Robert Lange

Overview

Robert Lange [Robert V. Lange / Bob Lange] was criticized for his comments defending terrorism and justifying violence against Israeli soldiers, in an uncovered listserv at Brandeis University (Brandeis).

Lange is an Associate Professor, Emeritus of Physics and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Heller School at Brandeis.

As of September 2020, Lange’s LinkedIn page said he was the President of The International Collaborative for Science, Education, and the Environment (ICSEE), from 1986 to the present and indicated that the organization was located in Annapolis Maryland and in Tanzania. As of the same date, the organization’s website said it was founded in 1992. The organization’s tax documents indicate it is officially headquartered in Massachusetts.

Brandeis reported that in 2007 Lange visited Al Quds University and worked on the Effective Teaching Exchange to “further develop partnerships in the sciences.”

Brandies terminated the relationship between the universities in October 2013, following Al Quds university administration’s response to a Nazi-themed demonstration held by the designated terror group Islamic Jihad at the university.

According to his LinkedIn page, Lange received his bachelor’s degree from CalTech in Physics, a Ph.D. from Harvard University in Theoretical Physics and was a Postdoctoral fellow at Oxford University in Theoretical Physics.

Defending Terrorism

In July 2014, it was reported that Brandeis had an internal listserv utilized by its faculty that showed a group of professors denigrating Israel and attacking Brandeis’ Jewish leadership.

Professors on the faculty listserv reportedly shared false stories about Israel harvesting organs and used anti-Semitic terms to describe Brandeis’s Jewish leaders, calling one “fuhrer.”

Lange was quoted as writing on the listserv that "It is not terrorism to kill representatives of a government that you are opposed to." Lange was further quoted asstating: "If an Israeli soldier protecting a settlement is killed by Palestinian militants, it is not terrorism."

He reportedly also maintained that the 2012 terrorist attack on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, which killed four people and injured ten others, was “not terrorism.”

In another uncovered e-mail from the listserv, Lange was quoted as stating that “settlements on the West Bank are armed robbery.”

Demonizing Israel

Lange was listed as a signatory on a February, 2009 open letter published on Political Groove that was titled: “Open Letter to Israeli Soldiers - Jews call to stop War Crimes.”

The letter Lange signed said: “If you are Jewish, please sign the following statement, which we hope to be able to publish soon in Israeli newspapers.”

Lange and his fellow signatories also stated: “We refuse to remain silent while Israeli leaders force Israeli soldiers to commit war crimes...This criminal activity does nothing to advance the health and welfare of Jews.”

The letter Lange signed concluded: “We members of the international Jewish community call on you, the Israeli soldiers of conscience, to halt the Israeli war machine.”

Supporting BDS

Lange was a signatory on a March 2011 petition from Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America-College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF).

The petition of TIAA-CREF “participants, investors and supporters” were urging a boycott of five companies which the signatories claimed were “profiting from Israelʼs violations of international law and international human rights standards.”

In May 2013, a statement by the TIAA-CREF revealed that the BDS proposal “attempts to embroil CREF in a highly controversial geopolitical dispute of enormous complexity where — unlike the Anti-Genocide Proposals [referring to the universally condemned situation in Sudan] — there is no broad consensus. United States companies are permitted to engage in business dealings in Israel and the West Bank. Indeed, the United States adopted laws designed to discourage and, in some circumstances, prohibit U.S. companies from furthering or supporting foreign boycotts of Israel.”
