• Anti-Israel Protest at University of Michigan - Ann Arbor Was Nothing Short of a Call to Murder Jews

  • A recent anti-Israel protest through the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor was nothing short of a call to murder Jews.

The January 12, 2023 display was staged in protest of the appearance on campus of Vice President Kamala Harris, who was giving a speech on climate policy. Harris is perceived as pro-Israel.

The rally was co-organized by Students Allied for Freedom and Equality (SAFE), University of Detroit Mercy SJP (UDM SJP), Wayne State University SJP (SJP WSU) and Students United for Palestinian Rights (SUPR) at Michigan State University (MSU).

SAFE is the name of the UMich-Ann Arbor SJP chapter and SUPR is the name of MSU’s SJP chapter.

  • Joseph Fisher, Nooralhuda Sami and Salma Hamamy led anti-Israel chants during the protest. Other participants in the rally included Seliman Ali, Yousef Turk and Lina Mahmoud.

As rally participants marched toward the auditorium where Harris was scheduled to speak, Fisher and Sami led chants, screaming, “Justice is our demand, no peace on stolen land!" and “Intifada, intifada! Long live the intifada!”

The term Intifada connotes a violent “uprising” or “insurrection.” Israel has experienced waves of Intifadas over the last decades. During these Initfadas, over 1,300 Israelis were bombed, shot and stoned to death by Palestinian terrorists. Many thousands more were maimed and injured.

  • Evoking Nazi Rhetoric

  • The protests also evoked Nazi rhetoric. Hamamy, while marching alongside Fisher and Sami, held a sign that read: “THERE IS ONLY ONE SOLUTION, Intifada Revolution!” while Sami and Fisher led chanting of the same slogan.

Sami and Fisher also chanted the infamous slogan, “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free,” a call for the destruction of the entire state of Israel (from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea).

When the crowd arrived outside the auditorium where Harris was speaking, Fisher and Hamamy led rally participants in chanting, “Hey hey, ho ho, the Zionists have got to go!”

Fisher then gave a speech where he called Israel “the violent Zionist entity” and accused Israel of being “one of the most vicious perpetrators” of environmental destruction in the world.

  • Fisher also called Israel a “violent settler apartheid regime.”

In the words of Hollywood producer and columnist Daniella Greenbaum Davis, “The first and second intifada saw terrorists brutally murder innocent civilians. Can’t even imagine being a Jew on Michigan’s campus right now.”
