Jennifer Brant showed support for the pro-Hamas protest encampment at UofT in May 2024.

As of May 2024, UofT assistant professor Jennifer Brant showed support for the encampment by signing on to a statement put out by UofT community members that month [row 27, last picture on right]. The May 20, 2024 statement was part of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

The statement backed all the encampment’s demands, including divesting from the alleged “apartheid policies of the state of Israel and its ongoing genocide in Gaza.”

To show support, Brant submitted a “support selfie,” where text beside her face said: “DISCLOSE. DIVEST. CUT TIES.” In the selfie, Brant was wearing a keffiyeh, a symbol of Palestinian nationalism.

On May 23, 2024, Brant posted on X a photo of her support selfie and wrote: “Join 200+ hundred faculty, alum, & honourary degree holders in supporting the People’s Circle for Palestine and @occupyuoft’s demands to disclose, divest and cut ties. 🍉emojiCode - 1f1f5-1f1f8 ...”

The watermelon has been appropriated by anti-Israel activists as a symbol of Palestinian "resistance" to "Israeli occupation," as it shares the Pan-Arab colors. It has been depicted in art, used on flags at protests and posted online. It gained popularity following the Hamas terror attacks of October 7, 2023.

UofT is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
