Deborah Cowen
Deborah Cowen [Deb Cowen] spoke at the pro-Hamas encampment at UofT in May 2024. Cowen also expressed support for the encampment in an interview, and showed additional support by signing on to a statement put out by UofT community members.
Cowen attended multiple events at the encampment, which was part of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Cowen appeared in a May 3, 2024 “Global News” video posted to YouTube. In the video, Cowen was interviewed and said [00:01:05]: “...Of course, we also support our students and their demands and, as a Jewish faculty member, I felt it was really important to be here…”
On May 27, 2024, Cowen attended [slide 5] an anti-Israel rally held at the UofT encampment.
On May 28, 2024, Cowen spoke [00:02:18] at an event titled: “Faculty Press Conference,” held at the pro-Hamas encampment at UofT. In Cowen’s speech, Cowen advocated [00:02:23] for the encampment and vowed [00:03:57] “to continue to stand with our students…”
In May 2024, Cowen showed support for the encampment by signing on [row 8, second photo] to a statement put out by UofT community members. The May 20, 2024 statement was part of the BDS movement.
The statement backed all the encampment’s demands, including divesting from the alleged “apartheid policies of the state of Israel and its ongoing genocide in Gaza.” To show support, Cowen submitted a “support selfie,” where text beside the photo said: “DISCLOSE. DIVEST. CUT TIES.”
On June 3, 2024, graduation day at UofT, Cowen attended [slide 7] an anti-Israel ceremony organized by the UofT encampment protesters. They held the event to “honor all of those who could not graduate because of the genocide their university is funding.”
