Spreading Anti-Semitism
Promoting Incitement
On October 5, 2015, retweeted a tweet that said: “The 3rd intifada officially started today.#intifadaAlAqsa.”Since the early 2000s, the term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” has carried the connotation of violence.
In October 2015, there was an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings, known as the “Knife Intifada,” was characterized by young Palestinians throughout the country stabbing and attempting to stab Israeli civilians. The attacks were incited by Palestinian leaders propagating the libel that Israel intended to desecrate the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
On May 15, 2016, Azcona retweeted an NYC SJP tweet that said: “From the river to the sea, intifada! Intifada!! #NakbaDay #Nakba68 #nyc.”
“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is a chant calling to dismantle the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state.
On December 2, 2014, Azcona was tagged in a Facebook post holding a sign that said: “WHEN PEOPLE ARE OCCUPIED RESISTANCE IS JUSTIFIED.”
Expressing Support for Terrorists
On May 25, 2017, Azcona held a sign that said: “Free Ahmad Sa’adat and all Palestinian political prisoners.”Ahmad Sa’adat is the Secretary General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). He is currently sentenced for terror activities, including his role in the 2001 assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze’evi and is in an Israeli prison. Under Sa’adat’s leadership, the PFLP perpetrated many suicide bombings against Israeli civilians during the second intifada.
Azcona held the sign at an NYC SJP protest “in support of Palestinian political prisoners and the #DignityStrike at the heart of Times Square.”
“Dignity Strike” refers to a hunger strike initiated by Marwan Barghouti on April 16, 2017. More than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners participated in the strike – most them also convicted for acts of terrorism. Barghouti headed the Palestinian Authority (PA) terrorist Tanzim force and founded the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. He was sentenced to five consecutive life terms by an Israeli civilian court for some of his crimes, including his role in the Sbarro Cafe bombing.
On April 27, 2017, Azcona tweeted about Khalida Jarrar: “A thousand Palestinian prisoners are on a hunger strike. This woman is fighting for their rights.washingtonpost.com/news/worldview…”
Khalida Jarrar is a senior member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror organization. She has reportedly been the head of the PFLP in the West Bank since 2016. In 2015, an Israeli military court sentenced Jarrar to 15 months in prison for calling to kidnap Israeli soldiers. Israel arrested Jarrar again in 2017 “on suspicion of involvement with terrorist activities and violent public disturbances.” In 2019, she was arrested by Israel with 50 other PFLP operatives following a deadly 2018 bombing attack.
Spreading Hatred of Israel
On July 5, 2019, Azcona tweeted: “Yes we're all a bit problematic unless you're a racist/Zionist/bourgeoisie posOn February 24, 2019, Azcona tweeted: “You know how many Palestinians are born in Venezuela BECAUSE Israel is ethnically cleansing and taking their land??”
On July 7, 2018, Azcona tweeted: “DID YALL PEEP THAT HIDEOUS ISRAHELL FLAG WHEN RUSSIA SCORED. I HOPE THE LOSE.”
On May 26, 2018, Azcona tweeted: “SHUT UP. FIDEL AND CUBA HAVE ALWAYS SUPPORTED PALESTINE. INSHALLAH FIDEL’S GHOST SCARES THE LIVING CRAP OUT OF YALL ON SET AND IT DOESNT HAPPEN. YOU ZIONIST
Azcona’s tweet was in response to Israeli actress Gal Gadot, who tweeted that she would be co-producing a film about Fidel Castro.
On December 6, 2017, Azcona tweeted: “Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine. From the river to the sea Palestine will be free for all Palestinian Muslims, Christians, and Jews.
The hashtag “#HandsOffJerusalem” was created to protest the U.S. government’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and to relocate the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
On June 2, 2017, Azcona tweeted: “I'm just grateful that I've got a few more minutes to be extra petty. ITS FOREVER PALESTINE WTH IS AN ISRAEAL ANYWAYS. People irk me.”
On April 27, 2016, Azcona retweeted a tweet by NYC SJP that said: “From the river to the sea Palestine will be free.
Al Awdah’s co-founder, Abbas Hamideh, has confirmed [00:02:52] that the chant is a call to eliminate Israel.
On November 19, 2014, Azcona particpated in a 2014 Palestinian Right to Education U.S Tour that was held at Hunter College in New York.
The Right to Education Tour brings Birzeit University students to U.S. campuses, where they claim that Israel is obstructing the rights of Palestinians to higher education. This claim mischaracterizes the sweeps Israeli security forces have made to shut down terror cells operating on the Birzeit campus, including cells linked to Hamas.
On July 13, 2014, during Operation Protective Edge (OPE), Azcona tweeted: “This is a human rights issue. Israel has instituted apartheid, and it’s genocide in the making #FreePalestine #FreeGaza.”
Israel commenced Operation Protective Edge (OPE) in July 2014, to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.
SJP Activism
On May 12, 2019, Azcona tweeted: “I started organizing with SJP during undergrad, went onto law school & continued to organize in a limited capacity. Today, I did a KYR with CLEAR for the Palestine Lives Conference & my life has come full circle.#PalestineLives2019 #ALLORNOTHING.”The conference was co-hosted by Within Our Lifetime (WOL), formerly known as New York City Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), as well as the anti-Israel groups Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) and Existence Is Resistance.
On May 20, 2018, Azcona posted a photo on Instagram of her holding a sign that said: “NAKBA 70, GREAT RETURN MARCH #RIGHT TO RESIST #RIGHT TO RETURN Jerusalem is Ours.” Azcona held the sign at an NYC SJP event called: “Nakba Day 2018: Great Return March.”
On May 14, 2016, Azcona retweeted an NYC SJP tweet that said: “Join us tomorrow May 15th 1:30pm at City Hall Park in Manhattan to commemorate 68 years of Al Nakba. WE WILL RETURN!”
The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.
The event was co-sponsored by NYC SJP and titled: “Nakba Day March for Resistance and Return.” At the march, NYC SJP members promoted hatred [00:00:04] against Jews who moved from New York to Israel and said: “The Brooklyn Settlers, the New York Settlers are the most violent.”
A photo album posted to Facebook about the event listed chants from the rally, including [00:13:16]: “From The River to The Sea, Palestine will be free” and [00:00:18] “Smash The Settler-Zionist State!” The demonstrators also chanted [00:00:41] “We don't want a two-state [solution]; we want ‘48!” and “There is only one solution; Intifada, revolution.”
Protesters at the rally held signs which read: “Israel = Racism and Genocide,” “RESISTANCE until Return & Liberation,” “Wanted Terrorist Benjamin Netanyahu for Crimes Against Humanity & The Planet” and “RESIST Zionist Imperialism.”
On October 24, 2014, Azcona tweeted: “Off to Boston with my fellow SJPers to the National Students for Justice in Palestine Conference #NSJP #nsjp2014.
Clothing was sold at the 2014 SJP National Conference, including a shirt with the image of airplane hijacker Leila Khaled, a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), with the text “resistance is not terrorism.”
On October 8, 2014, Azcona promoted and participated in a John Jay SJP organized “die-in” on campus, where students lay on the ground covered in sheets stained with red paint to resemble blood.
Activists at the “die-in” held signs that said: “Your Tax Dollar$ Kill ONE CHILD in GAZA every HOUR #GazaUnderAttack #FreePalestine” and [00:01:40] “From FERGUSON to PALESTINE, INTIFADA INTIFADA.”
An SJP activistat the “die-in” reportedly declared: “What the Israeli flag stands for is genocide.” Activists also reportedly chanted: “when people are occupied, resistance is justified,” as well as “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will Be Free.”
John Jay University President Jeremy Travis issued an announcement shortly after the “die-in,” stating that he was “deeply troubled…by recent reports that Jewish students at John Jay College have felt intimidated and harassed on our campus.”
In response, John Jay SJP issued an open letter to President Travis calling his letter: “the latest in a series of small acts of repression John Jay’s SJP has faced recently.”
On July 17, 2014, Azcona led a protest that was reportedly chaired by John Jay SJP called: “Emergency Protest: Stop The War on Children! From Gaza to U.S./Mexico Border.”
At the rally, Azcona posed for a photo with John Jay SJP activists Monica Murillo and Susan Abdelghafar, who held a sign that said: “I CAN’T BELIEVE WE STILL PROTESTING THIS SH*T. #66years.”
Activists at the rally held signs that said: “Nazism Apartheid Zionism,” “Stop Israeli Murders of Gaza’s Children” and “End ALL Aid to the Racist State of Israel!”
Other signs at the rally said: “Palestinians are Freedom Fighters,”“New Yorkers Stand With Gaza Against Israeli Genocide,” “Israel = Ku Klux Klan” and “STOP THE HOLOCAUST ON GAZA!”
On July 8, 2014, Azcona was tagged in a John Jay SJP Facebook post that said: “John Jay SJP's new e-board has some big things coming!” Azcona posed for two photos shared on the Facebook post by John Jay SJP.
On November 13, 2013, Azcona posed with Josh Reubner for a photo after a John Jay SJP event called: “Shattered Hopes: Why Obama Failed to Broker Israeli-Palestinian Peace.”
The event featured Reubner, who is the Policy Director for the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR), formerly the U.S. Campaign to End the Occupation (ETO).
Ruebner is also the co-founder and former Executive Director of Jews for Peace in Palestine and Israel (JPPI), an organization, which merged into the anti-Israel Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP).
BDS Activism
On March 1, 2019, Azcona retweeted a tweet that said: “At this point, it's unethical if you aren't calling for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions of Israel. Tell me another nation in the world that used snipers to murder 142 unarmed, non-violent protestors - including 35 kids! That is a massacre.”On March 22, 2019, Azcona was scheduled to speak on a panel, as a John Jay SJP alumnus, at a Fordham SJP event called: “Fordham SJP Presents: BDS at Universities.”
On August 21, 2018 Azcona tweeted in response to artist Lana Del Rey cancelling her scheduled performance in Israel after pressure from BDS activists: “Lawd. I mean she cancelled. In the meantime she needs to educate herself and leave this kumbaya bs when it’s about ethnic cleansing + imbalanced power.”
On October 8, 2014, Azcona was featured in a photo posted to Facebook by John Jay SJP that promoted BDS against Israel. Azcona held a sign that said: “Boycott Divestment Sanctions.”
On July 19, 2014, Azcona posted on Facebook: “Guys download ‘Buycott’ it's a free app on your phone that tells you which products to boycott based on the causes you support. This is prefect [sic] for BDS!”
On Febraury 3, 2014, Azcona tweeted: “She was one of my fave actresses & now Scarlett Johansson is supporting illegal settlements & apartheid #NoScarJo #BDS #shameful.”
John Jay SJP -Demonizing Israel
Widdi continued [00:00:34]: “the Palestinian right of return is one of the biggest threats to Israeli apartheid, because a non-Jewish majority would threaten the existence of a Jewish supremacist state. Therefore advocating for the Palestinian right of return is central to the struggle to disassemble the apartheid state and replace it with a single state throughout historic Palestine.”
SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
