TWITTER’S BIZARRE SANCTION OF ANTI-SEMITISM WATCHDOG CANARY MISSION
Enclosed is a quick summary, the full story, a disturbing sub-plot.
SUMMARY
- On July 5, 2017, Niveen
Nabulsi tweeted: “We’re bonding with our Uber driver over our hatred for Zionists and how they control the media. He’s also pro-Palestinian and Muslim #bless”
- On October 8, 2018, Canary Mission tweeted: “.@thisisuic student Niveen Nabulsi @niv33n enjoyed her uber ride: ‘We’re bonding with our Uber driver over our hatred for Zionists and how they control the media.’ #AntiSemitism”
- After Nabulsi complained to Twitter, Canary Mission’s account was locked for highlighting her bigotry.
- Canary Mission has submitted three separate appeals.
- Twitter has baselessly rejected all three appeals so far - all with generic responses - each robotic rejection bizarrely accuses Canary Mission, not the perpetrator.
- Nabulsi’s anti-Semitic
tweet is shockingly still live and unsanctioned.
- This is not the first time that Twitter has shown anti-Semitic Bias when dealing with Canary Mission. On May 4, 2017, the Canary Mission Twitter account tweeted the following: “@utarlington’s Ahmed Ellahi @dallasmau5 modified Adele’s lyrics to say “Set Fire to the Jews.”
- On March 3rd, 2018, Twitter locked the Canary Mission account citing, Canary Mission’s exposure of Ellahi’s anti-Semitic tweet.
- After a public uproar, Twitter reinstated the tweet. Now, once again Twitter has repeated its previous action, siding with anti-Semitism.
- As a disturbing sub-plot, Canary Mission received a fake email 2 days prior to Nabulsi’s complaint to Twitter, very likely from Nabulsi herself. The email claimed to be from an official at her university, UIC.
After Canary Mission called out, WORD-FOR-WORD, an egregious example of anti-Semitism, Twitter locked Canary Mission’s account… and not the perpetrators!
On July 5, 2017, Niveen Nabulsi tweeted: “We’re bonding with our Uber driver over our hatred for Zionists and how they control the media. He’s also pro-Palestinian and Muslim #bless”
On October 8, 2018, Canary Mission tweeted: “.@thisisuic student Niveen Nabulsi @niv33n enjoyed her uber ride: ‘We’re bonding with our Uber driver over our hatred for Zionists and how they control the media.’ #AntiSemitism”
Canary Mission’s account is locked, Nabulsi’s is live.
When Canary Mission’s account was first locked, we were certain it had to be a mistake. Twitter claimed that we had violated their rules on hateful conduct, and we knew we had done nothing of the sort. Nabulsi however clearly had. We assumed it was therefore a case of mistaken identity - that they had meant to lock Nabulsi’s account mistakenly locked ours.
To our shock, our appeal was rejected, our account lock stood and Nabulsi’s account (including her bigoted tweet) remained live.
We appealed a second time, sending them the link to Nabulsi’s tweet. We received a similar robotic response.
For our third appeal, our strategy changed, we wanted to understand Twitter’s thinking. Would they own their decision? Would they explain to Jews around the world why Twitter gives anti-Semitism a platform, but calling out anti-Semitism is sanctioned?
Once again, we received a robotic reply.
Canary Mission, our supporters and Jews at large deserve better. Twitter’s behavior is offensive. Nabulsi has engaged in classic anti-Semitism and Twitter stands by her. Twitter stands with anti-Semitism.
Not The First Time Twitter Has Sided
with Anti-Semitism
This is not the first time that Twitter has shown support for outrageous anti-Semitism when dealing with Canary Mission. On May 4, 2017, the Canary Mission Twitter account tweeted the following:
“@utarlington’s Ahmed Ellahi @dallasmau5 modified Adele’s lyrics to say “Set Fire to the Jews.”
On March 3rd, 2018, Twitter locked the Canary Mission account citing, Canary Mission’s exposure of Ellahi’s anti-Semitic tweet.
After a public uproar, Twitter reinstated our tweet.
Farrakhan Tweet
The recent episode is especially amazing given Twitter’s scandalous decision to leave rabid anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan online: Twitter
says it won't suspend Louis Farrakhan over tweet comparing Jews to termites

Anti-Defamation League 2018 Report The Anti-Defamation League’s 2018 report on rampant anti-Semitism on Twitter, explained, “anti-Semitic tweets will often employ the term “Zionist” as a stand-in for “Jew,” in a context that clearly indicates the tweet was either motivated by anti-Semitism or perpetuated anti-Semitic themes...the term “Zionist” [is] used in a manner that incorporated classic anti-Semitic language or themes, including allegations that Jews hate non-Jews and control the media and financial and cultural institutions.” Nabulsi’s tweet is a clear-cut example, yet Twitter staff are giving this nasty form of anti-Semitism a voice while stifling protest. Fake Email Finally, as an interesting and disturbing side-note, two days before Canary Mission was sanctioned for calling out Nabulsi’s tweet, Canary Mission received a fake email purporting to be from the UIC Deans Office. The email promised that she would be removing her offensive tweets. However, her account remains live and proudly anti-Semitic.
