution demonized Israel, invoked the “threefold” goals of the BDS movement and was passed by the SGA on December 6, 2018, using a secret ballot. NYU’s administration opposed the BDS resolution.

NYU’s then-President Andrew Hamilton said: “‘A boycott of Israeli academics and institutions is contrary to our core principles of academic freedom, antithetical to the free exchange of ideas, and at odds with the University's position on this matter...and divestment from Israeli-related investments is not under consideration.’”

NYU SJP Promoting BDS

On April 15, 2019, NYU SJP hosted an event featuring a panel that included Omar Barghouti. The panel was moderated by Leen Dweik, then-President of NYU SJP.

Barghouti, the founder of the BDS movement, has claimed [00:04:28] that international law grants everyone with Palestinian ancestry the unqualified right to settle in Israel. Barghouti has also insisted [01:18:21]that the demands of BDS are “inflexible” and “non-negotiable,” and if people object, then “tough.”

A day later, NYU SJP posted the video from the event on Facebook and wrote: “Omar Barghouti just called NYU student capitol of the BDS movement of the world!!! We are WINNING!”

On November 19, 2018, NYU SJP wrote on Facebook: “When we fight, we win.BDS works” and attached an article in the post reporting the decision by Airbnb Inc. to remove listings in Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

On October 24. 2018, NYU SJP hosted a panel about BDS where anti-Israel Professor Jasbir Puar was listed among the panel of speakers. Puar is on the Advisory Board of the U.S. Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (USACBI) and applauded the American Studies Association (ASA)’s move for an Academic Boycott of Israeli universities.

NYU SJP hosted NYU Israel Apartheid Week (IAW) 2018, from April 15-21, 2018. The Facebook event description said: “IAW will be an opportunity to reflect on this history of resistance and further advance BDS campaigns for the continued growth and impact of the movement.”

On April 9, 2018, NYU SJP posted to Facebook: “We are proud to announce a coalition of 50 NYU student groups who have pledged to support the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement for Palestinian human rights by pledging not to spend NYU club funds on Israeli goods, to boycott pro-Israel groups at NYU and off campus, and to call on NYU to divest from companies that profit off the violation of Palestinian human rights.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
