Jewish Voice for Peace Philadelphia is part of the anti-Zionist Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) organization, which has a network of 70 chapters nationwide that “proudly” endorse the antisemitic Boycott, Divest and Sanction (BDS) movement against Israel.
JVP also supports the “right of return” of all Palestinian refugees, a claim which is, in essence, a means to totally eliminate the state of Israel.
JVP Philly partners with virulently anti-Israel and antisemitic groups such as Students for Justice in Palestine, both for ideological reasons and as a way to provide cover for these antisemitic groups whose goal is to detroy the state of Israel.
Over the course of five months in 2021, JVP Philly engaged in a harassment campaign against Jeffrey Yass, a Philadelphia philanthropist.
The campaign began on May 21, 2021 when JVP Philly activists staged a sit-in at Yass’ business in Philadelphia. Protesters held banners outside the company’s office accusing Yass and his partner, Arthur Dantchik, of “funding genocide, apartheid and ethnic cleansing” in Israel.
Occupying the lobby of the building, the group chanted, “Israeli apartheid is funded here, Jews say free Palestine.” In a Facebook live stream from the protest, JVP’s deputy director, Alissa Wise, declared, “I’m here today to tell Jeffrey Yass and Arthur Dantchik that they are complicit in the genocide of Palestinians.”
JVP Philly activists placed flyers on the cars of Yass’ employees, accusing Israel of “the ethnic cleansing” and “violent murder and destruction” of Palestinians. The flyers accused Yass and Dantchik of funding “Israeli apartheid.”
The protest ended with Wise leaving a voicemail on Yass’ personal number, saying, “What you’re doing to the Palestinian people is a shanda [disgrace] … we’re really disgusted by what you’re funding and we want to urge you to cease funding it now … and we’ll keep coming back as long as it takes.”
On June 4, 2021, the group ramped up its protest against Yass, taking it to Yass’ home. Placing a giant banner on Yass’ lawn that stated, “ISRAEL APARTHEID FUNDED HERE,” dozens of JVP activists, some of whom who had brought their children, set up tables and chairs on Yass’ private property directly opposite the front door and proceeded to conduct a mock Sabbath meal.
Speakers, using a megaphone, accused Yass of “funding continued ethnic cleasing of the Palestinian people” and demanded that he stop supporting pro-Israel initiatives. Participants responded by banging on the table yelling “shame.”
In a Facebook live stream of the protest, Wise declared, “Last week we were at his office … this week we’re at his house because his employees, his staff, his colleagues, his neighbors, they know what he’s doing.”
She continued, “We must build outrage in everyone in his community until we get what we want.”
JVP Philly activists returned to Yass’ house on September 23, 2021 during the Jewish festival of Sukkot. They erected a mock sukkah (a tent-like structure) on Yass’ lawn and held large signs that read, “YASS FUNDS FASCISTS,” “YASS FUNDS ISRAELI APARTHEID,” “YASS CASH HARMS OUR PLANET” and “YASS CASH HARMS OUR SCHOOLS.”
At the protest, dubbed “#AllEyesOnYass,” Wise, equipped with a megaphone, said, “We are everywhere, we’re gonna keep coming back because Yass … hello, can you hear us, indicate if you can hear us, you are funding apartheid, and that is wrong and shameful.” She then led the crowd in yelling “boooo.”
Wise then addressed Yass’ neighbors, saying, “Hi neighbors, we’re here because Jeffrey Yass, your neighbor, is funding Israeli apartheid.”
JVP Philly activists also passed out flyers to Yass’ neighbors stating that Yass was financing “Israeli apartheid policies which cause great harm to Palestinians and any possibility of peace in the region.”
The flyer asked, “TIRED OF SEEING US HERE? TELL JEFF HIS CHOICES ARE NOT JUST HARMING THE WORLD, THEY’RE BUGGING HIS NEIGHBORS TOO. MAYBE THAT WILL MAKE HIM CHANGE HIS WAYS!”
JVP Philly’s modus operandi is to whitewash terrorism committed against Israelis while simultaneously spreading false narratives about the Jewish state.
Take, for example, a tweet put out by JVP and pushed by JVP Philly: “Another day, another Palestinian child murdered … Samah Mubarak was killed by the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] at a checkpoint for an alleged ‘knife attack’...”
Samah Mubarak was shot and later died after she tried to stab an Israeli security officer on January 30, 2019 at a checkpoint outside Jerusalem. Security camera footage, which was widely publicized, clearly shows the attempted stabbing.
JVP Philly’s whitewashing of terrorism is most apparent in their continued support of the violent Palestinian protest on Israel’s Gaza border that began in the spring of 2018.
Dubbed the “March of Return,” the terror group Hamas organized and funded a campaign of violent protests to spotlight their demand for the “right of return” to Israel.
During the protests, Palestinian protesters threw Molotov cocktails, shot firearms and sent scores of kites outfitted with explosives across the border to burn Israeli crops and homes. The kites alone caused millions of dollars in property damage.
When protesters tried to breach the border fence, Israeli Defense Forces responded with live fire after numerous warnings.
On May 14, 2018, Israel’s Independence Day, JVP Philly held a rally to condemn Israel’s response to the riots and protested the raising of the Israeli flag at Philadelphia’s City Hall.
During a live stream of the event on Facebook, a JVP activist said, “We’re here ‘cuz we think it’s a disgrace that our public officials are celebrating 70 years of occupation and apartheid and turning a blind eye to violence against unarmed protesters.”
The group then read the names of each March of Return protester who was killed. After each name, JVP activists chanted “... was a freedom fighter and he taught us how to fight.”
On May 16, 2018, two days after a particularly aggressive and violent protest, a senior Hamas official stated that 50 out of 62 protesters killed during a May 14 March of Return protest were Hamas operatives. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), another terror group, claimed that three of its members were killed at the same protest.
Five days later, JVP Philly held another rally in support of the March of Return “freedom fighters.” At the event, a JVP Philly activist read from poetry by terror supporter Dareen Tatour and led the other JVP Philly protesters in chanting Tatour’s words, “Resist, my people, resist them; resist, my people, resist them.”
JVP Philly tweeted from the protest, “We mourn the deaths of all the Palestinians who have been murdered by the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] since the beginning of the #GreatReturnMarch. #Gaza.”
The next year, on March 30, 2019, JVP Philly held a memorial event to commemorate and honor those killed during the March of Return the previous year. The Facebook description for the event falsely claimed, “Since March 30th, 2018 tens of thousands of Palestinians have marched peacefully every Friday along the Gaza/Israel border…”
An email sent out by JVP Philly promoting the event described it as, “A Martyrology Inspired Memorial Teach-In.”
On April 17, 2017, JVP Philly promoted on their Facebook page an article written by Marwan Barghouti titled: “Why We Are on Hunger Strike in Israel’s Prisons.”
Barghouti was the leader of the Palestinian Authority (PA) terrorist Tanzim force and founded the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. He is currently serving five consecutive life sentences in Israel for his role in suicide bombings and shooting attacks that killed five Israelis during the Second Intifada.
The group subsequently promoted a JVP-national event featuring the organization’s then Executive Director Rebecca Vilkomerson interviewing Marwan Barghouti’s son.
JVP and their leaders are enamored with Palestinian terrorist Rasmea Odeh, who, before her deportation from the United States, was a featured speaker at a 2017 JVP National Member Meeting (NMM).
Odeh was a military operative with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), an internationally and U.S.-designated terrorist organization. In 1969, she masterminded a bombing that killed two university students in a Jerusalem supermarket. Odeh also attempted to bomb the British consulate.
After her arrest, Odeh confessed, giving Israeli authorities a highly detailed account of the operation. In 1970 was convicted for her involvement in both bombings and given a life sentence. Yet, she was released 10 years later in a prisoner swap and immigrated illegally to the United States. In 2017, the United States deported Odeh after she admitted to immigration fraud.
Despite her history, JVP Philly stood behind Odeh. On March 14, 2017, JVP Philly posted a JVP press release on Facebook titled “JEWISH VOICE FOR PEACE IS PROUD TO HOST PALESTINIAN ORGANIZER RASMEA ODEH.” Commenting on the press release, JVP Philly wrote, “A powerful, informative statement about the trials of Rasmea Odeh.”
JVP’s national membership meeting website that year featured Odeh and referred to her as a “deeply respected Palestinian organizer” and “feminist leader,” claiming that accusations against her stemmed from “anti-Palestinian and anti-Muslim persecution.”
The website further declared, “Rasmea’s life is a story of Palestinian resilience: a story of persistence … building grassroots leadership …”
After the NMN, JVP Philly followed up with a Facebook post linking to the NMM sessions, writing, “We missed you so much! Check out Linda Sarsour, Rasmea Odeh, and more here--and hopefully we'll be together at 2019's NMM!”
In 2017, JVP concocted and launched a campaign called the “Deadly Exchange,” which blamed American Jewish organizations for police violence in the United States against black and brown communities, immigrants and activists.
JVP based this campaign on the false claim that mainstream Jewish organizations in the U. S. were bringing American police to Israel to learn “worst practices” and “racist policies.” Participants in the program testified that this accusation couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Anti-Israel organizations as well as white supremacists eagerly helped JVP disseminate this antisemitic lie.
JVP Philly joined the lie locally. On October 22, 2017, the group held a protest against the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a premier Jewish organization that has been dedicated to fighting antisemitism for over a century. The protest was held outside the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference (IACP) in which ADL participated.
JVP Philly said they staged the protest “to demand that the ADL stop funding police exchange programs between the U.S. and Israel.” A Facebook event page advertising the protest alleged, “These exchanges exacerbate racist police violence, militarization, and surveillance both here and in Israel/Palestine...”
On November 8, 2017, JVP Philly held another protest against the ADL in connection with the “Deadly Exchange” campaign. Tweeting from the protest, the group wrote, “‘We're gonna rise up, rise up till it's gone!’”
The group continued rallying against the ADL, staging yet another protest at the ADL’s annual “Walk Against Hate” on June 3, 2018. As ADL representatives spoke at the event, JVP Philly activists stood in front of them holding a large banner that said, “ADL STOP THE HATE END POLICE XCHANGES W/ ISRAEL.”
