Doug Rossinow
Overview
Doug Rossinow has demonized American Zionists and Israel and is a professor in the Department of History at Metropolitan State University (Metro State).Demonizing American Zionists
On March 6, 2018, Rossinow published an article in which he argued that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) was “formed to spin positive PR after Israeli atrocities.”In the article, he described how AIPAC works to “to manage the political fallout... and to prepare for any future shocks coming out of Israel,” and concluded that “‘America’s Pro-Israel Lobby,’ born in awful knowledge, has always existed to make Israeli realities and priorities palatable to Americans.”
Russinow repeated these claims in another article titled “‘The Edge of the Abyss’: The Origins of the Israel Lobby, 1949–1954,” published in March 2018.
In that article, Rossinow argued that “The Israel lobby in the United States was born not only of the needs and desires of Americans, but also of violence and conflict in a place far from American shores.”
Rossinow alleged that AIPAC was created in order “to deny, obscure, or downplay the piercing impact” of violence committed by the Israeli army.
Rossinow went on to claim that AIPAC’s position has been “to defend Israel with new vigor exactly when Israeli actions disturbed observers, both in the United States and elsewhere, most deeply.”
Rossinow then concluded that “Violence by the Israeli state against Palestinians... lies like a hard stone gnarled in the roots of the Israel lobby.”
Rossinow signed an open letter to United States President Barack Obama and the American Congress, dated July 31, 2014, condemning “the disproportionate harm that the Israeli military, which the United States has armed and supported for decades, is inflicting on the population of Gaza.”
The letter exclusively blamed Israel for the Gazan civilian crisis and called upon the administration “to suspend US military aid to Israel, until there is assurance that this aid will no longer be used for the commission of war crimes.”
The letter was in response to Operation Protective Edge (OPE).
The letter was in response to Operation Protective Edge (OPE).
Israel commenced Operation Protective Edge (OPE) in July 2014, to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.
Demonizing Israel
Rossinow signed a controversial petition submitted to the American Historical Association (AHA) in 2016, which alleged that “Israel’s restrictions on the movement of faculty, staff and visitors in the West Bank impede instruction at Palestinian institutions of higher learning,” and that “Israel routinely refuses to allow students from Gaza to travel in order to pursue higher education abroad or at West Bank universities.”The petition went on to demand “That the AHA commits itself to monitoring Israeli actions restricting the right to education in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.”
In 2002, Rossinow signed a petition demanding “Israeli evacuation of all settlements in the occupied territories except those within the agreed swapped areas.”
The petition went on to state that “Our country has an extraordinary leverage on Israeli policy, if only our government would dare to use it. As American Jews... we call on our government to make continued aid conditional on Israeli acceptance of an internationally agreed two-state settlement.”
