The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by drawing a comparison to the Holocaust, known in Hebrew as the Shoah, meaning “catastrophe.”
In October 2024, Shokr was listed on the Swarthmore College (Swarthmore) website as an associate professor of history. The website said: “Ahmad Shokr is a historian of the modern Middle East. His teaching and research interests include the political economy of empire and decolonization, the history of capitalism, the history of economic thought, environmental history, and postcolonial state formation.” Swarthmore is located in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.
Also in October 2024, Shokr was affiliated with the Middle East Center at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn), which is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Ahmad Shokr’s protest appearance

On October 21, 2023, protesters held a pro-Hamas rally in central Philadelphia where activists praised Hamas leaders like Abu Obeida. In the march to the rally, activists repeatedly chanted in support of Israel’s destruction and called for “Intifada,” a show of support for terrorism. Chants in Arabic were more explicit as they incited religious violence and proclaimed that the “shahid habib Allah [martyr is beloved by God]!”
One such pro-terror chant also demanding Israel’s destruction was: “There is only one solution! Intifada, Revolution! There is only one solution! Intifada, Revolution! Intifada, Intifada! Long live the Intifada! Intifada, Intifada! Long live the Intifada! From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free! From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free!”
